This basically hits the nail on the head, but for simplicity of access and practice time, I'd recommend bass. Being a bass player, I know it's much easier to quietly play bass than drums.

play drums, so many bands out there and so few drummers. I play guitar but can handle a bass pretty well, drumming is a lot more difficult to switch to.
