I finally got The Long Halloween this week, so I read it followed by Dark Victory.

I thought that they were making the graphic novels work in continuity, from Year One to whatever is the most recent. I knew they ignored Year Two, but now I'm confused about Batgirl Year One.

In Dark Victory Gordon has just been made Commissioner. Barbara is mentioned by him as staying for the holidays, and old enough to baby sit for James Jr. Dick only becomes Robin in the end. (Does that make her older than Dick?)

In Batgirl Year One, which I expected to take place a short while after DV, Barbara has clearly been adopted by Gordon, and Robin is very active. This looks like continuity, but Gordon is still only Captain. She mentions how he is on the short list to Commissioner, and goes into his office which says 'Captain James W. Gordon Major Crimes'

In the Haunted Knight story 'Madness' Barbara has just been adopted by Jim and is still with his wife and son. This, and 'Ghosts' (which I believe could be set during the same Halloween' don't mention Gordon's position so I expect them to be set after Dark Victory and before Batgirl Year One. This would make sense but then he's still Captain in Year One!!

Haunted Knight is not in continuity and as for Batgirl: Year One, that's probally a continuity flub. The same for Robin: Year One.

I haven't read Robin Year One yet...what happens? Does it take off from Dark Victory?

Why not?

It's been a while since I read it, but I can't remember any big contradictions in it (you ncan always find some small ones). I think the stories fit in nicely between TLH and DV.

Each of the three stories take place on a halloween. How could they all fit in between TLH and DV?

The way I see it, 'Madness' and 'Ghosts' can easily take place on the same Halloween. Ghosts is set the night before with the Penguin, and he then has a dream. Madness begins on Halloween night. They have to be set after Dark Victory because Barbara is now living with Gordon.

The first story 'Fears' takes place over Halloween weekend. Gordon is still a captain and married to his wife. It could take place on the Halloween before the 'The Long Halloween'.

It doesn't really say Haunted Knight has to take place between TLH and DV. I'd say they are before and after.

Yea, I was thinking the same thing about Batgirl and Robin Year One. I have not read them though so I did not want to say that they "continuity flubs" as you like to call em.

In the comics Barbara has always been presented as being a few years older then Dick.

I said between but maybe around is a better description.

I was thinking that the first story could be the Halloween in Year One or maybe the one after and then the following Halloweens.
Or, as 'anadinseawater' said, two of them could be placed on the same Halloween.

It's been a while since I read Haunted Knight, TLH and DV so I can't remember details, but I remember when I read HK that I got the understanding that the stories fit in around/between Y1, TLH and DV, especially the parts with Gordon, his son and Barbara.

Placing HK in continuity might cause some small continuity contradictions, but you can find that between almost all of the other in-continuity Batman stories too.
