BvS Batman casting thread for Man Of Steel 2 - Part 6

Pacing, story structure, and dialogue were all the problems with MOS. Other plot elements were very hazy as well.

I half think WB will want to distance themselves from selling Superman/Batman as a "MOS sequel" to the mainstream and that they might just be better touting it as a Superman/Batman movie. Not saying it will be the biggest of 2015 either way, I was just saying if it were a success (and I hope it is - but only if it is good :-/ ), I'm worried WB will attribute that to Batman and think that Superman can't work on the big screen.

**** Goyer.

My fear too that WB may think Superman can't work on his own on the big screen. If they did then there would be a stand-alone MOS. You are probably right - if this film does very well Batman will get the credit.

Looks like there won't be a Superman trilogy but that Cavill will end his Supes run in two team-up films. Assuming JL follows Batman vs Superman.

I dunno if WB will distance the film from MOS. The title will tell us that.

It still makes me wonder that how come Cavill said in numerous interviews, interview after interview, during filming and after filming, that MOS was the best screenplay he ever read.

Consider the source. Some WB execs said it would be the film of the year. These guys are not going to say anything negative about the film before it comes out.

I can forgive Cavill on that, but his inability to rise above the film's flaws worries me. Cavill hasn't worked in almost 2 years. He's read scripts and such but studios and directors aren't rushing to cast him. Not a good sign.

He was also the only one to screen test for that part. Ouch. Apparently Snyder's chosen one from the start as Routh was Singer's.

Hire an actor for their looks and not their ability to portray one of fiction's most iconic characters.

Is that bad?
I mean, they're all actors so they should have the abilities to portray every characters, hm? Whatever their looks?

Anyways, I think it's great to have an actor who looks like very much the character.

As far as I know, all actors who look like very much the characters have been great in their roles :) (Let's suppose all scripts were good, too)

People tend to say "he was born to be [character]"

I would love to see Idris Elba as Bruce Wayne ,
But, I think WB fears they will lose money if they cast a black actor .
I disagree with them .
But I doubt they will take what they percieive to be a great risk.

Oh, I think WB would be more worried about how the audience would react to both Batman and Superman being played by British actors.

I also would love seeing Elba as Batman. Although I have to admit, I am fairly open minded on casting.

Not every actor is on the same level. Not every actor has equal ability to play a certain character. You shouldn't generalise, maluka.

^Of course.
What did you don't get?
I was not saying they were all good.
I've just said the fact an actor could look like the character should be a big bonus for the movie.
Whatever he does not play so well, some people could be interested in watching the movie.
Anyways, if these actors are still actors, that means that they're not so bad. I think.
They must have something to keep on playing.
So we shouldn't worry so much about them playing Bruce Wayne.
Anyway, screen tests can help them to decide.

Right now, Batman is still Christian Bale, an english actor,
Spiderman is portrayed by an english actor too
And so is Superman.

So, somehow, they're already all british.
And I don't think it matters...

God I hope we don't get Blake as Batman please for the love of God.

Hm... JGL as Batman?
No way, he's nightwing now!
It would be weird, I don't think they should cast someone who has been in TDK before.
I mean, it's different, now...

Superman is not white. He is an alien. The fact is that Dean Cain clearly looks to have Asian ancestry. You can not deny that. I have even read some places where people attacked Dean Cain as "looking too Asian to be Superman". Well, this is post-Korean War America, post-occupation of Japan America, where we have lots and lots of people who are part Asian.

Not bad but first and foremost an actor needs to be charismatic in the role. As Reeve was, as Downey and Bale are. Cavill was not so all the looks in the world sort of fall flat.

Frankly, if they get a Strong to play Luthor and say a Brolin to play Bats and Cavill can't up his game, he will be totally overshadowed in the next film. Basically Superman taking a back seat to Luthor and Batman.

Not getting into politics, so to each their own with that, but the president is an occupation, a job, NOT a character. He can be any color. A person playing a character has to at least remotely resemble it, otherwise it ceases to be that character. Bruce Wayne/Batman is iconic and works well the way he is, he does not need fixing. If you're going to race change do it for characters that are struggling and need to be made into something new (or create a new character). That should be the criteria.

Did you also have a problem with partly-Asian Lana Lang in Smallville? Are you mad that they made Perry White black in MOS? Perry White has clearly had his race changed. He has had nearly as many appearances in live television and film as Batman, so this is a major change to a major character. If they can do it to Perry, they can do it to Batman.

I could have sworn this was the Batman Casting Thread, and not the I Want to B*tch More About How Much MOS Sucked Thread.

If WB is smart, they'll ignore each and every whiny fanboy, and continue forward in their filmverse. MOS worked for the majority of people. If WB is smart, they'll cast someone attractive as Batman, and give the fans enough material to make teenage fangirls come watch the film and write loads of bad porn about it.

Let's face it; Avengers wouldn't have made half the money it did if it hadn't attracted a large fanbase of females who were less interested in the source material, and more interested in how they could get Stark/Coulson (or whatever his name is/was) together.

Anyway, I had an awesome thought on who should play Batman. I don't think anyone has mentioned their name yet. Unfortunately, I forgot the name already, so I can't share it yet. But I can assure you, they might have been a good choice.

And did I read somewhere that Orlando Bloom is being considered? I don't know if he could get the voice right, although his American accent is amazing. He and Cavill would probably play very well off each other too.

What about Bruce Wayne dictates that he must be white?

I think it's the fact that the Wayne family is one of the oldest in Gotham and are WASP aristocrats.

However the Wayne family has never really been touched upon.

I'm not a fan of changing an already established character's race only for diversity's sake.

I am a fan of not being afraid to screentest and cast actors that are of different skin colors/ races, and choosing them over other actors on the basis of having the best acting skills for that role.

I do want to see some more mainstream movies with lead characters that aren't white though.

This is why I like the casting of Dean Cain in L&C so much. They are not in your face about the fact they have cast someone who is not fully white, and whose very existence is in defiance of 1946 California law.

Your logic makes no sense. White Americans largely descend from Europe, and Bale is a white European. What do they teach in schools nowadays?

Well, if the goal is to cast an actor who has the same background as the character, than white Americans should be cast to fill the roles of white Americans. Plus, White Americans have more Native American ancestry than most are willing to admit.

So, if we can cast an actor who grew up in a different country, then why not one who differs in some other way. Anyway, for years Hollywood was casting Syrians as Native Americans, so the claims that actors have to be the same race as their characters are just false.

What about Bruce Wayne dictates that he must be white?

The fact that his family has been there for Gotham and has contributed to its foundation since the city's first inception back in the 1700's. As Llama_Shepherd said, they are WASP aristocrats.

Also, Perry White and Lana Lang are minor side characters in comparison to Batman.

I liked Cavill as superman and the DC Universe set up. I just don't like MOS.

Was it that guy with the face and the hair? I loved him in that one movie or show that he was in.

I don't think you can judge when you make a comparison between the serie and the movie.
Tom Welling was C.Kent during years, while we only watch Cavill during two hours in MOS. And I thought it was exciting when he learned to fly.
You couldn't expect to care too much about the relationships in this movie because there is not enough time to know all the characters...

Also, at some level we are not meant to be as invested in the Clark/Lois relationship here. In Smallville they had 6 season, and we end with them about to get married (that was something I did not understand about the finale, why they waited so long to get married. I thought L&C was bad when Lois and Clark did not get married immediately when Lois's memory came back) while at the end of MOS Lois and Clark have not started to date even. Their relationship is not as developed yet.

Still, I prefer the MOS relationship. Less drama, and less deception. And Smallville is low on the "Clark deceives Lois" scale.

Yeah I want to get back to talking about the Batman casting. If I wanted to listen to the haters whine, I'd go into a review thread. I purposefully avoid those threads for a reason.

It's a shame they used JGL in the last Bat-film because he would have been at the top of my list for Bruce Wayne/Batman.

However the Wayne family has never really been touched upon.

Even if they go that route, they can explain an actor who does not look "WASP", by explaining his mother was from somewhere else.
