Every time Batman killed a major villain in the movies, they always died from falling. Pretty interesting video that talks about it. Why do you think they always did that? Was it so that Batman wouldn't look like a cold-hearted killer?

Technically the Penguin died from the toxic sewage water he ingested. He was spewing it all back up when he emerged from the water. It wasn't the actual fall that killed him.

I reckon it was a combination of the fall and the toxic waste..

(IE: poetic justice, just like how Penguin killed the Ice Princess)

The toxic waste area was elsewhere, the Penguin didn't fall into it. He fell into the same regular water pool that Schrek did and the penguins swim through. It was actually the impact of the fall into the shallow pool that did it.

The film seems to imply the toxic waste area is back where the wooden plank walkway goes.

Yeah, that always confused me to be honest. Shrek's cage is over the same pool Penguin fell into, but Penguin seems to indicate that's where the toxic waste is:

I'll have to watch it again.

Also, I don't think he was spewing toxic waste. He had black/green stuff coming out of his mouth throughout the movie.

Then explain all the green liquid he was regurgitating when he surfaced from the water.

The geography of the toxic waste in the water is clearly a goof. Penguin points into the pool of water beneath Schreck's cage that's where he and the kids will be going. He's been submerged in the water for several minutes and when he resurfaces he's making these gurgling sounds and choking up dark green liquid, and just before he drops dead he makes a horrible choking sound while clutching at his throat.

It was poetic justice. He died from the same toxic waste he was planning to murder the children in.

I think his death more so had to do with the impact of the fall. I think the reason he' spewing the toxic sludge is because he ingested it, but it wasn't the cause of his death. Kind of like, had he fallen in regular water, he would have still died.

Catwoman survived a fall into a truck of kitty litter, and into a glass greenhouse without so much as a sprained ankle to show for it. I don't buy a fall into a deep pool of water killed him. It was clearly the toxic sewage he was constantly choking up during the entire scene.

Most of the villains were created by falling into something, too.

Jack Napier fell into a vat of green stuff.
Oswald Cobblepot fell into the sewers.
Selina Kyle fell into a vat of cats.
Victor Fries fell into a vat of freeze stuff.
Pamela Isley fell into a vat of plants and chemicals.

Only Two-Face, Riddler and Bane had a different kind of origin.

The green liquid is natural to Penguin, as he is spitting out the stuff the whole movie. He is some kind of deformed freak.

He wasn't planning to murder the children with toxic waste. He was planning to drown them, in a pool that was contaminated with Shrek's "industrial by-products".

Quote from movie - "You get to watch them sink in a deep puddle of your industrial by-products. Then you join them."

Obviously, the toxic waste didn't affect the penguins, who were always swimming around in it.

It was most likely the fall that killed the Penguin.

Selina Kyle fell into a vat of cats.

A "vat of cats"?

Pamela Isley fell into a vat of plants and chemicals.

Ehhh.. she was more like swallowed into the ground, after being crushed by by all the poisons and chemicals that fell on her when Woodrue pushed her into it.

remember too, Shrek DID fall into the water that was below him. when he was attempting to get away from the cage,Catwoman lassos his leg with her whip and pulls him into the water, where he floats for a bit and even goes underwater to retrieve a gun from that dead clown. and he definitely ingested some stuff as his falling was a surprise to him and he's gasping for air. but when he gets pulled out he's not coughing up any toxic stuff. in fact,he's basically fine.

I always assumed Penguin died from the fall, and the stuff he was coughing up was blood. gotta remember, this was the heyday of the MPAA, who were against all types of blood and gore (but not sex or nudity). so I just assumed they changed the color to that green/black to make it easier to get past the censors, and in an added bonus it made it look MORE horrific! I guarantee you if they had Penguin walking around the last couple minutes belching up a massive amount of red blood all over the place, the film would've gotten an R rating. Evil Dead 2 and Sam Raimi tried something similar, changing the blood in their film from red to black and green to try and avoid an X-rating.

That was his saliva. It was black, and it only came down his chin in little dribbles on occasion;

In his death scene he's got a river of this green gunk running out of his mouth and all over his shirt;

It's all the toxic waste he ingested being submerged in the water.

"A batch of toxic waste from your clean textile plant. There's a whole lagoon of this crud in the back".

Oh and look it's green. Fancy that.

Which doesn't make any sense. Toxic waste should have killed them just like it will kill any animal.

I think their falling is symbolic about about how their great ambition was unrealized with success.

In the two disc special DVD release, the behind the scenes footage shows Danny DeVito and his make-up artist Ve Neill in the make-up trailer. In the footage, they discuss how the black stuff that he spits throughout the movie is bile that's a result of a condition that the Penguin has. So it's not a huge leap to say that the impact of the fall (he fell on his back, if I remember correctly) would have made him spew up a ton of bile if he's already drooling it from the first time we see him. The fact that he's just emerged from a tank of water would add to the volume and spread of the bile as we see in his final moments.

here's the video about his make up, skip to around 5:05 to see what I'm talking about :)

Green blood lol? Even though you can see red blood on his face and head in the very same scene; http://oi62.tinypic.com/23jh8qp.jpg

Returns was not shy about showing blood, like when Penguin took a bite out of that image consultant's nose, or when Catwoman clawed the face of the mugger.

He fell sideways into the water, not on his back:

He is not drooling it the first time we see him:

Nor is he drooling any black saliva at all for the majority of his scenes:

He's spewing up green gunk, not the black bile he usually dribbles a bit on his chin in a small handful of scenes. So why would being submerged in water cause him to be consistently drooling up a river of green liquid? If it was his bile and was naturally green then his teeth and lips would have had a green tinge all throughout the movie, not a black one.

Not to mention listen to him during the whole scene. He sounds like he's slowly choking. It's also implied that the heat is getting to him since the fan that was cooling his lair was destroyed. "The heat's getting to me....UGH!"

Being submerged in regular water wouldn't have done that to Penguin. He had been underwater before when he escaped from the angry mob at his speech. He jumped off the bridge and disappeared into the same river his parents dumped him in.

His death was a combination of the toxic waste in his water, and the giant fan no longer working. His last line says that when he says he needs a cool drink of ice water. That would rinse the toxic waste out of his mouth and throat, and it would also cool him down. It wasn't the fall that killed him. It was what he fell into, and his busted air conditioning. He's a bit of a Mr. Freeze rip off. He obviously needs it cold. I remember he had air conditioning in that Campaign HQ base, too. And this movie was set at Winter, when it was snowing. Catwoman made a remark about it being chilly in there.

Falling is a visually non-violent PG way to die. same things happens in all the old disney cartoons.

Yep. He died as a throwaway afterthought to set up a Catwoman one-liner.
