Ah, sorry for the late response... as Jekecy already posted, in animated series he cut it to save his son and himself, but in the comics he lost his ability to communicate with sea life (it was stolen from him actually) and it was bitten off by piranhas.

I believe he actually lost all of his powers, not just the one to communicate with sea life, but am not sure.

Or it was an oversight by the writer.
