I was never really about one or the other, I genuinely loved them both.
At one point the way I might have broke it down:
Trek ruled TV it was all about the syndicated original series , and then Next Gen (never got that into any of the Trek Movies (Motion picture seeing the Enterprise on the big Scree was a jaw dropping moment, yet it was a drawn out TV episode, Wrath of Khan was Ok, the rest of the Trek Movies were mostly garbage) and the reboot Movies felt like caricatures . Trek was all about the TV episodes, although they progressively fell apart.
Star Wars ruled Movies, Sci-Fi Fantasy at it's biggest the original Trilogy was untouchable, fueled my childhood imagination, i was the right age for it, and that experience won't be topped.. Never followed any Star Wars on TV the cartoons I skipped the TV "specials" all looked like garbage, then the prequels killed Star Wars for me. Awakens and R1 gave me hope, but Last Jedi killed it all over again. maybe the new SW live action TV series will revive it for me.
And Dune ruled the Novels, Frank Herbert's universe was mass consumption for me, this was sci-fi and fantasy at it's best. Some Trek novels were ok, and most Star Wars novels were trash, (exception Zahn's Heir to the Empire was ok) Dune Lynch movie was visually striking yet the story fell short, I almost preferred Jodorowsky' describing his insane vision, although it would have been so much it's own monster, mostly betraying the novels. Dune TV Syfy channel series was actually pretty good. The Novels is were where Dune lived and breathed, the others couldn't compare here.
As the lines blur, I will always give these franchises and universes a chance, wherever they show up, In the end I love them all.
Honorable mention Galactica which was low brow easy TV consumption which I loved as a kid, then managed to reinvent itself so well, I could love it all over again as an adult.
