Round 4 is a go!

This time I picked three bands who are considered the forefathers of the punk genre and are influential on all rock bands since. We're doing a three-way dance this time, so let's see how it goes:

Sex Pistols

The Clash

The Ramones

The Clash, hands down no question. Much more versatile than the other two, and I just enjoy them a whole lot more.

I went with the Ramones. I just think Blitzkrieg Bop is one of the best songs ever and with I Wanna Be Sedated, I just find them more satisfying than anything the Clash ever did, though I love London Calling. Sex Pistols historically are important, albeit more for shock and outrage in Britain I always thought (God Save the Queen) than for reat music and considering they only ever had one full album...eh. i like Anarchy in the UK though.

So, I say the Ramones for personal preference.

ramones, most definitely. clash are great, but i find the ramones far more enjoyable. sex pistols are good, but they as much a manufactured boy band as the monkees.

The Ramones, The Clash and The Sex Pistols wouldn't be around if it weren't for Joey, Johnny and Dee Dee; but not only that but The Ramones just represent punk rock to me and I just feel they were one of the bands that weren't really appreciated till sometime after their formation. Plus, "Blitzkreig Bop", "Rock N' Roll Radio", "Pet Semetary" are just such classic songs. On the other hand though, I was at one point obsessed with them so I might be a bit biassed.

I do like The Clash but never really got into them like the Ramones, plus I hate The Sex Pistols, they just don't have the same great music as the other two do and it was all their image in the first place.

i wish the stooges were on here. they were better than all these bands combined, and also responsible for the birth of punk. all three of these bands admittedly owed their careers to the work of the stooges.

Voted for the Sex Pistols, they might have only made one album but it's a great one, both the playing and songwriting on it are up there with the best.
As with the Ramones, their songwriting is brilliant too, it's funny how catchy their songs are but they would just fly right by mainsteam audiences who just heard a noise.
I've always thought the Clash were really boring, they're one of these worthy lauded bands I've just never got into at all. They just sound like a usual pub rock band who latched onto what they thought was a fad and did quite well out of it.
Re: The Sex pistols being manufactured. That kind of thing doesn't bother me as long as the records are good, their personalities weren't manufactured and it was those personalities that wrote the songs. The Monkees made great records, they even eventually wrote a couple of good ones too.

Yeah I kinda forgot about Iggy. Iggy is great but I think it crossed my mind as a band that wouldn't get a lot of votes. It was a mistake. But I do think the Ramones ARE better...but that's just my opinion. The Ramones kind of define punk, at least classic punk, to me. But I understand you're point.

BTW who are some of your favorite modern punk bands (for future poll,s possibly?).

Eehh... have to go with The Clash.

I'm leaving this thread open but I think it is about time to move to the next battle, it looks like as of now though that the Ramones narrowly defeated the Clash while the Sex Pistols fired their load early (bad pun). This worked out better.

It's got to be either The Clash or The Sex Pistols but I think Pistols are better (even though they had only one album).

As for The Ramones, I never really liked their music.

The Pistols were never that exciting to me. I have a lot of love for the Ramones, being that they were comprised partially of bored, lanky Jews who just wanted to have fun (so, you know, I can relate), and they put out some great music. Thing is, The Clash are just one of those bands I don't tire of (though lately I've been extending that to B.A.D. and the Mescaleros). They were the most talented, most eclectic, and most ambitious. And when it all comes down to it, they made the best music.

Huh. The Clash have overtaken The Ramones in this thread.

Why the hell do the Pistols have only two votes, their music has more Punk attitude than the other two bands.

Although I really like The Clash, I still think that the Pistols are a better Punk Rock band, IMO.

Definitely The Clash. As others have mentioned, they were far more versatile and ambitious as musicians, branching out from their initial punk trappings and experimenting with Reggae, New Wave and even Rap. Plus, they had Joe Strummer, who alone was a total badass in additiont to being a musical genius.

The Ramones are second. Great music, great sound, and of the three bands, probably closely embodied the traditional punk sound.

I hate The Sex Pistols. As far as I'm concerned, they were one hit wonders whose only member who truly had any edge was their mentally ******ed bassist.

really? you think so? have you heard the story about when the ramones were first in the UK, johnny rotten was too afraid to meet them thinking they'd kick his ass just for the hell of it.

People with a "punk attitude" shouldn't have had to try so hard.
