BBC's Sherlock: Series 3

A.V. Club has written an article arguing that Elementary is better than Sherlock.

Internet explodes in 3....2.....1....

far as I'M concerned, each is good in it's own way and has lots of positive points... but Elementary better than Sherlock?... uhuh, no way.
Internet goes... :exp:

I figured there'd be more reactions here since the American premiere was last night. Did y'all just stream it after it aired in the UK?

I saw it here in the States about an hour after it first transmitted in the UK...

I haven't watched that much of Elementary. But it does look okay, in its own way.
But, better than Sherlock?

Er, yep, never gonna happen. Not in a million years.
Elementary is good, Sherlock is great.

That is all. The Internet need not explode... :woot:

I like both of them but they're not comparable. Outside of Sherlock's character and being modernized they are nothing alike.

I'm in the US and watched the first episode when it aired last night. Have to say I was mildly disappointed.

On TV or, err... Other means? :cwink:

After thinking about The Empty Hearse, I don't think they should have had that whole subplot with Anderson and his little fanclub. It seemed weird and out of place as in the context of that world, there's no reason to believe that Sherlock would still be alive - and even though Anderson was showing Lestrade possible sightings of him worldwide in Many Happy Returns, I'm sure the Empty Hearse group was created before that, and it wasn't actually addressed in the episode.

Would have been much more interesting if literally everybody - except John to an extent - had moved on from Sherlock, so he then has to deal with that when making his comeback.

I also think Sebastian Moran should have been like his novel counterpart rather than re-modeled as an MP. The first two episodes of Series 3 were really messy, and this series is by far the weakest. His Last Vow was excellent, but that ending ruined it.

Both Sherlock and Elementary wasted the Sebastian Moran character.

The Sun say they could be filming as early as April 2014, as the BBC wants an episode to air on Christmas Day.

I've heard that too and I wouldn't be disappointed with a single Christmas episode. Another round of three would of course be better but I'd rather have the one episode than a rushed order of three subpar ones.

Christmas Day? Nice. Then again The Sun isn't exactly reliable.

I was thinking about the timeline of Series 3 the other day, and it's actually quite jumpy. The Empty Hearse takes place two years after The Reichenbach Fall which was presumably set in 2012. However the former also takes place on November 5th, Guy Fawkes night. So November 2014. Then doesn't Mary say that her's and John's wedding is being planned for May, which would make it May 2015?

Cut to His Last Vow, with the last half hour/45 minutes set on Christmas Day with John not having spoken to Mary for a few months. The last ten minutes is presumably set a couple of weeks later, making it sometime in January 2016.

That's an extremely crazy timeline. And January 2016 marks a likely airdate for Series 4...

Well didn't know Benedict was in 12 years a slave till I saw a clip. Which led me to this

What was it? Four blockbuster movies in 2013? Wow

I think AV Club made some good points about lots of flash and twist with very little substance in Sherlock. At least in the third season.

Oh for God's sake there is no sense in another two year wait. It's three episodes! Get em filmed and done and have it out in a year at the latest. Christ, BBC, people wanna see more Sherlock before something in this world kills em. Teenage layabouts don't even procrastinate like that infernal network does.

Now then, about this season. Most enjoyable so far imo. Episode one was weak, but 2 &3 were ace surpassed only by A Scandal in Belgravia.

I think the two-year gap between S1 and S2 and S2 and S3 was really due to The Hobbit. Now that that's all done with (finally), Martin and Benedict will have clearer schedules. Hopefully that Christmas Day rumour has some legitimacy to it

Well I'm watching in the US, and so far I'm just not enjoying this series as much as the previous two. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's very entertaining, but for the first time, I don't feel that same urgency to watch the episodes that I did before. Last night's was the first one ever that I haven't watched live. Hopefully the 3rd one brings it back.

I think the second episode of this season was the best of the show, just so damn good.

So, I'm watching the episodes here in the U.S. as they air (didn't stream them online). Gotta say, 'The Empty Hearse' delivered for me. I thought it was an interesting how they weaved internet theories into the the story, and even managed to weave the "never satisfied" aspect of how no explanation will satisfy some.

"The Sign of Three" kinda threw me for a loop, because nearly halfway through it I don't think I liked it. Not until it all came around, that is, and was worked out with everything making sense. And I felt this way with "Empty Hearse", but I think this one was a confirmation for me. I really like Mary. And the way she clearly understands, accepts, and knows how to interact with Sherlock...it makes a ton of sense how he likes her too. I think it would have been really easy to go with friction between them, but this is far more interesting and works out better.

The ending was pretty sad, too. You could see he was thinking about accepting some human interaction there and...then leaving with such a lonely tone was something that felt, I don't know, powerful I think.
