Benedict Cumberbatch has, according to Variety, signed on to star in Blood Mountain, an upcoming thriller to be directed by Sergei Bodrov (Mongol, Seventh Son) with a script from Jonathan W. Stokes and John Romano.

Blood Mountain follows a private military contractor who survives an enemy attack in hostile territory. Now he's forced to escort his prisoner, the world's most wanted terrorist, to safety against nigh-impossible odds.

Cumberbatch starred last year in Star Trek Into Darkness, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and The Fifth Estate in addition to his television work on the BBC's "Sherlock." There's no word yet on whether he'll be playing Blood Mountain's military contractor or the terrorist.

Sounds like a potentially cool two hander, hopefully Cumberbatch is the terrorist.

I'd rather see Cumby as the flummoxed protaganist this time. Too often he's the guy holding all the cards.

I kind of hope he isn't the terrorist. It's striking too close to his being Khan in Star Trek IMO.

As long as he does't have Super Blood in this, I don't mind if he is the villain...

For the sake of variety, I'd rather Cumberbatch be the good guy this time.

There is that too. He's a villain as Smaug, arguably so depending on your point of view in The Fifth Estate. And of course in Star Trek Into Darkness he's a terrorist.
