Depends which interpretation or background personal history you wish to go with. Classic 'butler' and confidante only version, Gough. Military background and raised with parent's blessing, Caine.
Damn, y'all had to leave Sean Pertwee out , huh? lol
As far as movies go, I'm inclined to go with Caine, seeing as how well done/fleshed out the relationship between Bruce and Alfred is in the Nolan movies. The scene where Bruce tells him to leave always kills me.
"It means your hatred... And it means losing someone that I have cared for, since I first heard his cries... ECHO... through these walls. "
Has to be Michael Caine. Gough gave a nice performance for what it was, but just felt too soft, old and genteel. Caine just felt more believable as a former military guy who had the temperament and skill set to do everything Batman required of him
Michael Caine all the way. Great chemistry with Bale, lots of memorable scenes ranging from emotional, to tough love approach, to downright hilarious. Their banter was always gold.
Michael Caine. Everything about Michael Caines performance was beautiful in every way possible, and those speeches he gave to bruce are some of my fave scenes in comic book films. My fave being his speech to Bruce about how even he doesn't understand the Joker and that some men just want to watch the world burn.
