Best concept albums of all time

How could you leave off Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band by The Beatles (or The White Album for that matter)? Or Joe's Garage by Zappa? Or Operation Mindcrime by Queensryche? Or A Love Supreme by John Coltrane? Or Motor Booty Affair by Parliament Funkadelic? Or The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust by Bowie (Or Diamond Dogs, for that matter)? Or Tales From Topographic Oceans by Yes? Or 2112 by Rush? Or Aqualung by Jethro Tull (Or even Thick As A Brick)? Or What's Goin' On by Marvin Gaye? Or Kilroy Was Here by Styx? Or Purple Rain by Prince? I guess the point I'm trying to make is that there are so many amazing concept albums that have been done that it's impossible to make a list that does the subject justice. :)

Why I voted "other" :70'sProgDork:

EDIT: heh, thing is, Jon Anderson's lyrics are so fruity/artsy, you'd never know it's a concept album unless you'd read about it.:o
Also, I always mix that one up with Close To The Edge. Close To The Edge is the one I dig.

Concept: to kick as much ass as possible on a single record.

Tom Waits' concept album trilogy of Swordfishtrombones, Frank's Wild Years, and Rain Dogs. It's brilliant.

Dream Theater's ''Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From A Memory'' and all albums by Pain Of Salvation.

Those choices blow, man. Get yourself to a record store, pronto.

I wouldn't say the choices blow (Who, Cooper, Queen, Floyd). It's just another one of those criminally negligent polls.

There are no less than three options that have no business being included in a "best concept albums of all time" list.

How could you leave off Smashing Pumpkins Mellon Collie and Infinite Sadness?

Anyway as for the greatest of all time theres no doubt...

Pink Floyd's THE WALL!

Can someone explain the concept of Concept Album to me? FOr I've heard many of the albums in this thread, favorite being Love Supreme by John Coltrane...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concept_album

In popular music, a concept album is an album which is "unified by a theme, which can be instrumental, compositional, narrative, or lyrical" (Shuker 2002, p.5). Most often they are pre-planned (conceived) and with all songs contributing to a single overall theme or unified story, this plan or story being the concept. This is in contrast to the standard practice of an artist or group releasing an album consisting of a number of unconnected songs that the members of the group or the artist have written, or have been chosen to perform or cover. Given that the suggestion of something as vague as an overall mood often tags a work as being a concept album, a precise definition of the term proves problematic.

I was wondering when you'd let on to the fact that 95% of your posts are Wikipedia copy and paste jobs....

That's probably the first Wikipedia quote I've posted in months. Jackass.

Really? Change a couple of words here and there, and I'd beg to differ. I'm just busting your chops, anyway. Most of your posts, copied from Wikipedia or not, read like they are. No one's an expert on everything, so if not Wikipedia, you're copying them from elsewhere.

Oh, well pardon me for being well read and able to express myself with words. And who's ever claimed to be an expert on everything? Certainly not me. Jackass.
