Best MCU villain this year? (2017)

Best villain?

  • Ego

  • Vulture

  • Hela

All three actors gave good performances. Vulture was an interesting character, but he wasn't all that threatening. Hela was a big time threat, but was lacking in depth of character. Ego had both, so he was the winner in my book.

Thing overall have gotten much better with regards to Marvel villains. The so-called "villain problem" is a thing of the past after this year.

This is the year they finally solved that issue.

I love Michael Keaton and Kurt Russell, but my vote has to go to Cate Blachette's Hela; she was simply magnificent in this role, and she made Hela both menacing and frightening, and yet you secretly root for her to win because she is so awesome.

For sure. Throw in Dormammu and Zemo and I'd argue the villain problem is over.

For pure villainy... hands down it's HELA!

Vulture doesn't even come close in terms of raw power levels! Ego can match her but i just don't find Ego that entertaining! And i have to agree with the others... about secretly rooting her to win! I for one wanted her to kill Surtur at the end! I really hope she gets to be in Infinity War and team up with Thanos. Imagine the carnage these two will make!

Best year for Marvel villains yet !

I thought Ego was great, mostly because he's convincing as a benevolent character until the big reveal - he's not evil per se, but a megalomaniac.

Vulture was good too, had very understandable motives and a solid performance from Keaton.

But Hela............welll she takes the prize easily, she's slinky and beyond badass while also being witty and utterly ruthless. In terms of threat level, she's a different kind of threat from Ego
in that they needed to let Surtur power up and destroy Asgard to defeat her
. I mean, Ego was pretty much going to wipe out the galaxy, but killing him was within the characters' capabilities (they actually could and did do it)

Hela isn't as much of an immediate threat, but
she was
beyond eve powered-up Thor's ability to defeat given time she would have probably conquered the galaxy - bar Thanos, and we don't know what he can do yet (without any infinity stones)
.

All in all Hela wins this one for me.

BTW you forgot Taserface............kidding !

Michael Keaton's Vulture wins for me.

A regular fella losing his job and will do anything to get by, plus he had a laugh or two along the way.

The fights with Spider-Man might be lacking but his on screen presence makes up for any of that.

Vulture is still the best. Hela was gorgeous to look at pretty badass, but she was super one-note and ultimately isn't very interesting.

I know there is no way to prove it, but after seeing Vulture in Homecoming I'm pretty convinced SM3 would have been better if Sony/Arad allowed Raimi to use him instead of forcing him to use Venom.

Raimi would've made a better movie for sure. I don't know if it would've been good movie(probably not)but definitely better than Homecoming.

Vulture was great. Can't wait for more Keaton. If the Grandmaster is a villian, Goldblum wins! One of the performances of the year.

Didn't include Grandmaster in the poll. Really just focused on the main 3 villains here

I thought the voting would be closer, but clearly it looks like people are puling for Hela. For me it was pretty lopsided and that's with total respect for what Russell and Keaton did because they were terrific.

I'm very hopeful that this trend continues for Marvel with Killmonger and Klaw in BP and with Thanos.

I'm very excited for the future of Spidey villains in the MCU.

It seems like they've finally become comfortable with Spider-Man as a hero in his own right (see Nolan's Batman) and they can finally start focusing more on the villains. Somewhat less possible for the heroes more obscure to the public (Thor, and Ant-Man, etc.)

Good villains overall this year. Hela, Vulture, Ego, The Grandmaster... I still think that Marvel has been lining their cards perfectly to make Thanos their best villain yet. Hela was good but if they wanted then she could have been easily the best MCU villain, there was plenty of margin for improvement...

I think Marvel really wants Thanos to carry that badge of best MCU villain ever.

Fingers crossed. Spider-Man's rouge's deserve it. Wondering how they'll tackle the sequel in regards to the villains

I don't agree at all that Hela is 'one note', she needed a little more development and screen time but to say that she's one note is a disservice to Cate Blanchett's wonderful and charismatic performance. The fact that she's winning this poll by a fairly comfortable margin is testament to that.

I too thought it would be closer, Vulture caught up with her yesterday but then she got a flurry of votes and pulled ahead again. :woot:

Hela was good but if they wanted then she could have been easily the best MCU villain

If Marvel Studios do the smart thing and bring her back then she still easily can. One of the reasons that Loki is such a popular villain is because he was allowed to develop over three (now four) movies rather than being a one and done character, let's hope that Marvel learned something from that.

I'm absolutely stunned by your comments. :o

I thought all were very, very good, but I thought Hela was clearly the best. They were all very different so, hey, that's a good thing in my book. Loki is my fav villain so far, but I think the talented and beautiful Cate Blanchett will be back in a future MCU movie and have a chance to move forward with the character.

Dear Artanis,

Are we on speaking terms again?

EDIT: I'm not surprised she "caught up". The frelling movie was only released in the US a couple of days ago.:oldrazz:

Vulture > Ego > Hela

I thought they were all pretty good villains, but I have to go with Vulture just because his motivations seemed more interesting and his character was more nuanced than the other two. I enjoyed seeing a smaller scale bad-guy who basically just wanted to steal stuff for profit. The father aspect of Ego was interesting, but eventually he just became another "destroy the universe" villain. Hela was well-acted and characterized, but she didn't have a whole lot of depth.

Good question. Hela was the most terrifying. Ego was the most entertaining. Vulture was the most complicated. We had some great villains this year, and this isn't easy. I could make a case for either of them. I'm going to go with Ego in the end though, as I just had a blast watching Kurt Russell in the role.
