i don't like their list...

...Star Wars had the best effects of the 70's, not of all time. imo, best effects of all time so far is either Terminator 2 or PotC: Dead Man's Chest.

I thought it was a crappy list, but then I saw it's "Most Influential."

If you're doing a best list, Lord of the Rings would have to be up there, and Peter Jackson's King Kong, DMC like Dorky said, etc etc etc.

Independence Day is noteworthy, it has the most minature work of any movie ever and it holds up with the best CGI today.

but (big surprise here) I gotta go with Dead Man's Chest, and even more so of note Davy Jones in general, imo the realist looking cgi by a l0ngsh0t (wow...), but seriously that is the one piece of cgi that literally looks like a living breathing creature instead of part video game

Yeah, I agree Gollum is the best CGI character. Totally bought into the effect from the first frame.

IMO there can never be a BEST OF ALL time list since there will always be movies that are truly groundbreaking and/or influential

I think it's because of the VFX that were used with the ILM ( making them speak etc).
It's influential to movies like Cats & Dogs and most recently Charlotte's Web
