So, taking only in account the story, the plot, the dialogue which is the best CBM ever? The best well written story of them all?

Winter Soldier. Had the tightest script, no fat what so ever.

Not at all. They're take on the media manipulating the American public with ease, was downright brilliant. Definitely one of the better written CBMs. Also gave Downey much more range to chew on, and I thought it was his best performance until Civil War. Downey didn't really have a script on the first two, IM3 was a much tighter movie than the first two, with something to say. Great script.

I don't know, maybe Batman Begins.

TDK, by far. One of the rare instances where the story and plot of a CBM are truly Intriguing and immersive and don't give me that horrible deja vu feeling.

It's great structurally. But too much "I am gonna explain the theme of the movie to you" dialogue for me to elevate it higher. It's a testament to Ledger that he makes it sound diabolical.

Nolan loves to explain what he's doing in his movies. It's infuriating mostly because it always comes off as pretentious - more along lines of "Isn't my movie so deep", more than 'spoon feeding' audiences.

BTW, Civil War deserves a mention. The way it was able to juggle so many characters was pure wizardry.

Standouts:
Spider-Man 2
The Dark Knight
Iron Man
The Avengers
Iron Man 3
The Winter Soldier
Guardians of the Galaxy
Deadpool
Civil War
Logan
Spider-Man Homecoming

What's the difference between story and plot? What's the difference between this and best movie ever. They go hand and hand.

Avengers was like wizardry at the time. That's a contender. X2 was solid as well.

They go hand in hand but there's still a difference. WW is considered a very good movie even with barebones story and dialogue. On the other hand Ant-Man and Dr. Strange were clever and well-written but lacked the oomph of the top tier CBMs.

Batman Begins
TDK
Spider-Man 2
Iron Man
Guardians of the Galaxy
GOTG 2
Wonder Woman
Captain America: TWS
Superman
X-Men: First Class
X2

Story is the blueprint. Plot is the details.
The best cbm ever hinges more on how you think every element worked out.
The best written cbm ever obviously focuses on the script.

Agreed.

On some level, pretty much all cbms are a bit preposterous - however, TDK does such a good job with its twisted little tale that it rises far above the rest.

Of course, TDK is helped by some amazing performances - but its story is sophisticated enough to carry the film along. It's not perfect, but it's certainly more than a cut above most cbms.

Probably the centrepiece of the whole film is the Batman/Joker interrogation scene, where at first Batman is in control, but ultimately it ends up with the Joker in control - and actually having been in control all along. Again, the performances in that scene are outstanding, but the scene itself is a great concept and well written (Goyer must not have been involved ).

Story isn't everything though.

GOTG, one of my favorite cbms pretty much has no story other than "get the orb" but it's great fun.

Mad Max Fury Road can be summed up as "Max helps a bunch of supermodels escape across the desert and back while being chased by the cast of cirque du soleil from hell." But it's a super exciting ride !

To be honest, I don't even really know what the story of the first Avengers is
other than "fight each other, fight Loki and fight the chitauri"- Age of Utlron actually has a much stronger narrative.

So you don't really need an intricate story to make an enjoyable film - but you do have to tell the story you have in an engaging way.nd

Having said all that Civil War and Winter Soldier deserve mad props for being the best recent cbms in terms of story - in both films the characters actually have an arc that's recognizable and engaging, and I feel like many cbms (other than origin films) jettison character arcs for action.

I agree GOTG has a very basic story, but I'd argue it has a fantastic screenplay. All main characters are beautifully realized, each one with their own particular brand of humor and traumas, the theme is evident and there's an underlying sadness that pops up on second vewings. It's no coincidence it actually was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay at the Writer's Guild awards. And I'd also argue Vol. 2 screenplay's is just as good, maybe better.

If we are talking about story exclusively, I'd probably vote for Spider-Man 2 (though Logan, Iron Man, Iron Man 3, TDK, Civil War, Winter Solder and First Class are all great options), but I feel both GOTG's are so strong in the overall screenplay department that I'm holding it for the time being. For all the poop jokes that make people doubt him, James Gunn really knows how to give some depth to his characters.

I'd have to mention that Homecoming's screenplay is very, very, sharp, but I'd like to have more time to properly judge it.
