Who did you think it would be.. edward cullen?:whatever:

For me, that's either 1971 or 1975.

1971:
The French Connection
Dirty Harry
Get Carter
A Clockwork Orange
Straw Dogs
Duck, you Sucker

1975:
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
The Man Who Would be King
Dog Day Afternoon
Jaws
The French Connection II

2007 is the greatest year of the decade. 2001 was very good too. 1994 and 1999 and like every year of the 70's were great too.

A lot of scholars will argue for 1939. Significant movies of that year are Gone With the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Stagecoach, Rules of the Game, Ninotchka, Wuthering Heights, The Women, Gunga Din, Young Mr. Lincoln, Of Mice and Men, Dark Victory, The Roaring Twenties, Destry Rides Again, and Goodbye, Mr. Chips. That's a tough list to argue with.

1975, mentioned earlier, is also ridiculously strong. In addition to the above mentioned films, you have Nashville, Barry Lyndon, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Three Days of the Condor, and Picnic at Hanging Rock, and several smaller but significant movies.

I'm fond of 1976, although it's not quite deep enough. But, at the top, you have Taxi Driver, All the President's Men, Network, The Outlaw Josie Wales, Carrie, Rocky, and Bound for Glory.

If we're talking about the last 20 years or so, 1999 gets my vote. The Matrix, The Iron Giant, The Insider, Fight Club, Being John Malkovich, Toy Story 2, Office Space, Election, Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai, All About My Mother, The Limey, South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut, The Straight Story, The Sixth Sense, Three Kings, and flawed but high profile films like American Beauty, The Green Mile, Notting Hill, Eyes Wide Shut, and The Blair Witch Project.

1994

Pulp Fiction
Speed
True Lies
Forest Gump

SM3? AWE (don't get me wrong this one was good, but the majority of people didn't like it)? Shrek 3?

2008 for now but 2010 (Iron Man 2, Thor, Prince of Persia, Harry Potter 7 part 1) and 2011 will top that, especially 2011 (Batman 3, SM4, Captain America, Possible Dragonball sequel, Avengers and the last Harry Potter movie)

It had MOTHA ****IN TRAAAAANSFORMAS! Yeeeeaah!

But still...2008 kicked ass.

We're talking more than Summer blockbusters here. You know, films like No Country for Old Men, Once, There Will be Blood, count for the year.

There's more to a great year than a big blockbuster in the Summer.

For me personally, i have to say 1984. I certainly love a lot more movies from the 30's and 40's, but in 1984 i was nineteen, carefree, and actually got to expierience a bunch of cool movies up on the big screen, often on opening night with a packed audience:

Beverly Hills Cop
Ghostbusters
Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom
Gremlins
Karate Kid (**** off, the first one rocked)
Romancing The Stone
Star Trek 3

Good times.

What was flawed about American Beauty and The Green Mile? I thought both of those films were excellent.

If we're limiting it to genre films (horror, science fiction, and fantasy) then 1982 is the year.

Blade Runner
E.T., the Extra-Terrestrial
The Thing
Poltergeist
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
Tron
Conan the Barbarian
Creepshow

Along with Swamp Thing, The Dark Crystal, The Sword and the Sorceror, Cat People, The Beastmaster, and, kinda sorta Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid made it a very interesting year.

That's very true. I've seen Bladerunner, Poltergeist, Wrath of Khan, and E.T. a gazillion times since, but the first time on the big screen with any of those films was pure magic!

Hard to pick any particular year. Every year you get more or less the same; 1% great movies, 1% horrible and 98% that are just mediocre. :)

Since I like trippy movies 1999 was the best for me.

American Beauty
Being John Malkovich
Election
Fight Club
The Matrix
Office Space

There Will Be Blood
No Country for Old Men
Atonement
Michael Clayton
Eastern Promises.

All of these movies were better then 2008s winner -Slumdog Millionare.

the only exception in 2005 was Batman Begins

1981 was the best year ever in movies
