Washington, Feb. 23 : Actor Billi Bob Thornton turned down a part in 'Spiderman' to avoid the unease caused by heavy make-up.

The Oscar winner says that director Sam Raimi had offered him villain The Green Goblin's role in the first 'Spiderman' movie, but he rejected it to avoid the heavy make-up required for the role.

He further said that the very thought of spending days in make-up had begun to pester him.

"He (Raimi) offered me the part of the bad guy, the surfing guy... I told Sam, 'I just can't be in make-up that long. I'd go crazy,'" Contactmusic quoted him as saying.

"Frankly, I was never interested in being the bad guy. For some reason people think that I've played the bad guy a lot, but I really haven't," he added.

After Thornton refused to play the role, Willem Dafoe stepped in to portray Spider-Man's nemesis.

So? The movie was five years ago, and was awesome with Dafoe.

Did I say the 1st movie sucked or anything? I liked the 1st movie. Was just posting the story I came across. :whatever:

I don't recall Dafoe wearing and makeup...

Maybe this was before they decided to make it the power ranger costume.

The spider-man movies didn't hit home with me as much as they could... but I don't see the need for the dick head response... he just posted the story he found. I do think Thornton is the man though, best drinking movie ever in college (outside of Old school) is Bad Santa.

I thought Nicolas Cage was offered first.

Thanks for this. I never knew Billy Bob was considerd for this.
I thought Nicolas Cage was offered first.

Yes, he and also John Malkovich were also offered the role as well. So it looks like Dafoe was the 4th or 5th choice and probably the best of the bunch.

Glad Cage and Thornton passed on it. I couldn't really see either of them in the role. I think Malkovich would have kicked ass, but Dafoe nailed it. The only problems I had with the Goblin were with his costume.

I think it is a good thing that Thorton refused. Dafoe was simply perfect for the part.

Doc Ock was also in preliminary drafts.......

Billy Bob for GG. That would have been horrible. Dafoe nailed it.

Billy Bob as The Green Goblin???

Yet another example of me being very grateful of an actor turning down a role in a particular film, so another actor can step in and (thankfully) get the part.

kinda, makes you wonder, though
if they had cast, Thornton, Cage, or Malkovich, would they of still used James Franco, as harry
I thought, Franco and Dafoe, worked out great as father and son
but, I don't think he would of had that same kinda feel, with the others

Cheers for the link He-Man, a very interesting read indeed!

Billy could have done a good job, but it's Willem all the way in my book. He really nailed it. I could see John Malkovich do it. I just can't see Nicolas Cage doing the part justice though.

So what made them change from using a prosthetic mask to an armor mask?

has Dafoe ever had a bad performance? hes definatly one of the top actors out there

I think DaFoe's a great actor. He always gives 110% if not more to whatever role he's doing. Let's not forget this guy was nominated for an Academy Award for Shadow of the Vampire - he knows what he's doing.

I wouldn't have seen this movie if someone named Billy Bob played the Green Goblin.

Why? Because his dialogue would've been something like this:

"Woooooey! That dang ol' Spider-Man gone and thwipped his way outta this one. I gotta get me summa them boom-boom pumpkin thangies next time so that I can trap him. Maybe I'll get some with those pointy thangs that fly out the sides and throw 'em at 'em inside of a burnin' buildin'! That's a great idear! Norman, you so smart. No matter what them elemen-tairy school kids saids."

i thought he was fine

I didn't.

Halle Berry is an Academy award winner.

Nuff' said.
