A BioShock Film has been confirmed, and is to be released in 2011, coinciding with the release of BioShock 3.[1] The film was set to be directed by Gore Verbinski, director of the Pirates of the Caribbean series, but because of budget issues, and the prospect of filming some footage overseas, Verbinski has dropped out as director. The news was made public on 24 August, 2009. He will, however, remain the film's producer. Instead, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, who is best known for his horror sequel 28 Weeks Later, is in talks to helm the production. While Verbinski's style is very engaging, Fresnadillo could bring the sense of horror and dread that one can experience when playing Bioshock for the first time and that an audience member, who is being newly introduced to Bioshock lore, could experience as well.
The film will center around Jack, and will most likely follow the storyline of the game(for the most part). That being said, it is yet unclear if the plot will entail the saving or harvesting of Little Sisters (or a combination of both.) No actors or other personnel, with the exception of Verbinski as Producer, have been announced as of yet, though a rumor exists that Wentworth Miller is being considered for the role of Jack. Characters that have been confirmed in making appearances in the movie are the Big Daddy and Little Sister, Jack, Andrew Ryan, Frank Fontaine, Bridgette Tenenbaum, and Sander Cohen. Production news is likely to crop up in the following months, and roles are sure to be announced. For now, the film is being delayed at the moment due to the budget concerns mentioned above.

I thought this thing got put on hold?

Oh, and we already have a thread somewhere.

As a lot of people know the game was based off of Ayn Rand's novel Atlas Shrugged, which is about her philosophy objectivism. i think this could possibly be one of the first video game movies that could do well. this games was more then a FPS. so lets hope for the best

I've never read Atlas Shrugged, but always wanted to because it was Bioshock's main inspiration. Do you know what Bioshock borrowed from it?

Andrew ryan is pretty much based off the character john galt. the city of rapture and how it is a place where "every man is entitled to the sweat of their brow kind of thing. its a loooong book bout 1600 pages. john galt has a speech in it that takes 400 pages more or less, but if you read that you have andrew ryan and pretty much everything he stands up for and believes in

oh and by the way i checked and i couldnt find another bioshock movie thread so hopefully this one will get some feedback

it looks like it but if i want a director for Bioshock its got to be James Cameron. This man is crazy for water

"And the iceman cometh, Sander baby. The iceman ******* cometh." :)

The second one comes out tomorrow and there's still nothing on this film. I'm really eager to see what they can do with it. It will be tricky.

Never played the game, but I heard the comparisons to Atlas Shrugged which is my favorite book (check out my signature) so I'll watch the movie.

I thought this movie was dead... just like Gears of War, HALO, Call of Duty and all the other video game movies.

And maybe that's for the best...video games do not adapt to movies well, if at all.

Video Game movies need their spiderman. I don't want to see them horribly churned out like comic films were/are, but seriously something needs to be good enough to get the ball rolling

And maybe that's for the best...video games do not adapt to movies well, if at all.

name one videgame movie where the makers actually had any skill in writing or direction, or actually exerted any effort towards making a quality film.

if the projects were actually taken seriously they'd have a chance a turning out.

They were making a COD film??

Yeah, I think the video game movie genre can turn out great things. I just think right now it began like comic book films did. Hell, at least comic book films had Superman.

I think POP will finally break it. If it is a success Hollywood will hire actual talented directors and they will see POP thinking they aren't just peices of **** anymore. So is POP is good, it will get the ball rolling for better video game films, and we will probably here the start of more video game adaptions and new life into a Bioshock film (hopefully)

Sam Raimi with Warcraft could be promising... he DID make Spider-man...

how is this movie dead did they not get the guy who directed 28 weeks later for this project?

No idea... names are just being thrown around to keep the fans waiting...

I know that this thread is old but it seems like they're not hurry to release this because it will have to be an expensive movie.

If so, why not adapt the upcoming Bioshock Infinite game instead? it seems good, from the gameplay it wouldn't have to be R Rated as the enemies aren't splicers or scary people that seem undead, not to mention how it can be action packed with an interesting background.

Then, if successful it would be easier for a studio to make a movie based on the first game

Just make the movei a prequel to the first game with the rise and fall of Rapture. That is a great story that a) hasn't been fully told and completely seen, but should and b) is within the spirit of the entire ideas behind the games, something Levine said he would like to see. There is no point in trying to make the first game into a film when it's already great for what it is, move onto something different and new.

Yes, a movie about the Rise and Fall of Rapture would be great but movies should feel complete and not mere prequels to the games, the movie should stand on its oun universe based on the game but not be part of that universe.

As i said before maybe if they wanted to gain the studios trust for a big budget R rated film based on the Rapture setting maybe they should first do Bioshock film instead, it wouldn't have to be R rated and the characters from that game seem to have the potencial to be protagonists and so a game based on that game's story could work

I agree with this. Also don't forget that quote from Stanley Kubrick "if it can be thought, it can be filmed".

It's a bit of a shame people still look at video games as a puerile media
