Black Widow News and Speculation Thread

Relatively straightforward option: take the amount its earned on Premium Streaming, add it to the box office. Calculate residuals and bonus from there. That should at least land you in a defensible ballpark, since its not working off hypothetical "would have should have" numbers, but on an actual concrete dollar amount of revenue that it actually *did* draw in.

That isn't really a solve because who knows how much BO the D+ cost the movie. This is similar to gaging how much to compensate someone for pain and suffering. It is sort of arbitrary and you have to just come up with something that sounds fair

Yes. Its pretty much impossible to calculate how much money the movie lost because of piracy, or due to people paying for premiere access, and then showing the film to all their relatives and friends, who don't have to pay like they would if they were going to the cinema.

that's gonna be hard to do because as her filing states, it's like giving everybody who sees the movie opening weekend a free dvd on their way out of the theater. repeated viewings add to the box office

It is interesting to see what legal ground the Black Widow lawsuit holds per most recent article questioning and the back/forth headlines sure to ensue.

Going back to the contracts Disney did rework after Black Panther 2 as I said before the vax infusion conv. took off not spurred by myself.

Anyway if the contracts haven't been reworked movies coming up surely will need to refrain from dual release until Black Panther 2 presumably.

Chapek def seems to be a lot less creator friendly than Iger.
He was hired because he has a singular focus to increase profits and lower expenses for shareholders. Obviously every company has this goal but some don’t lose sight of not screwing over the talent. Chapek is going to learn that lesson the hard way.

An MCU movie flops and all hell breaks loose..Maybe they will finally have some control over their budgets now. They are not covid proof.

How come no one blames Alan Horn. Is it beacuse he is Iger's boy? The blame should be spread out more.

Mostly. People assume he lost most of his influence on WDS when Iger left and Alan stepped down as Studio Chief. Horn has an excellent reputation at multiple studios dating back decades, so the change in tenor at the Mouse seems more likely to be the responsibility of the Chapek-Bergman team.

Where's the flop? And whats wrong with their budgets? We cant even talk about BW which was filmed before COVID.

there's a reason a lot of the hardcore disney park enthusiasts didn't like it when chapek was in charge of that division

guess we'll see how this plays out, but pissing off talent is not a good thing for a studio to do in hollywood lol. wonder if iger will have to step in as chairman

Didn't Iger pick Chapek and train him as his replacement? What the heck happened here?

Also, how can Iger plead ignorance in all of this? he had no input at all in the whole Premier Access business and checking with the talent and their camps on this?

Also, is The Wrap really putting their content behind a paywall? Jaysis Frelling crud.

Lucas picked Kennedy and she back-stabbed him the first chance she got so...

Well he isn't wrong. But anyways Chapek needs to go, he is too much like Perlmutter.

Yes, but the point is that while it doesn't perfectly translate what could have been, it *does* have the virtue of actually covering what was earned in reality. Basically, its hard to impossible to figure out whether anything was actually lost from the D+ release. . . but its straightforward to go "But the money that actually did get moved from one box to another box, Johannsen should still get a cut". Because that money was still earned by the movie on release, it just got shifted from one box to another, and "I am paid based on movie revenue, this should not be avoidable by shuffling revenue from one accounting ledger to another" is an easier sell than "in an alternate universe I could have made more money".

( Especially since its highly dubious whether this actually *did* lose the movie any money versus a "normal" release during an ongoing pandemic. $30 group rate home viewings have to be balanced against "this family wouldn't or couldn't have otherwise seen the movie anyway, because pandemic". Likewise, piracy being a meaningful change in revenue is at best an unproven claim, especially with the many places that otherwise didn't and wouldn't have gotten a theatrical release anyway, due to pandemic. A person watching a pirated copy isn't a loss of revenue, *unless* it replaced what would otherwise have been a paying purchase. )
