The Side Effects is an upcoming movie directed by Steven Soderbergh and written by Scott Z. Burns.

The movie, formerly titled The Bitter Pill, is a thriller set in the world of Psychopharmacology, and follows a woman called Emily Hawkins, played by Rooney Mara, who is replacing Blake Lively. Emily begins to take experimental anti-depressants upon hearing that her husband, played by Channing Tatum, is going to be released from prison. Jude Law is playing Hawkins' therapist, who introduces her to the medication and later becomes her lover. Catherine Zeta-Jones also plays a therapist.

Shooting is scheduled to begin this April for a release date in the first half of 2013, distribuited by Open Road Films.

God, Lively is hot, but this actually sounds like an interesting premise also, so will keep an eye out for it.

As soon as I see that Tatum is attached to a project, I immediately lose a significant amount of interest in it. It never fails. I opened the thread and as soon as I saw his face, I thought "Aw, crap."

Well, he's becoming the Johnny Depp to Steven Soderbergh's Tim Burton, so there's that.

Really? Because I opened this and was like ''Ew, Lively? She's horrendous. Why is she getting leading roles?" And then I saw Channing Tatum and it became even more horrendous. So basically as it stands the old good portions of this film will be when Judge Law is on screen.

^I know we all have different tastes but how is Lively horrendous please? And are you talking about looks or acting?

I don't think Likely is all that bad. I don't see her winning an Oscar any time soon, but I think she's a decent enough actress. I think a lot of the hate towards her acting is simply due to the fact that she's on a CW show and has been tagged as one of the "it girls" right now by the entertainment media.

well tatum is doing something right working soderbergh and especially he is gonna get to work with bennet miller(Capote, moneyball) on his next movie

Lively is fine, it's Tatum that I have a problem with.

Same here, she is a decent actress, not bad at all, she was very good in The Town.

Yeah, she did really well in that film. Hell, I even thought she did fine in Green Lantern.

But Tatum... that guy is an acting vacuum. I saw him present a Golden Globe with Jessica Alba and all I could think was, "How the hell do these two get in the door of an awards show, let alone be allowed to present an award?"

Then it dawned on me. They're presenting because EVERYONE knows--unless God is unleashing some sort of plague upon the world--they will never win an award.

tatum's best performance was in guide to recognizing your saints

Yeah, well, Hayden Christiansen was good in Life As a House.

Early in an actor's career, there's a chance he could strike gold with a performance before dissolving into pile of bland crap.

I really don't get the praise for Lively in The Town. In film of great performances, her character is probably the easiest to pull off and while she was fine the role, there is nothing really remarkable about her. And her Boston accent. Echh.

no is saying give her an oscar people are just giving her some recognition

She's average at best and that has nothing to do with her coming from CW. I have no idea either why there's so much hoopla about her performance in The Town. It was decent and that's pretty much it. I have to give credit to her team though because they're really making smart moves for her. They've done an incredible job making people think that she's more than what she is.

Her acting of course. She's a very beautiful woman. And that must be why she's getting work. because she has done absolutely nothing special or even remotely decent in her career so far.

i would say she pretty solid in GL and the town

people give her too much crap

anyone seen Hick to see how she was in that?

The Town? She was good in that and it was a great movie. Its not like she was bad in GL either, she did the best she could with what she had to work with, i've seen worse performances in CB movies.

This somehow doesn't surprise me.

Annapurna Pictures Drops Out Of 'Side Effects' Over Casting Of Blake Lively; Potential Options Emerge, While Catherine Zeta-Jones Joins Cast

Well, that was quick. Just one week after announcing it had signed on with Open Road, the distributors of the film, to co-finance Steven Soderbergh’s psychological thriller, “Side Effects,” Megan Ellison’s Annapurna pictures has backed out of the project (however, Open Road is staying put to distribute the film). But it's not all gloom and doom for "Side Effects," though, as Soderbergh's "Traffic" co-star Catherine Zeta-Jones has just signed onto the project (via Deadline).

Variety's report doesn't state reasons why Annapurna backed away from the project, but well-placed sources tell us it had to do with the casting of Blake Lively as a troubled young woman who develops a dangerous love triangle between her doctor (Jude Law) and her newly paroled husband (Channing Tatum). Zeta-Jones, whose husband Michael Douglas is a frequent Soderbergh collaborator, would play another of Lively's doctors. Insiders tell us, despite the setback, financing should be locked back into place shortly, foreign sales are already taken care of, and an April start date in New York City is still a go. The big question is whether or not Lively will stick around. If she decides to leave (or if another studio also isn't super keen on her leading the picture, as Annapurna weren't) there are a number of names already being spit-balled, including Rooney Mara, Michelle Williams and two females that were being eyed for supporting roles in Soderbergh's now defunct version of "The Man From Uncle," Emily Blunt and Imogen Poots.

It should be noted that this isn't the first casting issue that has happened with "Side Effects," as Rachel McAdams was initially interested in the hotly contended role Lively currently holds. McAdams decided to do the similarly themed Brian De Palma project "Passion" instead, but the studios that were interested (before Annapurna, Summit and Paramount) each had their sometimes divided thoughts on who should lead the cast. Variety seems to think that the financing shake-up could jumble the entire cast, which is possible, as it eventually became a perfect mix-and-match (under the director's eyes anyhow) but right now we're hearing the biggest question mark is Lively.

If Lively does fall out and the actress is interested, Rooney Mara could be a potential contender, as Soderbergh, a close friend of David Fincher, was a big supporter of casting her in the lead of "The Girl In The Dragon Tattoo" when everyone else (including Sony) was giving Fincher **** for even considering the unknown.

Keep an ear to the ground as this one keeps developing.

I wonder what Soderbergh sees in Tatum or maybe hes building him up for Magic Mike.

soderbergh cast an mma fighter and a porn star as his leads
