Blizzard’s Jeff Kaplan on Overwatch’s ranked play philosophy

March 2, 2016 18 Comments

If you were hoping that the latest development video for Overwatch from game director Jeff Kaplan would reveal the ins and outs of the game’s ranked progression system, you’ll be disappointed.

But it’s not that he won’t reveal it, it’s that he can’t. There’s nothing to reveal yet. Discussions are still being had internally about the best way to handle ranked competitive play. Still, that doesn’t mean that he can’t talk at length about the philosophy behind ranked play and how that influences design, which is the focus on the video in question.

Kaplan frames the discussion as one where there are two extremes between players who are just shy of professional status and really want to rank players on one end, with players who are just casually goofing around at the other end. Many people fall somewhere in the middle; there’s a desire for distinct progression, but also a desire for enjoying play and not to get super-competitive. Check out the full discussion and the team’s musings in the video below.

Do you guys know if this will have split screen multilayer where you can play against someone sitting next to you.

I don't play many FPS games and was hoping to play this with my kids.

so I looked Found something about it in this interview:

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/no-cross-platform-play-for-overwatch-in-part-becau/1100-6432073/
On top of that, Kaplan said Blizzard hopes to introduce modding support for Overwatch down the line. This probably won't be in place for launch, but he stressed that, "We absolutely believe in modding." He added that local "split-screenmultiplayer & co-op would be awesome," though there are no plans at this moment.

he did say at the moment/ so wait and see. how very battle born has that so maybe while your waiting try that one out til blizzard announces it for overwatch.

I love the character design and game play dynamics for Overwatch, so I'm just going to wait for that one.

Thanks for the help!

Overwatch outlines its progression system and patches in new gameplay

March 23, 2016 12 Comments

Characters in Overwatch do not level. You can play nothing but Tracer day in and day out, and she’s still going to have the same ability set from start to finish.

But there is progression in the game, and a new entry on the game’s official site outlines how it works. It’s a system of unlocking skins, voice lines, sprays, emotes, and victory poses as cosmetic rewards for better performance, with each new level awarding a new random box of items. Already have what’s in the box? That’s fine; the items get converted into credits which can then be used to purchase the skins and so forth that you really want.

There are a few more rewards in the progression tree in the most recent beta patch, but the biggest addition with the patch is a new escort map, Route 66, and a new Weekly Brawl gameplay style inspired by Hearthstone‘s Tavern Brawl. The Play of the Game system has also received some tweaking, along with an option to let players save and replay their own personal highlights.

It’s all good stuff if you’re in the testing now, and if not, at least you can read up on how you’re going to be marking your progress.

What are you talking about? The official site says it comes out May 24. Amazon, Best Buy, Gamestop, Gamespot, Sony, Microsoft, etc. All the same date. Did you even check?

Overwatch : Soldier: 76 Disappears...Literally

Posted Apr 06, 2016

After the deployment of today's Overwatch patch, players quickly discovered a bug that allowed Soldier: 76 to become invisible if he donned one of his two new costumes,
Commando: 76 and Night Ops: 76. From what Blizzard explained on discovering the issue, the hero had to be disabled in game to fix the problem.
Due to the impact of this issue, we've temporarily disabled Soldier: 76 until we can patch in a fix. While not ideal, unfortunately the same issue that's causing the unintended invisibility is also preventing us from disabling the skin on its own.

We're currently working a new patch and hope to have it implemented this week.

In addition to the above, a new competitive play mode was added that allows players to compete and "rank up" through divisions and tiers during monthly seasons. Players must be at least level 25 to begin competitive play.
Progression rewards, penalties for leaving games, technical updates, map balances and hero balance changes have also been addressed.
You can read the full patch notes on the Overwatch site.
