Blu-Ray/Hi-Def - What is the statute of limitation before I'm considered out-of-date?

I know people who still use dial-up instead of broadband and have never heard of wi-fi. I have relatives who refuse to evolve from VHS because they think DVD players are too much trouble. While I see many people with iPods and MP3, my stepdad uses a portable casette player. And then there's me.

I want to be up-to-date with technology as much as possible, but I just don't see myself getting a blu-ray player or a Hi-Def TV anytime in the next 3 years. For a guy who's self-conscious about having the best in tech, how long do I have before I'm officially left-behind?

I'd steer clear of taking sides in this format war. No one wants to purchase beta-max 2.0. If you just can't help it I'd suggest blu-ray, it looks like it's winning.

There will be people coming into this thread yelling Blu Ray, and vice versa HD DVD. Just wait, because if you follow the formats that audio has followed, its easy to see that digitally distributed video is the next wave. Granted, I have both Blu Ray and HD DVD, as my flatmate has an HD DVD player, but still, abstain.

I have a 1080i Widescreen, and a 5.1 surround system, but even I'm waiting for this war to figure itself out.

A mod deleted the thread, so I only have it typed in....

I am refusing to get involved in the war.. I want to get an HDTV sometime soon, but I will steer clear of an HD player until the dust settles. I don't want to buy a Blu-Ray player and 20 Blu-Ray movies only to have HDDVD win and I have to buy a new player, and eventually re-buy those 20 movies.

It's a dumb war anyway, a real videophile war. I'm sure an HDtv and my dvd player is all I would need to be happy, I don't need to be able to count the grains of sand in S-M3.

HD-DVD is in the lead at the moment I believe

Thanks, I'm pretty sure I don't have to stress over not having, or being able to invest in, blu-ray. I'll still keep my eye on that possiblity, though now its very slim.

That's outrageous!

Oh, and there's no way to truly win unless you get both players or a dual Blu-ray/HD-DVD player... :D

skip Blu Ray and HD-DVD..by the time one of them wins, they'll both be obsolete due to things like On Demand and other digital distribution.

Yeah I don't want to get involved at all either, even after its over and one of them eventually wins, even then I may not. The DVDS are going to have to be REALLY REALLY good with new features and ****. I know some Blu ray and HD-DVDs are stripped down compared to their regular DVD counter parts. I'm not going to spend twice the amount of money when I have the regular DVD already with twice the amount of content on it. Again videophiles is what this is "war" all about. Its ridiculous.

I believe the general public (which includes me) is not ready to switch to the next home video format. Most of us just switched from VHS to DVD within this decade. We're still hunting down old movies on DVD. Not only that, but certain movie studios are only backing one of the new formats. Sony (who made the Blu-Ray) only puts their movies on Blu-Ray. Paramount is only backing the HD-DVD, so that's the only format they're releasing their movies in.

Everyone is asking us to choose a format, and with it, only a select number of movies. They're asking us to switch so soon after making the DVD our new standard. It's too soon, and too divided. Neither side is winning this war. They'll both get buried like the laserdisc.

I'm waiting as well to see which comes out on top.

Haven't any reason to get a HD tube or DVD player...yet.

Yeah, whatever happened to the convenience of having to rewind your movie for 5 minutes every time you want to watch it.
And it's such a hassle how if you want to see one specific scene, you just go directly there instead of seeking and seeking rewinding and fast-forwarding.

Get new relatives. :o

maybe 5 years. i don't like this stupid war either, but that's just how business works. i'd suggest waiting a year or 2 if you don't know what to buy. however, if you MUST choose a side to support then i'd suggest going with blu-ray just for the fact that you'd be supporting more advanced technology. it has more space on the discs. there's not much of a difference, like i said...it's just more advanced. also, i've observed that most companies are starting to lean towards blu-ray. blockbuster video doesn't offer hd-dvd titles on their website (only blu-ray) and if that's any indication of how the war will turn out then blu-ray has a good chance of coming out on top.
