We've all felt that emptiness inside, that quiet despair that comes from not having a copy of Failure to Launch with us at all times. Fortunately, Sony has heard our woeful lamentations and has found a solution, and no, it's not UMDs. Cue choir of angels. As Kotaku reports, Blu-Ray DVDs from Sony Pictures Entertainment will include portable files that could be included without a download, meaning you could simply shuffle them to portable media devices like laptops. Or, presumably, PSPs, which would be a very surreal way for Sony to come full circle, movie-viewing-wise
At CES, David Bishop, el jefe of Sony's home entertainment division, said "It's not currently part of anything on our current release schedule, but we'll probably roll it out sometime this year." Thanks for the specificity, Dave. Still, should be interesting to see how this all pans out. Think the portable files will work on a Zune?

It's a good idea, should work pretty well.

That's cool, I remember Apple was apparently trying to get studios to do something similar at one point for the IPOD Video, obviously didn't go through.

It would be cool to buy a Blu Ray movie and have a version of it I can load onto my PSP.

So I've been wondering since I heard about this: are these files found on the Blu-ray disc that can be downloaded onto a computer? If so, would that not mean that the user would need a Blu-ray drive in their computer to read it?

And how would this policed to keep people from sharing those instant movie downloads from being shared?

Good question actually. I wonder how that will be handled.

my guess, you rip it from your computer directly to your psp or other portable device, and make it so there's no way to rip it back ala corrupting the file if brought over to your computer, or just making the firmware in the psp not capable of transporting it

Just read an article over in the movies forum that porn producers are having to resort to HD-DVD because Sony are refusing to allow Blu-Ray to be used for porn.

Something about a company wishing to support Blu-Ray, but were refused by everyone they approached on the grounds of the pornographic content.

Sadly, this might turn those porno freaks over to HD-DVD...

Sony isn't Blu Ray, however they are a key/major player in it, and they have to remember that not allowing pornography centainly didn't help betamax.

I read an article in response where Blu Ray denied this, but it seems as if something is going on. Possibly a deal struck between the HD-DVD consortium and the porn companies.

Just another nail in Blu-ray's coffin. :)
