Congratulations to Bong. He has made better films but well done to him for being recognized as an international director.

I’m quite happy about Parasite’s awards.

But does anyone else think it’s a bit unfair that a movie can compete in two categories - i.e., “Best Picture” and “Best International Feature”? On one or two occasions (as I recall), a “Best Animated Feature” nominee also got to double up. To me, this seems like getting two bites at the apple.

As far as I know, an actor can’t enhance their chances and be nominated in two categories (best and supporting) for the same performance. So why is it different for movies?

(Apologies if this topic has already been covered.) :word:

Really enjoyed this movie, glad to see it winning all the awards. I had one MAJOR problem though, but no one else seemed to have noticed. Maybe it was a problem with my theater, but the sound effect of people's footsteps was the LOUDEST sound in the damn movie. Is that a metaphor for something? Was it intentional?

I understand the cultural significance of taking your shoes off and wearing slippers in the home, but every single damn step they took was SO loud to me. Walking through the house, up and down stairs, inside, outside, it was just so jarring.

Otherwise, I dug it!

Love Parasite so much, so ecstatic for the recognition and wider audience this win can bring to more foreign films. They should just get rid of the international film category altogether but that can only happen once the Academy puts all the excellent films outside of Hollywood and the US on even playing ground in all the categories.

I don’t mind the International category. Those films just don’t get a wide distribution in the US and so voters will even be less inclined to see them if they have to compete directly with US films.

A film like Parasite that takes hold of American audiences is rare.

The problem is those films would almost never be nominated then. If given the choice, the older Academy members are likely to nominate 8-10 American films. The Foreign Language Film category at least forces them to watch and acknowledge some of these movies.

It is possible for a foreign language film to also be the best movie of the year. That's why I don't have an issue with the potential double-dip. It's not like this is a frequent enough occurrence to pose an issue.

To echo @Persona and @Boom's great points: The International (fka Foreign Film) and Animated categories were created to shine a light on categories that VERY RARELY get enough exposure to the masses to make it to the major categories. In an ideal world, they're not necessary but they're the only way animated and especially foreign films can get recognized. It's not until very recently where these types of films are getting recognized enough to sneak in to the major categories. I mean Disney was able to sneak in a few of their animated films but it's quite rare. Parasite winning BP is an anomaly and the pessimist in me don't think it will replicated soon. But if the time comes that these types of films are given equal chances of being seen and awarded then yes, we don't need those categories but for now, we need them.

It's called sound design.
Whoa, really? I'm completely unaware of how movies work!

Yes, I know it's called sound design. I'm wondering why the sound of their footsteps was the loudest sound effect in the film. Is there a reason behind designing those sounds to be so loud?

I think competing in art is pretty dumb and no consensus weighs heavier than our own opinions, so I don't really care much about the Oscars. However, a foreign film winning best picture did make even me more interested in seeing it, which I now got around to.

It's a brilliant film. It's unpredictable, it has a fascinating balance between different genres, and it has so many messages in it's story, both hidden and obvious. The more I think about it, the more ideas and messages I'm uncovering, and still I'm quite certain I've missed quite a bit. This will definitely require multiple viewings, which I'll gladly go through.

I didn't notice it. I guess I need a 4th viewing to catch that. :D

Finally got a chance to see this as the Best Picture win finally bullied my local Cinemark into screening it lol. Fantastic film. I’m always a sucker for black comedies and this is that and more. So many great lines, gags and bits. And I’m sure I missed a million references that only someone in Korea would get. If I had one tiny complaint it’s that the second act is kind of bloated and there were one or two points where I found myself thinking, ok, let’s move it along now. But overall 9.5/0.
