Action-Adventure Borderlands - The Movie

Never played the games, but I saw what the characters are supposed to look and sound like, and man is this so terribly miscast outside of Claptrap and the girl playing Tiny Tina.

Roth must be so happy he filmed Thanksgiving right afterwards. He got his franchise after all lol

I've read some comments online making it seem like Roth was the victim in all of this and we need a Roth cut (thanks Zack Snyder) but judging by production videos and interviews of him making this, it seems like he's the one to blame for most of these casting decisions for this. His argument that "A great actor is a great actor and if you can get a great actor for your role you do it" falls a little bit flat when everyone in the film feels miscast.

Just finished the 3rd game. These games should have been so easy to make into movies, especially the first game which didn't have a particularly complex story.

Who was this made for?

I don't know if even the filmmakers know that. It's rated PG-13 and feels like a kid version of the games, but two of the leads are women around the 60 year mark who would probably appeal to older people. Maybe there's a tiny % of people out there with a thing for older women who are also into shooting games?

I didn't mind Blanchett as Lilith and JLC as Tannis personally. I could get with that casting.

Hart as Roland though was just weird. I haven't seen the movie but I just don't see that working at all.

I think Blanchett is a fantastic actor and one of the best of her generation but setting aside that she's 55 and Lilith is supposed to be in her 20s, I feel like it's just not in Blanchett's wheelhouse to pull off the Chris Pratt/Star-Lord character. Like you can have fantastic range as an actor and there will still be things that don't come natural to you. And the script plays a part to because she's not given any favors there.

The ultimate issue with the casting is that it goes against who they are marketing this film for which I would assume is teens. Because you have poop jokes (Claptrap ****ting nuts and bolts) and it's PG13 not R, yet I bet Cate Blanchett is someone pretty unfamiliar to this target demographic. I do agree that others are miscast as well such as Hart as Roland but it stands out a bit extra with Blanchett since she is the lead after all. And maybe this would have worked if this was a legacy sequel to Borderlands from 20 years ago where Cate Blanchett in her 30s is kicking ass. Setting up a new universe with your main character being an actor in her 50s definitely is a choice that goes against what you've seen in other films.

I never realised Lilith was supposed to be that young. She always came across a bit older in the games to me. Though I never played the first only the sequels.

And I thought Blanchett was 45 not 55! She looks fantastic but yeah going by that she wasn't the right choice for Lilith.

Yeah, in the first game, Lilith was supposed to be 22, I think. And by the end of Borderlands 3, she was supposed to be 34.

At least according to this:
