Bored to Death
Release Date:
20th September 2009. HBO
Plot:
Jonathan Ames, a young Brooklyn writer, is feeling lost. He's just gone through a painful break-up, thanks in part to his drinking, can't write his second novel, and carouses too much with his magazine editor. Rather than face reality, Jonathan turns instead to his fantasies moonlighting as a private detective because he wants to be a hero and a man of action.
Cast and Character Bio:
Jason Schwartzman - Jonathon Ames: A Brooklyn-based writer working on his second novel and the occasional piece for 'Edition' magazine, Jonathan likes Internet backgammon, white wine, marijuana and detective novels. It is some of these interests, combined with his propensity for procrastination, that cause Jonathan's girlfriend Suzanne to leave him. A questing, sensitive soul, Jonathan often turns to his best friend Ray or his mentor and sometimes-boss George Christopher for solace and advice. In addition to be a struggling writer, he has a yearning to be heroic and have adventures, and so he leads a double life as a Private Detective.
Ted Danson - George Christopher: The editor of 'Edition' magazine, and Jonathan's sometimes employer, George has been a tastemaker and man about town for decades. He's had three marriages and countless lovers. His penthouse bachelor pad and high-rise office may be peppered with souvenirs of his success, but George has become somewhat inured to a life that garnered him his own Chuck Close portrait. George has taken a liking to Jonathan, perhaps as a way to vicariously reclaim his youth and to escape boredom. Also, Jonathan has access to marijuana, which pleases George immensely.
Zach Galifianakis - Ray Hueston: A talented but not-yet-financially-successful cartoonist, Ray is Jonathan's best friend. He's something of a tormented curmudgeon and he isn't afraid to challenge Jonathan on an ill-advised decision, but when Jonathan's in trouble, Ray's there in whatever capacity necessary. He's Sancho Panza to Jonathan's Don Quixote. Ray's relationship with his beautiful girlfriend Leah can be strained at times due to his longing for sex in contrast to her need for sleep (she's a divorcee with two young daughters.)
