Batman Battle for the Cowl 2:
Todd fights Nightwing/Damien and kinda kicks their asses. In-comes the help from Huntress and Black Canary, so Todd shoots Damien in the chest. Robin is lurking around looking for clues and stumbled upon Todd's self-made Batcave. Him and Jason get into a fight, and Jason gives him the opportunity to join him as his Robin, saying that Gotham has changed since Bruce died and that the mob/rogues don't care about Bat's anymore because all they'll end up with is a split lip or a broken arm and some jail/arkham time, and that he is actually making them FEAR Batman again, rather than just toying with him like they have in the past X years. He starts to beat the ever living hell out of Tim, until Tim grabs a crowbar and starts whooping on Jason. Or so it seems. Cue to the last page of the book where it's Tim in his Batman outfit with a giant batarang sticking out of his chest. But only half of it is, because the other half is embedded in his lungs/heart area. So Tim's probably dead, as a lot of rumblings have said he won't make it out of this alive.

Was a good issue overall, can't wait for the end, as it should be pretty badass. 8/10

Green Lantern 39: Continuing the adventure of Hal, the newly made Blue Lantern, we get to some more insight on how the Blue Corps are going to operate.
According to Sayd, Hal was never meant to have a Blue ring, and was meant to act, essentially, as the Blue Corps battery. Something about him having enough willpower to fuel the entire Blue Lantern Corps. Also, the Blue rings cannot be taken off until they are drained of all their power, which the guardians try pretty hard to remove it by blasting him with a green beam. Oh, and Larfleeze shows up on a construct branded in Stel, after Stel chases a Sinestro Corps member into the Vega System. He basically says that he didn't care that the Guardians/GL's/Controllers invaded during the "spider wars" (the ****?) or when they ran a muck trying to catch Sinestro Corps members, but he was pissed that they ruined his feast (bwuh?) and now it's time for action. It's a pretty badass couple of pages, actually. And the 4th rule is announced, The Vega System is no longer a no-fly-zone, and it's time for the GLC to go to war.

I was supprisingly underwhelmed the first time I read it, but upon a second read I caught a lot of things I didn't. It's not very action packed like I expected (in fact most of the action in the book is seen in the previews), but theres a lot of important story points. Oh, and Philip Tan might be my new favorite artist, the [blackout]last few pages with Larfleeze[/blackout] made him look like a real monster, and actually scary.:up:/:up::up::up:

Solomon Grundy 2: This book is fun. It's not super deep, and it's not going to be something for everyone, but it's the kind of book I like. It's got Bizarro and Grundy fighting, and then later paling around. That's about all you need to know, go buy it and support lesser known author/artists, as the guy who wrote and drew the entire mini series, Scott Kolins, is relatively unknown. He's mostly done (after some wikiing) art corrections, and apparently did some work on the first 2 annihilation series as an artist. THREE GRUNDYS OUT OF FIVE.

Still got a good amount to read, but I know I won't go back and put those reviews up so whatever. And I know the first two are more "spoilers about the story" than reviews, but I dgaf. Some people want that, some people like reading a 4 page review on one book ;).

This isn't from this week, but I finally read Seaguy: Slaves of Mickey Eye #1 today. It's great. Very obscure when it starts out, but you quickly realize what's going on. Even after that becomes clear, though, there's still plenty to wonder about, but not in a confusing, "this writer must've forgotten something" sort of way--it's the "I gotta go back and reread this when the next issue comes out because I'm sure things that seemed confusing here will be made clear as the series progresses" way. So I'm looking forward to that. Cameron Stewart's art is great. Very bold and expressive. Looking forward to the next issue for the story behind the other Seaguys.

Well, from the people I talked to at/around my shop/area, only 1 of them knew who he was.

I mean sure, they probably will go "oh yeah that guy", but it didn't ring any bells.

He's pretty highly regarded on the interwebs 'cause of his Flash run with Johns. But I suppose that might not have been as widely read as I thought.

Huh. Guess the people around here...man, thank god for forums.

I picked up Wolverine: Weapon X #1 - It starts off with a good mystery/chase setup. Deep within the jungles of Cambodia, there a 5 or 6 black ops dudes runnin around killing villagers, and they all have 3 claws on each hand just like Wolverine. But their claws have a strange green Kryptonite glow to them. Weird.

Evidently Weapon X blueprints have found their way into the hands of the Roxxon Corp. Logan's old Team X buddy Maverick, who I haven't seen since Jim Lee was on X-Men, clues him in to what's happening and Wolverine is on his way. He finds an old lab in Canada with some butchered dogs, and Logan knows exactly how they got that way.

Deeper inside the abandoned lab, he finds not one, but about 2 dozen of the Adamantium bathtubs that made him into Weapon X. Logan then thinks to himself, "It's time for some killin'."

Anyway, good start to this arc. I'm not familiar with Jason Aaron but so far I like his take on Wolverine. I was a little suprised to see him chop off some dude's arm like it was nothing, but that was a cool scene. I really liked Ron Garney when he was on Amazing Spider-Man during Back In Black, but he seems off here. Maybe a little rushed or the wrong inker, I don't know but I was expecting better from him. I know the world wasn't begging for more Wolverine but I'll stick with it through the arc and see what happens. Good stuff.

Part I: Marvel Comics

All-New Savage She-Hulk #1

It seems pretty clear that Fred Van Lente pitched a story about Lyra and then Marvel, in desperate search for a semi-commercial title to give it, decided to use the now-dormant "She-Hulk"; at no point in the actual story is she called that. Anyway, I had no real interest in the premise, but Van Lente's #2 on my list of Marvel creators at the moment, so I'm generally game for stuff he's writing, and here we are (plus, the art, by Peter Vale & Robert Atkins, who I'd never heard of, is excellent; love to see these guys do some more high-profile work after this). Anyway, Lyra's headed back to our reality on a mission to save her future's cloning process (which is OsCorp-made, apparently), and runs into A.R.M.O.R. (one of VL's creations) and the original She-Hulk. Not a huge amount to write home about yet, but it's well-done.

Captain Britain and MI13 #12

"Vampire State" hits its third part (counting the prologue), as Dracula and his vampire army (with Viscountess Lilith, Captain Fate, and Baron Blood as his chief lieutenants) strategize to conquer the United Kingdom and turn it into a homeland for vampires. Cornell's said he wants to really show Dracula as a master strategist here, and he pulls off some clever moves (though the main one, that he wants Blade to lead him to where Quincy Harker's skull is, is perhaps one that somebody really should have considered). I like how he's written handling his armies; he's full of aristocratic pretensions, like insisting that all his top subordinates act with proper lordly protocol towards each other and their titles. Spitfire, meanwhile, is semi-under his control; enough to make her do what he tells her to, but not enough yet to actually influence her personality. That will obviously be the crux of her story here. This issue is mostly Dracula's show; not much with actual cast stands out, apart from Blade's terse explanation for what he plans to do to get Jac back.

Exiles #1

After handing this franchise over to Chris Claremont for a good, oh, thirty issues and letting him, predictably, run it into the ground (he's the poster child for creators who should have hung up their spurs a long time ago; he's just demolishing all the goodwill he justly accumulated in his early-middle career), we get the Volume Three relaunch. Jeff Parker's the new writer, and, based on the first issue, he looks to be a great choice. There's no mentions of anything from Claremont's volume initially, though since Morph is now the Timebroker, I assume they'll get around to explaining that eventually. Parker brings back stuff Claremont did away with, such as that the Exiles can't voluntarily leave anymore. The main cast (Blink, who is for whatever reason acting like this is all new to her; [Black] Panther, Beast, [Scarlet] Witch, Forge, and Polaris) doesn't seem all that different from their core 616 personalities, apart from Panther, who is implied to be a different person. Anyway, good fun (Morph has some hilarious dialogue).

Suicide Kings #1 was terrible. The majority of it was complete mischaracterization. I hate how DP is drawn like he's 20 pounds.

I use to enjoy Deadpool getting tricked every now and then (since him being bat**** crazy could lead to slip-ups), but this was just a generic set up.

On the other hand,

Battle for the Cowl #2 was excellent! Love Catwoman's line about Tim not being tall enough to be Batman. Love Jason's hardened attitude.
I hope Damien is dead
. Can't wait for #3

All the books I bought were great but Ultimate Hulk VS Ultimate Wolverine was straight sick! GL#39 was awesome and Battle for the Cowl was just as amazing! I wanted to get that Weaponm X thing but I didnt have the cash, maybe tom.!

I didn't find Suicide King's to be that terrible when it's pretty much a continuation of Way's regression of Deadpool's character (sorta like Loeb's Hulk, except the book doesn't suck).

I didn't pick it up. I was going to, but then I realized that all Marvel is doing is ****ing out Deadpool cause of the Wolverine movie, so I decided not to. That, and of the few pages/panels I read I didn't like. At all.

It was alright. It had some funny moments, but Way's Deadpool is far better.

Nothing of Way's is better

While I am enjoying Way's Deadpool It's got nothing on Cable and Deadpool.

Easily my favorite "new" artist. I would LOOOOVE for him to be doing Marvel stuff again. What's he been up to at DC other than the above? Anything trade-worthy?

Hawkeye - Dark Reign #1 - I actually picked up this title thinking, "Aren't they doing a Hawkeye mini with Mockingbird?" I completely forgot what was going on. I probably would have picked it up anyway, but I like that it caught me off guard. Basically, this whole mini will be Bullseye going nuts under the guise of "hero." I think the upcoming Spidey-DR mini is appoximately the same. I liked it. There's good interaction between him and Norman. And there's a sequence at the end where [BLACKOUT]he saves a woman from being mugged/raped, and then kills her too!(I get the feeling he doesn't like people referring to Norman as his "boss" as this poor woman does).[/BLACKOUT]

I was looking forward to the Spidey-DR mini, and now this one is off to a good start...

Dark Reign: Hawkeye #1 was fun. I like how Bullseye called out Osborne on him fronting the whole 'hero' angle of these Avengers. The team seems to be showing some major cracks.

Actually, I think the last thing I saw Kolins on before Solomon Grundy was Omega Flight. He hasn't done much of anything since returning to DC until Grundy.

Captain Britain and MI-13 was great. Dracula displays the class and skill you would expect of a man with hundreds of years of military experience under his belt. The heroes do sort of fall for the trap a little too easily, but I suppose it's possible that not even Blade knew the extent to which Dracula could control his minions. Speaking of, it's nice to see that Spitfire still has some control over herself. I hope she finds a way to break Dracula's hold on her. I'm a big proponent of magic as the ultimate trump card, but in this one instance I'd like to see a human will to do the right thing overcome it.

Of course, since I'm always on the lookout for Dane-centric stuff, I'm very curious about Captain Fate's comment regarding the Magus (I think) Sword. Although, having looked up Captain Fate's unofficial appendix page to see what his deal was, I'm sort of disappointed that Kirk simplified his design so much. His earlier design was so much more piratey and fun. Now he looks like one of those dudes on the covers of romance novels.

Other than that redesign, however, Kirk's art continues to be fantastic. It's not the flashiest, but he grabs your attention when the story demands it and he does solid narrative work everywhere else. I really liked the way he drew Pete Wisdom's sunglasses, too. I don't know why that stuck with me. Also nice to see Dane and Faiza in their knightly garb once again. I wonder if those are their permanent costumes now.

Cable #13 and Deadpool 9 was the best DP in a while. They are ****ing him now, as someone said above, and I feel all this other weak **** (i.e.- Suicide Kings and his stupid appearance in Marvel Zombies 4-#1 this week) is going to do more harm than good in the future for the character

Actually, OF was one of the few instances that I didn't like as much, but this had more to do with the inking/coloring.

I'm eternally grateful that he gave Beta Ray Bill lips, if nothing else. His crazy horse-rictus always made him look really awkward to me.

Lips make the face more expressive, and more expressive = better for me.
