All Avengers All day for me today. Just two books,...
Mighty Avengers #21 - So far, a great start for Slott, I'll say. Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch has appeared out of limbo and mysteriously begins to gather heroes for an unknown reason. As the previews show us, Vision II, Cassie Lang, the Hulk, and US Agent as Hercules and Amedues Cho find Jarvis, as he is integral to the Avengers, and need to assemble a team to combat the 'Chaos Cascade', as Cho named it, which is all these crazy events happening all the world over, seemingly at random. Jarvis, Herc and Cho find Henry 'Wasp' Pym and declines to help as he is too busy. Slott gives us some insight into Pym insecurities and reluctance to join and not one mention of his wife beating tendencies, which is a welcome change.
As far as the big bad, some naked guy in a green cloak calling himself Mordred (who I assume is an Avengers villian from back in the day) is conducting some kind of spell be awaken another bigger, bad. Again, great start for Slott and these Mighty Avengers as I think true Avengers fans are in for a treat. Slotts dialog and characterizations are great and I am eagerly awaiting to see how this all plays out. Very Avenger-y, indeed.
Another round of Avengery goodness, Dark Avengers #1 - Say what you want about Bendis and his teambook writing skills, I liked this issue. Here, he basically takes what is great about the Avengers and twists and perverts it as Norman Osborn see fit to do. I never read the Thunderbolts, but it seems it's the same idea. Only now they moved up to the big leagues. I will say to Bendis' credit, he assembles the entire team in this issue, and in classic Avengers fashion, presents Osborn's Avengers to the world on the steps of Avengers Tower. Yes, it's certainly nothing new, in fact I don't think you can have an Avengers team without the balloons and fanfare, but knowing who these Avangers are, makes it all the more creepy. I don't know if creepy is the right word, but Norman Osborn leading the Avengers (yes, as the Iron Patriot) is just wrong. Yes yes dark times and drastic measures. I'll say this, I am not going anyware and cannot wait for the New Avengers/Dark Avengers battle.
Anyway, I like Bendis' pace as we see Osborn recruiting his members one by one. The real Ms Marvel has a great scene at Avengers Tower as Norman basically gives her the 'Join us or be arrested' routine. Another cool scene with Venom's feeding time, Bullseye's new gig, and a quick funny between Ares and Moonstone. Alright, I'll just confirm it now, the Dark Avengers are: Marvel Boy, the Sentry, Moonstone as Ms Marvel, Ares, Dakon as Wolverine, seemingly Bullseye as Hawkeye (they don't come right out and say it, but it's gotta be) and Venom as Spider-Man. Good stuff all around. Oh, and you gotta love Deodato's Tommy Lee Jones as Norman Osborn!!
Mighty Avengers will have a firm place on my pull list, and Dark Avengers will definately be there too. Don't miss 'em Avengers fans!!
