Comparing YTD domestic box office numbers.

Before May...

2017 $3,723.8
2016 $3,564.3
2015 $3,254.6
2014 $3,173.3
2013 $2,909.6
2012 $3,314.5

As of today...

2017 $7,495.4
2016 $7,990.2
2015 $7,600.9
2014 $7,246.4
2013 $7,640.6
2012 $7,577.6

This was an epic failing for the summer 2017. The box office has to average $147M a weekend from here on in order to crack $10B, which it has done since 2009.

I don't know if that's possible. JL, Thor, and TLJ will certainly help, but there doesn't seem to be a lot left of the docket. How much will Blade Runner bring? How will Jumanji do?

I think we're looking at a below $10B yearly domestic total for the first time in 8 years.

I don't think there will be any problems for 2017 to reach $10B. The year is still ahead of 2014 which was a miserable year, but still able to reach that milestone. September looks like it could be a strong month with IT maybe setting new opening weekend record for the month next week. And toward the end of the year I'm sure the new Star Wars-movie will have a monster opening.

September is starting huge with It. Could do over 100m. That would be nearly twice as much as the next biggest September opening.

Fantastic OW for the film, and personally, in my view, greatly deserved. Absolutely loved it. Can't wait for Chapter 2.

Okay so congrat to Universal for both Fast 8 and DM3 passing 1B. What's amazing is even though both movies rely HEAVILY on overseas markets AND US$ is strong they still pass the 1B mark with plenty left in the tank. Zootopia and Dory won't be safe and DM3 will probably become 4th highest grossing animation behind Frozen, Minions and Toy Story 3.

IT was a surprise with 3rd highest opening weekend of 2017 behind BatB and GotG 2 and even above SPH (and Wonder Woman).

Apes' situation is just... sad. It's even sadder than last year's Star Trek Beyond (which opened to about the same) considering it being such a huge critical darling.

I wonder TLJ can race ahead of Wolf Warrior to become highest grossing movie in a single market of 2017.

It seems that Disney and Universal are the only studios able to produce billion dollar films consistently. WB, despite being the #2 movie studio, seems to be stuck in the 800+ million range with their heavy hitters (BVS, SS, Fantastic Beasts, WW). Here's hoping that changes and JL is able to cross the billion dollar mark!

STAr Wars 8 will be the first movie to break a billion dollars domestically. It will crush all records. $300 million opening weekend.

Eh, I dunno about that. I actually expect TLJ to go down from TFA. Still likely a 500-700 million domestic gross though.

Right now, thanks to the help of It, Warner Brothers and Buena Vista domestic and WW grosses for their 2017 movies are practically equal. Albeit WB has released 13 films and Disney only 5 films.

I think Disney will pull ahead as WB will have their Lego Ninjago, Blade Runner and JL, while Disney has Thor, Coco and Star Wars

Sorry to see BR:2049 was a first weekend bomb. Hopefully it gets some legs with the positive WOM.

Happy Death Day seems to be wide open for a solid weekend coming up.

It's depressing to see a trash movie like Beauty and the Beast as #1
