Rise of the Silver Surfer BOX OFFICE Discussion

Weekend estimates from BOM:

1. Transformers - $ 67.6 mil; $ 152.5 mil so far
2. Ratatoiulle - $ 29.029 mil (- 38.3%); $ 109.546 mil so far
3. Die Hard 4 - $ 17.4 mil (- 47.9%); $ 84.16 mil so far
4. License to Wed - $ 10.4 mil; $ 17.816 mil so far
5. Evan Almighty - $ 8.114 mil (- 46.4%); $ 78.101 mil so far
6. 1408 - $ 7.14 mil (- 33.0%); $ 53.789 mil so far
7. Knocked Up - $ 5.159 mil (- 29.4%); $ 132.0126 so far
8. FF 2 - $ 4.15 mil (- 54.6%); $ 123.791 mil so far

If the actuals hold up, Transformers will take the record for the biggest opening week for a non-sequel (previously held by Spider-Man).

Once again, what the hell are you smoking ? Spider-Man had $ 114.8 opening weekend. $ 67.6 is a far cry from $ 114.8. Count 7 days since Monday, Spider-Man is only hundreds of thousands behind, and Spider-Man had a $ 71.4 2nd weekend, 37.8 % drop. So TF is not even close. Don't even try to compair Spider-Man to TF. TF can't hold a candle to Spider-Man, or carry Peter's jock strap.

Now don't be hating carpy.

He's a Marvel fanatic....:)

There's no way TF will match Spidey 1's original run, but it's damn impressive what it's doing so far.

'Transformers' dominates box office
Robust robots squash 'Spider-Man' record
By PAMELA MCCLINTOCK

With moviegoers transforming the July 4th holiday box office into non-stop fireworks, DreamWorks and Paramount's "Transformers" scored the highest seven-day performance for a non-sequel in history, clobbering previous record-holder "Spider-Man."

Pic closed out its 6 1/2 day opening at an estimated $152.5 million from 4,011 screens, including an estimated weekend take of $67.6 million. "Spider-Man" made $151.6 million during its first seven days.

"Transformers" and other films benefited from an unusually hectic July 4th holiday week at theaters, bookended by two lucrative weekends.

Coming in at No. 2 behind "Transformers" was holdover "Ratatouille," which needed no re-heating on its second weekend out. Disney-Pixar toon made $29 million from 3,940 screens for a new cume of $109.5 million.

Likewise, 20th Century Fox's "Live Free or Die Hard" stayed buff. Taking the No. 3 spot, film made an estimated $17.4 million over the weekend from 3,410 screens for a new total of $84.2 million.

Coming in at No. 4, Warner Bros. laffer "License to Wed" made $10.4 million from 2,604 engagements for a six-day opening of $17.8 million. Film bowed July 3.

Taking the No. 10 spot was Michael Moore's docu "Sicko," distributed by Lionsgate for the Weinstein Co. Holdover made an estimated $3.6 million as it expanded to 702 screens over the weekend for a new cume of $11.5 million.

I'm just stating facts. Kepping the record straight, as I always do. Trying to compair Spider-Man to TF's. That insults me.
no it seems your kinda mad TF has made over 100 mill and took FF2 awhile to do so. Its okay to admit so.

You need to brush up on your reading comprehension, Carp. I wasn't talking about the opening 3-day weekend. I was talking about opening week (as in, y'know, the first seven days). Spider-Man made $ 151.622 mil in its first seven days. That set a record for the biggest first week of any non-sequel. Transformers, if the actuals hold up, has set a new opening week record for a non-sequel at $ 152.5 mil. Those are stone cold facts, Carp. Seriously, buy a vowel.

It's not a hillarious post. Just about every huge film this summer had a 60% drop in week 2. Everyone knew the film would open big, but you know Harry Potter will take the no. 1 spot on Wednesday and the weekend.

You can't "show good legs" when the film has been out less than a week.

We'll see how it holds up next weekend.

No one knew TF would open THIS big. It's similar (though on a smaller scale) to what DMC did last year. You knew it would open well, but not quite this well. I mean, who thought it would break a few Spider-man records along the way? I sure as hell didn't.

They should duke it out for the next few weeks....here and in INTL waters. From what I've heard, TF is doing pretty damn good in the countries it has opened in already. Potter will easily win WW, I'm just impressed with how much people are enjoying TF.

That really does not bother me. FF held it's own. It's disapointing, but hey that's the way the box office crumbles. But noones going to come in here, and try to compair a 5 decade comic legend, to an 80's fad without challange. TF's has done as I expected. Starting Wednesday we'll see. If it can hold against HP, and what else is out there, I'll be impressed, and will say so.

Yeah it probably will break the 7 day record only because Spider-Man was an early May release.

It won't come close to SM2's 7 day record, which is why they put the "non sequal" moniker on it. It also isn't going to make 400 million like Spider-man.

If Spider-Man had opened 3 days early like TF's did, TF's would still be chasing. However, point noted.

I know this was directed at Carp, but I'll interject anyway, I always knew Transformers was going to be a 200 mil + movie (possibly 300), so at least for myself, I'm not jealous.

I do find it hillarious the nitpicking about changes to Doom and how juvenile FF is when:

Bumblebee pees on someone.

Megatron only in name resembles his cartoon counterpart.

The frickin S7 guy has a Superman logo on his undershirt.

I actually like both movies, but it does show how hypocritical fanboys are around here.

That just sounds funny.....

I figured it would. It's got appeal on several demographic levels. I said all along I thought it would end up in the high 200's, now it looks as if 300 is a real possibility, depending on how it holds up.

Again as noted above, it will break Spider-man 1's 7 day record, but again your talking about a May release vs a film that had a full day opening the Tuesday before the 4th of July.

FYI, Pirates 3 passed $ 300 mil domestic this weekend.

:woot:

Has there ever been a summer where three movies have hit 300 dom.??
EDIT: make that four if Harry P. hits it.
The summers of 1994, 2002, 2003, and 2004 each had two films go over $ 300 mil domestic. This is the first summer to have three films (or more) do so. What's really amazing is that three films all released in a single month did it.

thanx. I wasnt real sure, but I thought this was the first time it had ever happened.:yay:

GreenKToo,

Noticing your signature,....I was wondering if you'd heard the rumor about Hugo Weaving being considered for the role of Sub Mariner.

wow, really?? I hadnt heard that, but now that you mention it, I could see him in that role.

Yeah, I heard that rumor some time ago and have asked people about it in several forums. Evidently no one has come across this but me. Thought maybe you guys had.

I can really see that.

SUNDAY STUDIO ESTIMATES: 'Transformers' w/$67.6M; Optimus Prime's 7-day of $152.5M is #1 all-time for a non-sequel; 'Ratatouille' solid, but dips below $30M; 'Live Free' w/$17.4M; 'Rescue Dawn' appears to have pulled off a PTA upset

by Steve Mason

SUNDAY MORNING: All of my Saturday estimates (released last night at about 11:30p) were right on and confirmed by Box Office Mojo this morning. The official 3-day studio estimates are calling for $67.6M weekend for Transformers compared to the $67.3M I called for Friday night in my Exclusive Fantasy Moguls Early 3-Day Estimates. The studio estimates call for a 25% Sunday drop for the robot epic, but I suspect it could be closer to 20%. To summarize:

-All-time biggest Tuesday ($27.85M)
-All-time 3rd-best Wednesday ($29.07M)
-All-time 5th-best Thursday ($19.17M)
-All-time 16th-best opening 3 days of release [Tuesday thru Thursday] ($76.1M)
-All-time 4th-best opening 3 days of release for a non-sequel [Tuesday thru Thursday] ($76.1M)
-All-time 12th-best opening 4 days of release [Tuesday thru Friday] ($98.6M)
-All-time 2nd-best opening 4 days of release for a non-sequel [Tuesday thru Friday] ($98.6M)
-All-time 9th-best opening 5 days of release [Tuesday thru Saturday] ($124.5M)
-All-time 2nd-best opening 5 days of release for a non-sequel [Tuesday thru Saturday] ($124.5M)
-All-time 6th-best opening 6 days of release [Tuesday thru Sunday] ($143.7M)
-All-time 2nd-best opening 6 days of release for a non-sequel [Tuesday thru Sunday] ($143.7M)
-All-time 6th-best opening 7 days of release [Monday thru Sunday] ($152.5M)
-All-time best opening 6 days of release for a non-sequel [Monday thru Sunday] ($152.5M)

I hate to brag, because I’m regularly humbled by this business, but if you scroll all the way down to the column I wrote on Monday that details the final industry tracking for Transformers, my prediction for the 7 days was exactly $152M. (Occasionally, I get one right.)

It will break the all-time Tuesday record of $15.7 million set by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest last summer. The Monday previews will take some of the "juice" out of Tuesday, but it will still likely grab something over $30 million. Wednesday will drop (because of the holiday) to something in the $21 million range. Thursday will be its softest day, at $15 million or so. Friday could hit $25 million, followed by $28 million on Saturday and $19 million on Sunday. That's $152 million.

Note : He was dead on.
