Rise of the Silver Surfer BOX OFFICE Discussion

Honestly before seeing teaser-trailer I had doubts sequel would work better than the previous film. But now I changed my mind (still I have some worries).

My early predictions:
Opening Day: $16m
Opening Weekend: $51m
Domestic: $166m
Foreign: $153m
Worldwide: $319m

As FF had terrible legs, we can see that not so many people likied it. So that's why it will be hard for sequel to prove it's quality and it's opening won't make any records or amazed faces. Though it has not the best month in summer (except August) and very massive competition (I doubt either Spidey 3 or AWE will chill out by this time), it still will get not bad WOM and legs.

After seeing 300 opening weekend I kina feel that F4-2 is i trouble.

I don't now but i feel it won't get this openign weekend like 300.

The polls have indicated 300 to be a more anticipated movie than f4-2 as seen at boxofficemojo and other sites.

Also the entire internet supported 300 with all fan driven sites praising it before it even released.

And also 300 was visible in every convention show etc. I don't know but something tells me that even if f4-2 gets 70 million openign weekend it won't be considered good at all. People will laugh.

And hence more negativity will start.

I am hoping f4-2 surprises the crap out of everyone by getting a 85-95 million opening weekend.

I am wondering now how much 300 will do overseas since such movies make huge money there.

maybe 300+ overseas and 150+ domestically.

Man i don't know if f4-2 will reach any of those numbers.

I think marvel, fox and f4 are stuck in a bad situation because if f4-2 does not get a bigger openign weekend than 300 then the entire media will make fun of them and declare f4-2 a failure. I can see that happenign :csad:

oh well if that happens i will forget f4-2 existed and buy 300 since it rocked.

But what if you really enjoy F4 2? because it doesn't do as much as 300 and other people's opinions....you won't buy the DVD??????

Many people really enjoyed the first F4 movie....the critics didn't like, and it was laughed at quite a bit on the internet.....do you think the people that really enjoyed it gave a crap about those things.....the people I know loved it, and they have no idea what the critics or internet thought.....

Make up your own mind, if you enjoy it....buy it.....

I expect no less than 80M opening weekend for FF2. Actually, I'm leaning towards 81-90M. All because of the Silver Surfer, without him the movie would have trouble making 60M.

The June release date still scares me but I think that this movie will get the june opening weekend record, unajusted. And if you don't count Spider-Man 2 as a June release because it spilled over into July on it's weekend. Anywho I think people are excited about going to the movies and GhostRider and FF1 (ironically) showed that if you have a enough cool visuals in your film people will come out to see it no matter how bad it looks. I'm thinking 80/205mil now.

I dont get it if 300 a far more darker movie than FF made 70M OW how the hell will FF 2 make less than that since it appeals to a broader audience??? I say FF 2 OW will be in the range of 90 - 100M at least.

dark movies are considered cool by teens and young adults while light get s families n kids.

aka they can both make hella lot of money

Put the trailer with Spider-Man 3 and that will help promote the film a lot. Guessing for it to make between $60-$85 million the first weekend.

I hope this does well because the SS is my favorite comic character but I think this movie is just coming out in the wrong summer. There are just so many big films coming out competing for the summer dollar that even if this film is better then the first it still may not do as well.

With the Skrek3, SM3, Pirates 3 guaranteed to make between $300 to $400 million a piece and Harry Potter a sure thing for $250 to $300 domestic plus all four will approachor break a billion worldwide I just don't see where that leaves the dozens of other movies to be released this summer. Some high profile movies are going to bomb and right now the FF2 and Transformers look appear to be the most likely. At least one possibly both will underperform.

The 15th of May is a lot closer to opening. About 30 days close. What would a prediction thread without a poll be ? Of course I'll add a poll. 2 to be exact. Mabey 3 if I decided to add an opening weekend poll also. You know The Thing 2005 loves polls. I like women twirling around on them also. :woot:

Hmmm, it's weird that you're so insistant on making your own box office thread. Why, even after the mod overlords say there's no need for it ?

Anyways, I think FF2 will make around $200m in the US.

Some of his best fights on here came in his BO thread.....so I'm sure he's looking forward to that....:cwink:

I've been crazy most of my life.

Long before you became a geek uh?????:oldrazz:

It depends on your definition of geek.......I feel that everyone is a geek in somebody's eyes.

I'm sure that to someone....because I'm 50 years old and like comics, I'm a geek.....but to me......people who paint themselves different colors and dress up in weird clothes to sit in the snow and cheer someone on a ball field aren't all there either.

The whole world is populated with geeks.

2 : a person often of an intellectual bent who is disapproved of</I>

I don't think we really have any of these around here....well maybe Carpy fits #1.....lol:oldrazz:

Interesting article from VARIETY on the apparent disconnect between critics and moviegoers: http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117961277.html?categoryid=1&cs=1

Critics critiqued:
Film reviewers, moviegoers disagree

"300"

Box office data this year suggests that filmgoers seem to be having a great time at the multiplexes. The critics, by contrast, may be shopping around for a new line of work.

In reviewing "300" last week, for example, A.O. (Tony) Scott of the New York Times, said the movie was "as violent as 'Apocalypto' and twice as stupid."
That comment reflected the consensus among critics not only on "300" but also on "Ghost Rider," "Wild Hogs," "Norbit" and the other movie miscreants unleashed on the public since Oscar time.
The situation underscores yet again the disconnect between the cinematic appetites of critics vs. those of the popcorn crowd. The kids who storm their multiplexes to catch the opening of "Night at the Museum" don't give a damn what the critics think ("Museum" has passed $525 million worldwide).
The distribution gurus say they prefer "four-quadrant movies," but I"d suggest that there are only two: One quadrant consists of the hardcore fans who are propelled by "buzz" and the second embraces the rest of the filmgoing public who wait to learn whether the movie"s any good or not.
So several questions present themselves: If the established media want to stay relevant, should their critics make a passing attempt to tune in to pop culture? In short, should at least someone on the reviewing staff try to be relevant to both quadrants?
The reviews of "300" remind us that the literature of disdain is much more fun to turn out. Scott, the Times critic, for example, predicted that the movie would become "an object of camp derision," and would appeal mainly to "devotees of the pectoral, deltoid and other fine muscle groups."
Kenneth Turan"s review in the Los Angeles Times, basically a prolonged wince, also noted that "300" was "Apocalypto" violent," adding, "There is a limit to how often you can see soldiers speared and hacked to death and still stay involved."
Perhaps, but the first week"s "involvement" totaled some $70 million at the box office.
"Ghost Rider" didn"t register a single positive review on Variety"s Crix Picks chart ("Cheesy Rider" headlined the review in the New York Post) but the movie has passed $156 million worldwide. "Night at the Museum" inspired Stephen Holden of the New York Times to this lumpy metaphor: "The movie is an overstuffed grab bag in which lumps of coal are glued together with melted candy."
There"s always a degree of culture shock when movies this inept produce numbers this ecstatic. Several glib explanations suggest themselves.
From a marketing standpoint, we are reminded that February and March are oddly underrated by the studios. Every "tentpole" movie seemingly has to be released within the eight week May-June corridor of self-destruction. Yet clearly a lot of filmgoers would like to be entertained in the post-Oscar period as well, and they deserve better than they are getting.
As for the critics, they should consider a sabbatical until September, when movies aimed at their quadrant magically reappear. After seeing "Ghost Rider" and "300" back-to-back, battle fatigue has clearly overwhelmed the entire fraternity. And, by the way, if you've ever met a film critic, you"ll know they're not big on either the pectoral, deltoid or other muscle groups.

Sorry, double post....

:o Ouch!!!!! But I agree....

That's why I make up my own mind on movies...

I could probably be 100% correct in saying......if I asked my students what critics they read in order to pick movies, OR do they even care what critics say about movies....95% of them would say "none" to the first question....and "no" to the second....

As far as summer blockbusters thats the age group that are the multiple viewers and bring in the big bucks......thats quite a large % of the audience that I think critics either think are too stupid to think for themselves....or simply just too stupid......

The are wrong in both cases....:o

Sometimes I agree with the critics and sometimes I don't. I do read reviews and I might actually listen to a few critics on a certain genre, but at the end of the day I make up my own mind on a film. I found SR to be a dull dated rehash in which Superman just lifted heavy things, but I liked POTC2. The critics liked SR and were split on POTC2, I didn't agree with them but I understand why they liked SR more. They let a school teach them how to watch movies, so every movie no matter what it's heading for has to be 100% focused on the characters and nothing else. Oh they let some directors get away with things but on the whole thats how I think they look at films. Even if it's a comedy or an action movie or an action adventure film. Doesn't make sense to me but hey nothing much does in this world.

Since the trailer came out with Spider-Man 3 and the crowd reactions seemed very postive. What are everyone's prediction now after seeing the trailer?

I will say about 230mil+ in the US and over 500mil+ Worldwide.
92mil opening weekend.

Ok this is number 2
June release
Major competion as all the big movies are still around

75-100 million [Edit] opening weekend

200 million plus domestic.

65/70 mill opening weekend, 165/175 mill dom. 350 mill W.W.
