Rise of the Silver Surfer BOX OFFICE Discussion

Oceans 13 in it's 2nd week isn't much of a threat at all. Even if they competed head to head it's the same exact movie for the 3rd time. The movie is just a sad excuse to allow famous people to mingle together on screen and show off their faces. Oceans 11 was a fun movie. Ocean's 12 was utter trash. Oceans 13 looks a bit better but haven't we already seen this before. I doubt many kids will be rushing to see Ocean's 13 over and over again. FF is that type of film and the Silver Surfer is turning on a lot of new people.

Don't kid yourself, son.

The first Oceans film made over 100 Million more than the first Fantastic 4 film did and Ocean's 11 wasn't even released in the summer, that's not even bringing up the critical acclaim of 11. The second Oceans(12) made over 30 Million more than F4 and it too wasn't released during the summer.

To put it nicely, Oceans has more star power than any Tim Story film will ever have, and that's including Alba.:cwink:

As we've already seen this summer, third installments of trilogies tend to give off a "been there, done that" vibe, and this will be even stronger with Ocean's 13 which is another retread of the same plot in a crowded summer. Plus Ocean's Twelve sucked hard.

Excel said in another post that it was tracking somewhere at 55 million, 6 million higher than the week before, and as he stated most of the movies opened above their tracking, including Ghost Rider and especially 300.

So if it adds another 6 million for this week by tomorrow and 10 million with increased exposure next week, you have 70 + million in tracking.

Hopefully FF will open above the tracking as well, 80 million would be nice.

Right now things are looking good.

I think the PG rating will certainly help as many parents might not understand the differences between this film and X-Men. There is no mutant with razor claws carving people up, or getting shot in the forehead point blank with a gun. There is comedy in this film and it's more accessible to younger people as is the comic book itself.

F4-2 is going to need at the very least a 70 million opening if it wants a chance at 200 million domestically. There is way too much competition every week and with Fox positioning this flick as more family friendly, it will compete with Evan Almighty, which while many don't agree, should do very good business. And even 200 million may not be doable with a 70 million opening as it would need a 2.8 multiplier and with this being a sequel I don't see it having the same multiplier as the first one. So, if it opens more toward 80 million then it should hit 200 mil, but if it opens under then it will miss that mark.

It'll need an $ 80 million opening to have a shot at $ 200 mil in my opinion.

I accidentally voted for "Less than $130". I thought the poll was for opening weekend :o Now I understand why the numbers were so high =/

I think domestically the film will make equal (or a little higher) than what the first film made. If the sequel is amazing, then word of mouth could bring lots more money.

I voted over 220. I'm optomistic. People thought I was crazy 2 years ago when I said the 1st one would top 300 WW. I'm not affraid to step out on a limb. 200 to 220 domestic, 420 WW. This will be like X-Men 2. The breakout movie for the franchise. It looks and feels better, sharper, more colorful, and hilarious comedy moments. Add the Surfer, Dr. Doom, and who knows about the "G" man. This like the 1st one, will be the feel good movie of the summer. Don't expect dark, deep story lines, just go and have fun watching it. You want dark and deep ? Go see Batman. You want to grab your popcorn, sit back, and be entertained ? Go see FF 2.

Estimate is at 3,800 theaters at box Office Mojo

+. It will be over 4,000 by next Thursday. That's just a beginning point for the studio. Then they see how many more they can squeeze in. They have 3,800 for sure as of today. Showings will be the key. At 90 minutes they will be able to squeez a lot of showings in.

Well that doesn't explain all the Spider-Man films being rated PG13 and making more dough than any other comic book character.

Spider-Man is a known charactor. The movies rating means little. G, PG, or PG-13 it wouldn't matter. FF is not as well known. Anything they can do to get more parents to bring their kids is a good move. The more exposure the better. If it gets a PG rating it will help the exposure a lot. If more parents bring their kids, more kids will drag the parents back for a 2nd helping. This movie will be the suprise hit of the summer. Everyone will underestimate it, like they did the 1st one. Just checked the prices at my theater here. Yikes. Went up to 6.25 from 5.50 for matinee. 7.75 from 7.50 for regular showing.

I can explain that.

He's Spider-Man.

lol

Before the first film came out, Spider-Man wasnt much more famous that the F4, I think.

I hope you're right but these bug guns still worry me. O13 is getting rave reviews and it's even getting midnight showings tonight. I agree that O12 was pure crap but the shear star power has to be taken seriously. I'm still not worried one bit about Evan Almighty or the cooking rat film.

Surfs Up has a midnight showing at a theater near me, so

Spiderman was (and probably still is) the best selling super hero comic book since he's been introduced.

I don't think thats correct at all........Spider-Man had a solid following before the movie....

This has nothing to do with the topic on this thread.....take your love of Spider-Man, to the Spider-Man board.

Spider-Man has had more of a following, and before the movie was just under Superman and Batman. Since the movie, he has become #1 for the time being.

Just look at all they have done with Spider-Man before the movie (this is at the top of my head):

60's cartoon
70's TV show
80's cartoon
Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends
90's Animated Series
Spider-Man Unlimited

This doesn't include all the marketable products made from Spider-Man. Also, Spider-Man at one time had 5 books just to him, the FF never had this treatment. Less popular cartoons and stuff were done with the FF, but they weren't as popular.

Spidey has had the bigger following for a while now.

I still think this movie will be close to about 90mil opening weekend, 230+mil domestically, and 550+mil worldwide.

Considering competition for the next few weeks...I think something similar to the first film will happen....big opening, big drops. Possibly ending up around 170 million or so.

I hope this film has better legs, and it could for only one reason. Its better than the first one. People will use that to tell their friends to go see it.
