Rise of the Silver Surfer BOX OFFICE Discussion

Bottom line:

Use your prognosticating powers and tell what FF2 will make by summer's end. Also go further and tell if there will be a sequel. I'll put further pressure on you and ask if it'll be a good movie. I have faith in you.

I just have to say that if Live Free or Die Hard actually cost $110 million to make, as has been reported in some areas, then why does it seem so huge and awesome? Really makes you wonder where the money went on movies like Spider-Man 3. I mean, everyone was under contract for that movie from the beginning, so huge raises weren't a factor. And yet somehow it ends up running $250 million. Between Spidey's runaway price tag and FF's $130 million, I guess CGI really does make your budget zoom much, much higher. Die Hard only uses CGI for one sequence that I'm aware of.

1. 130 to 135 domestic, 330 to 350 WW
2. Sequel ? Yes book it. Same writer, same director
3. Better than this one.

Bonus prediction : They will show Mark Frost the negative zone, push him in, and bolt the door.

Yeah I don't see how Spidey cost so much more really.

$ 132 mil domestic and $ 325 mil worldwide is what I say. There'll probably be a sequel... or maybe Fox will make Fantastic Four vs X-Men instead.

I think it could make 135 domestically, it's going to surpass Hulk, and that's no doubt. It's tracked better than Hulk every single weekend, save opening which is the main difference between the numbers. However aftersunday and depending on estimates, ROTSS is only approx 900,000 behind Hulk at the similar point. Hulk was also pulled from theaters by Universal after week 14. Were X1 had a 16 week run, and FF1 had a 19 week run.

The drops for Fantastic Four 2 have been REALLY bad...no way to slice it...it's been more than 50% every week...I REALLY expect some leveling off this week, but nope...another 54%. I hope there is a third film to clsoe out the series, but I'm nervous as to what chance Fox will be willing to take on a third film. Please...no more Doom, and please allow a few more minutes in running time.

Fantastic Four vs X-Men. Ha. That's funny. I like a sense of humor.

I like a decisive man. I'm holding you to it. Let's booknote this post and refer back to it when the time comes.

But you have to admit it's a unique set of circumstances. As was already stated, this is the only year where there have already been 3 films to break the 300 million mark, and they were all released in the same month. There's a good chance that Transformers will also break the 300 million mark.

This is not the same set of circumstances the first film faced when it was released. It's steepest competition was against Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Wedding Crashers.

I suppose there is a chance that Fox pulls the plug, but I highly doubt it.

As I've stated numerous times, this will be the largest grossing movie this year for Fox. The Simpsons is about the only other movie of note they have slated this year, and that one will probably be successful, but I doubt it's a 100 million dollar movie.

There´s nothing that terrible about the circumstances. All those three movies had already had the biggest part of their money when FF opened. It didn´t seem to cause TF any problems. Ratatouille opened closed to it and it´s showing excellent legs at the BO.

And Fox will be crushed if these are the best numbers they can pull the whole year. The best thing that can come out of this is Tom Rothman finally getting the boot.

As I said before, I think Live Free or Die Hard will have a higher worldwide gross than FF 2. Fox also has Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium as their big November release, which has a shot to be their biggest hit of the year.

I know it was meant as a joke, but as a Marvel fan, if it were done right, a crossover could be pretty good.

Sure it would, but that would be a totally different Fantastic Four. That would really be closer to the way Fantastic Four should be. I don't know who the first to say it was but it's been repeated over how fun FF was. "The tone of FF is fun." I've heard it and heaerd it. It is fun, but that makes it seem more like Gilligan's Island when we keep describing the FF as fun and lighthearted. I always thought of the tone of Fantastic Four as drama. I mean, that's the real word that sums up Fantastic Four to me. Who had more dramatic adventures than these people?! It was Peyton Place before there was such a thing. It's really the first prime time soap opera. So there you go on that.

Sure, I'd like to see that movie. Even though we know that won't happen. Man, would the fight scenes be cool!!

GreenKToo,

Noticing your signature,....I was wondering if you'd heard the rumor about Hugo Weaving being considered for the role of Sub Mariner.

No way. Really? That could be cool. He has the face, but how about his physique? Is he buff?

Thank you. I've heard so many so called FF fans tell me the comic is "fun" until my freaking head was ready to explode. Sure it was OCCASIONALLY fun, but there was a hell of a lot more going on than just THAT.

Drama is a far better description.

He seems to be a fit individual. With the way they get actors into shape these days I bet he could do it. Back in the day they had Body by Jake getting Harrison Ford in shape for "Raiders" and that was a novelty. Now Hollywood is filled with guys who do just that it seems.

From Variety:

Fox's "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" stayed on the radar with $7.9 million at 3,055 markets for a $96.7 million cume -- in line with forecasts by Fox, which hasn't yet opened the sequel in France, Japan, South Korea or Spain. "Surfer" needs another $80 million to match the "Fantastic Four" international total.

That puts the worldwide total at $ 220.5 million.

You and I need to go run the studios; be this generation's Louis B Mayer and Jack Warner.

And I would put it to you that Star Wars was not originally skewing to a kiddie audience. I truly believe Lucas was just making a movie he wanted to see. It was'nt until later that they wrongly target little kids that the whole franchise went south. Unless you're making the Powder Puff Girls that mind set is Wrong Wrong Wrong!

Yeah, without a doubt, the copetition was heated on both ends of FF2's opening, and I have no doubt that heavily impacted the opening weekend, and following weeks potential for the movie, but as I watched Transformers, I kept thinking...WOW...what a difference those extra minutes make in a film! Had Fox allowed Story and Crew to plan and plot around a 144 min movie, rather than a 95 min short film, I HAVE to believe FF2 would have held up much better.

On the flip side, the movie is doing an incredible job overseas, and it's looking likely to top the last film with no prob, and it might actually make up the difference in the reduced domestic B.O. That's really positive, and something to encourage Fox and Story to deliver a finale with heart, soul, and length.

You know,....I remember 6, 7 years ago...something like that....when they were first talking about the FF movie...maybe not that long ago but anyway,....they mentioned at the time that they were going to do a period piece placing the FF in the '60's with an emphasis on humor and light heartedness. I was excited about the prospect of having them put in the 60's but I wasn't too sure or thrilled about the jokey part. How do things get so far off focus?
