Rise of the Silver Surfer BOX OFFICE Discussion

New updates. TF's $ 152,500,000 dom. $ 246,100,000 WW thru 7-8. FF 2 $ 220,491,000 WW thru 7-8.

And why wasn't that as well coordinated and as closely timed as Spider-Man? Is that where that inflated 550 million dollar number came from?

I don't understand the strategy. Perhaps it is a matter of a money.

You know,....I remember 6, 7 years ago...something like that....when they were first talking about the FF movie...maybe not that long ago but anyway,....they mentioned at the time that they were going to do a period piece placing the FF in the '60's with an emphasis on humor and light heartedness. I was excited about the prospect of having them put in the 60's but I wasn't too sure or thrilled about the jokey part. How do things get so far off focus?

Too many dame hands in the pot. That 1st movie script was worked on since the unreleased Corman FF. Over 10 years. That's what happened. Plus Fox are penny pinchers, and it's their money, their right. I want to say to all these people who say oh they should throw tons of money into the film, when it's your money, you can do whatever the hell u want with it. You want them to throw 265 into a FF movie, and have SR's on your hands ? Catwoman mabey ? They talk about Sony throwing 300 into Spider-Man 3, and where did it go. I want to know where did the 265 million go they Spent on SR's ? I know 20 million went to Cage. I'm sure a big hunk went in Singers pocket. He refused to do X-Men 3 because Fox would not give him what he wanted.

I'll say it again,...I would love to see the movie done in the 60's like Kirby was doing them then.
They could do some updates and incorporate some modern day thinking and problems. It could all be very cleverly disguised under the premise of retro thinking. It'd be great.

Fox's "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" stayed on the radar with $7.9 million at 3,055 markets for a $96.7 million cume -- in line with forecasts by Fox, which hasn't yet opened the sequel in France, Japan, South Korea or Spain. "Surfer" needs another $80 million to match the "Fantastic Four" international total. -Variety

Chugging along.

And what was that? To give Superman bikini briefs and make him a metrosexual from Metropolis?

1. 130 to 135 domestic, 330 to 350 WW
2. Sequel ? Yes book it. Same writer, same director
3. Better than this one.

Bonus prediction : They will show Mark Frost the negative zone, push him in, and bolt the door.

Hahahah,

Yeah I heard they are already leading him on about the hospitality of some dude called Annihilus.

Reports are that Annihilus who is rumored to be in a possible sequel is demanding an audience with Mark Frost prior to signing on.

His terse message left with Tim was; "I need to see Mark Frost before the contract is signed."

Tim did say that repeated calls as to when they could expect Mark back from the negative zone were never returned. :cwink:

Allright Carp Man,

What is Japan going to take in before all said and done?

I know 20 million went to Cage. I'm sure a big hunk went in Singers pocket. quote]

20 million went to Cage....That's obscene. Just because he didn't get to do it he gets that kind of compensation. Just obscene.

He would've gotten that much either way. It was a pay-or-play deal. Which means he gets $20 million no matter what, regardless of whether he plays the part or doesn't.

I just have to say that if Live Free or Die Hard actually cost $110 million to make, as has been reported in some areas, then why does it seem so huge and awesome? Really makes you wonder where the money went on movies like Spider-Man 3. I mean, everyone was under contract for that movie from the beginning, so huge raises weren't a factor. And yet somehow it ends up running $250 million. Between Spidey's runaway price tag and FF's $130 million, I guess CGI really does make your budget zoom much, much higher. Die Hard only uses CGI for one sequence that I'm aware of.

Also look at how much TF was said to have cost. 150 million. Where in the world did Sony spend 250 million at for SM3?? Also where did WB spend 200 plus mil on SR? TF's fx looked incrediable and was way better then SM3, and Superman Returns fx looked great, on par with TF. Both SR and TF looked aboutthe same budget wise, but you also have to add that SR cast pay was cheaper then TF.

The SFx for Transformer is easier to do then for SM3...I think. Making Realistic Human CGI is the hardest, whereas stuff like Robots, or event Cars and what not are easier. I'm not saying that would be a ton of money saved, but it's some of it...another is pay and compensation for Tobey and crew...Transformers had a bunch of little know to slightly before know stars...heck Tyrese was one of the biggest names in the film. So that saved a chunk of change as well, so Transformer cost will invariably go up up up for any sequels. Overall, Transformers had to be one of the surpirse hits of the season, because 6-8 months ago, it wasn't getting alot of love.

I think the 1st one took in 9 million, so i'll go conservative and say...

8 million.

Sequels usually perform stronger overseas in the seconf frame...I don't think it's from repeat customers, jsut new one, who didn't see the first, but are more fimiliar with the product now. I think FF2 does about $12-15 in Japan, if not better. Also, Carp post about 18 more to go, but several of those are the biggest markets.

So Carp What do ya say to This ?

TRANSFORMERS :trans:
$152,500,000 - Domestic as of july 8th 2007
$246,100,000 - Worldwide

I have stated I am not surprised, and expected it. I figured it would have close to 200 domestic by the time HP opened. When HP opens then well see. I will be watching the 9 days after HP opens, then we will see what legs it has. If it can hold against HP, and what else is out there then I will be surprised. Right now no surprise.

Situations like these are the reasons why I have never voted on polls like this BEFORE a movie opens. I always end up looking stupid, and so it is the case here. These drops are terrible. What happened???? :csad:

Hey. I voted 220 or more. It's no biggie. I'm not affraid of being wrong. My guess is no better or worse than anyone elses. It's a guess, and I felt this movie would soar. But that's the way it goes. As to why ? I think a lot of it had to do with a leftover bad taste from the 1st movie. It has had good word of mouth. I thought it would overcome the 1st, but apparently not. Allthought it is doing good, and will not be a bomb by any definition of the word, it is a disapointment. Not the movie, but the box office performance.

I realize that. It's still obscene. Pay-or-play. Give me a break. I know a musician-slash-school teacher who needs that money more than Nicholas Cage.

I read an article in the Chicago paper over the weekend, and it doesn't even mention Fantastic Four, that was about the drops in all movies past the opening weeks this summer. Heck, I went to see POTC: Dead Man's Chest on Labor Day weekend and the theater was still pretty full.

One movie that is doing steady business is a surprise hit, sort of like "The Wedding Crashers", is "Knocked Up" . As for Transformers, I am not surprised at the box office. It plays to that group of males who either grew up with the toys or love to play video games hours on end ... and I fall into neither group ergo have no real interest in it.

Give him a break.... he needs the cash to buy back all those comic books Lisa Presley made him sell when they got hitched...:woot:

It's all a guessing game. I voted 175, because I thought it had a legit shot at the no. 1 spot for 2 weeks.

I got nervous when I started noticing at Target and Wallmart there were no FF toys in the store, like there were for Spider-man and Transformers. At Burger King the promotion was barely noticable, compared to their promotion for Spidey. Heck even comparing to the promotion they did for the first movie.

Then when the movie opened at only 58 mill for the weekend, I pretty much knew it would fall short of the original with the competition in line.

Fox just did an all around lousy job of promoting and producing this movie. Ironically it will be their biggest money earner of the year.
