Rise of the Silver Surfer BOX OFFICE Discussion

Quote your source. BB did more than FF domestically, where the studio gets a bigger share than overseas, and BB also sold better on DVD.

Didn't BB have a like 200 mil budget due to the sets?

I think I remember hearing that somewhere.

It was 150m. TDK is apparently going to cost more, which is good indication that it was VERY profitable for the studio.

That's what I read, too. I don't see how that's possible but we'll find out sooner or later. I doubt it would be more than 165.
A lot of money went into set construction and building the Batmobile on Batman Begins. They can re-use a lot of that and save money that way.

But didn't they make more of them this time. Plus, the Bat-pod. New and old costume. I wonder what they did to make the BB costume fit now that Bale isn't as big as he was?

They built about a half-dozen cars on the first one, so I don't know if they'd need to build more this time around. The bike would be a lot cheaper to build than the car. It's conceivable that re-using some of the first film's production values could save $ 15-20 million for the sequel.

Hell, by that measure Elektra 2 should be right around the corner.

Don't forget about Howard the Duck 2...that's gotta be WAY in the black by now...lol.

Studios want their money short term...3-5 years, since they have investors who want ROI...not recouped profits in 10 years. Fantastic Four 2, like SR are not failures, but they are disappoinments, because of the potential. In the case of FF2, because the first movie did so well, and Fox probably hoped for another X2 like performance...thing is, they didn't provided the level of support, like they did for X2. The movie saw increases in budget $75 ---> $125, and running time...plus it wasn't in a crowd. SR carried ALOT of expectation...Spider-Man like expectations, and TW-AOL invested like they expected those results...$391 isn't cutting it...no way to slice that. Overall, I think FF3 gets greenlight and shootign before Superman Next, but that's a personality driven delay, since Singer got an ego, and the very sizable budget cut is a clear sign of the studio's displeasure...how is he going to take that? They are also going to curtail his creative control, so how is he going to TAKE THAT? Transformers, on the other hand, has opened pandora's box to Saturday morning cartoons (And after school) from yester-year. I'm sure there are going to be alot of bombs coming soon, that will not delvier the level of creativity and action as TF.

Masters of the Universe, G.I. Joe, and Thundercats are all in development. I expect they'll get greenlights a lot easier now given TF's success.

as far as this "fact" that FF made more money for Fox than BB did for WB...

Batman Begins:
Total US Gross $205,343,774
International Gross $166,480,873
Worldwide Gross $371,824,647

Production Budget $150,000,000
US TV Rights (FX, AMC, June 2005): $25,000,000

Fantastic Four:
Theatrical Performance
Total US Gross $154,695,569
International Gross $174,800,000
Worldwide Gross $329,495,569

Production Budget $87,500,000
Ad Budget (Nielsen): $35,200,000

and this doesn't include satellite numbers such as DVD sales, merchandising, etc.

Those numbers go to different divisions anyway. Kinda like the "TV sales" number - it's irrelevant.

And I thought the first FF had a budget of 100 mil?

Oh well. My guess is that the films probably made about equivalent amounts for their parent companies, but look for Dark Knight to outdo BB and both FF films easily.

it doesn't matter if they go to different divisions, they go to the same company.

"It's a fact that Fantastic Four 1 made more money for Fox then BB did for the WB."

money includes all avenues of income, regardless of what division is responsible for accruing it, and that includes DVD sales and merchandising.

Ah, right, I see what you're arguing. Sorry, I shouldn't get involved in debates that aren't my own. :p

Mondays #'s are in. FF 2. $ 124,428,058 domestic. $ 206,928,581 WW. TF's $ 165,333,052 domestic. $ 262,541,048. All #'s thru 7-9. Today is the last day for TF's hurrah. HP opens tomorrow. Big drop from Sunday. 55.2 %. Up 12.8 % over last Monday. I'll be keeping watch over the next 7 days. $ 155,405,412 7 days counting last Monday. We'll see if it has any legs at all. If it does not have a 60 % drop or more over the next 7 days, I'll be surprised. Hp will suck the life out of it.

This discussion needs to take place ELSEWHERE, not here. Move the conversation elsewhere, or I will do it for you.

according to this, neither F4 3 or a superman sequel is certain yet.

Yeah I pretty much knew the Superman movie was in limbo, which is exactly why Superman Returns was a complete failure.

Maybe there will be no FF3, but the fact is the first film, as troubled as it was warrented a sequel, which was made. Superman Returns may not even get that.

In any case the most disturbing news out of that article is we are stuck with X3 being the end of the X-men franchise. What does Fox care? They made their money, but the fans are not happy with how that ended.

yeah, it seeme we fans always get scr##ed.

We spoke of Richard Donner a page or two ago.....I just saw a 1961 episode of the Rifleman directed by a young Richard Donner....didn't know he'd been in the business that long. Wow.

Here's a movie that no one's been talking about..... what the next Bourne movie is going to do the movie box office horizon. What's the speculation on that?

I like the phrase "major cost cuts" before they will approve a sequel to SR. over 300 with marketing, and you make 201. That won't make Singer happy. He won't have cart blanch for a sequel. I wounder where he'll go from here ? The're willing to go 175 ? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Not that far away from 209.
