Rise of the Silver Surfer BOX OFFICE Discussion

I saw Harry Potter at the IMAX last night. Our show was sold out and we were already waiting on line at 6:00 to get in because it was already crowded. The 11:00 show waiting to get in when we left was sold out, and the 3am show that followed was also sold out. :wow:

So yeah...I think it's doing well. :oldrazz:

And it was terrific, I think it was the best of the HP movies so far.

Yeah...the midnight shows for my area were sold out last week....and most of the showings for today are sold out already....

Whoa....... the giant robots took a dive when the boy wizard showed up. Have to admit Carp was right. I think that is because you have a wider audience appeal with "Harry Potter" than with "Transformers" ... more females and a lot more adults in the mix.

Definitely.
I only know HP from sitting through the second film, but it doesn't take a genius to that the books and films have incredible across-the-board appeal appeal.

Sharp declines ahead for almost every other summer movie that's open.

Yep, Harry Potter will probably rule the summer box office. It has wide universal appeal and I will be checking it out this evening at the IMAX. I am glad that Fox did not release FF2 on July 4th cause then we would have had to deal with Transformers and HP and the box office probably would have been considerably less. Still hoping for a strong WW box office showing when it opens in the remaining markets.

I'm not surprised at all with what HP has done.....OMG....that is all many of my students can talk about.....if they finish up their work early I allow them to read......and what do they pull out more often than anyother book?

ya guessed it......they have been talking this movie since the first day of school.....LAST YEAR....

Yeah, Potter is huge and has a wide appeal. I am a fan of the movies (never read the books), so they got me also.

Well ya know what.....more power to the single mom.......GOOD FOR HER......

Not really... considering it made just over a million more the previous day.

Like i said yesterday i have no idea why Potter is so popular but the numbers are very impressive and i will see it on DVD like the other 4

Nevertheless, expect "Transformers" to follow the pattern of dropping around 60 percent this weekend.

It's nose dive city for the robots. It has no legs. It has no appeal to the general audience. HP will take over the box office, and the robots will be a distant memory soon. This is one time I'm glad I was right. Oh and Hunter, HP appeals to all groups. Kids, teens, parents. TF's appeals to the fanboys only. It was a no brainer.

. Oh and Hunter, HP appeals to all groups. Kids, teens, parents. TF's appeals to the fanboys.

Errr that had nothing at all to do with what i said:huh: and TF just like Spidey and Indy etc appeals to a lot more than fanboys hence the massive numbers

It may, or may not. We'll have to see. But a 60% drop off would not kill the movie -*cough*fantasticfour2*cough*- as it's already at $180+ million.

I wish I had a buzzer for this, because you're wrong. Again.

a.) $180+ million before it hit it's second weekend. Obviously, there is appeal for the mass here.

b.) Again, $180+ million. Hardly a distant memory.

c.) Fanboys do not make up the mass amount of money this movie has made so far.

The movie by no means is a bust, and there will be a sequel. No doubting that. But those who were saying it's the movie of the year, box office champ of the summer, it will make 300 domestic, ect, ect. It has had it's day in the sun, now it's back to reality. I don't care how much FF 2 made. That's for bean counters. It's movie of the year in my book, and that's all that matters. If it appealed to the masses, the #'s would not be dropping like they are. It has no appeal. None, zero, nada. I'll be keeping a watch.

Well, when I said I thought TF would make 225-250 mil domestic you went into one of your "what are you smoking" rants - and it's definitely going to go over 225.

Guys go and find a brick wall and start head butting it b/c seriously you'll get more productive use out of that than trying to talk sense with Carpster.

The numbers are dropping, but so are the ones for every other movie in the top ten. Even Ratatouille dropped 61% compared to last Wednesday due to Harry Potter. LFoDH dropped 71% from last week.

wow, other movies #'s drop when a well known franchise, that has proven itself 4x....has come out.....

I'm so surprised...
*insert sarcasm please*....

Wednesdays #'s are in. FF 2 $ 125,271,803 dom. $ 223,286,275 WW. TF's $ 180,589,886 dom. $ 277,797,882 WW. HP $ 44,232,338 dom. $ 73,432,338 WW. All #'s thru 7-11. Wow. $ 44.2 million in 1 day. :wow: I won't comment.

WEDNESDAY ESTIMATE: 'Harry Potter' in the stratosphere! 'HP5' w/$44.3M; All-time biggest Wednesday in movie history!; 5-day target of $128M and Fri-Sun of $76M!
by Steve Mason

THURSDAY MORNING: As I forecast last night, Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix (Warner Bros) is the new all-time Wednesday box office champion, topping Spider-Man 2's $40.4M. The opening day estimate, however, sailed pst my target range of $39M-$42M. HP5 is in the stratosphere with a breathtaking estimted $44.3M to start its domestic run.

Harry's record-breaking day started off Tuesday night/Wednesday morning at 12:01a with a staggering $12M. That's double the take midnight take for 2005's Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire. Then it was sellouts and near-capacity houses all day long. Here are the top 5 Wednesdays in modern box office history.

ALL-TIME TOP 5 WEDNESDAY BOX OFFICE PERFORMANCES
1. Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix - $44.3M (estimate)
2. Spider-Man 2 - $40.4M
3. Transformers - $29M
4. Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace - $28.5M
5. The Passion of the Christ - $26.5M

ALL-TIME TOP 5 HARRY POTTER DAYS
1. 07/11/07 - Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix - $44.3M (estimate)
2. 12/18/05 - Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire - $40.1M
3. 06/04/04 - Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban - $38.2M
4. 12/19/05 - Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire - $36.7M
5. 11/15/02 - Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets - $34.2M

Note : HP is a beast May be # 1 all around by years end..

And I have no idea why TF's has done so well. I'd rather see HP then TF's. I've seen war of the worlds once. Once was enough. It's a shame Hunter you never had a childhood. Why is HP popular, why are comic book movies so popular ? Questions you would not need to ask, if you had had a childhood. Those kind of things are popular with kids. Fantacy, role playing, adventure, excitment, the unknown. All things kids love. That's the main reason they are popular.

Agree Carpy. I personally love HP. Great to seeing it to good numbers. Oh and I thought TF was good too. As for Box office, WW Pirates and HP will definitely be the top two. No clue where Fantastic 4 will place lol.

Before anyone accuses me of trashing the franchise, let me just say I really enjoyed Transformers.

However, the 70% drop may be the best thing for more Fantastic Four movies in the future. We are ovbiously looking at a 60% drop for Transformers, if not more, so Fox will be forced with the fact that the drop from Fantastic Four is an industry wide problem, and not something that can be pinned solely on the movie itself.

The three movies all over 300 million so far, two had drop offs of 61.5% and the other 56.4%, if Tranformers follows suit, then it's more than just a conincidence it's a trend.

You look at record high gas prices, home forclosures at an all time high, that's going to have an effect somewhere, although the amazing thing in the overall box office is much better than it was two years ago.

I think the main point is that people are not going to repeat viewings of movies this summer. I don't know how you'd get the statistical data, but I'd say the number of people who only see a movie once at the theater and wait for the DVD for multiple viewings is at an all time high.

Another factor is the number of new high profile movies out this summer just seems like more than I can remember since 2003.

The only movies so far that have had "legs" have been Ratatouille, Die Hard and Knocked Up. I may have missed one or two but that's about it.

On the filp side, there have been very few flops. Evan Almighty, Surfs Up and Nancy Drew would be the only ones I could think of.

In any case I think that in light of everything else this movie has actually been pretty successful in light of everything else. We knew this isn't a 200 + million dollar frachise, but it ranks a solid 3 as far as success among the Marvel franchises, and that ain't bad.
