Rise of the Silver Surfer BOX OFFICE Discussion

Wonder what DVD sales will do for it. Visually, there's a lot more for people to want a DVD of the movie.

I don't ever hear those numbers being factored in to a movies success (guess there's some sort of rule about it) but I'm sure they made big with the last movie on home theaters.

I think DVD sales will do very well. It may be people are taking the I'll wait and rent or buy the DVD route.

Before anyone accuses me of trashing the franchise, let me just say I really enjoyed Transformers.

However, the 70% drop may be the best thing for more Fantastic Four movies in the future. We are ovbiously looking at a 60% drop for Transformers, if not more, so Fox will be forced with the fact that the drop from Fantastic Four is an industry wide problem, and not something that can be pinned solely on the movie itself.

The three movies all over 300 million so far, two had drop offs of 61.5% and the other 56.4%, if Tranformers follows suit, then it's more than just a conincidence it's a trend.

You look at record high gas prices, home forclosures at an all time high, that's going to have an effect somewhere, although the amazing thing in the overall box office is much better than it was two years ago.

I think the main point is that people are not going to repeat viewings of movies this summer. I don't know how you'd get the statistical data, but I'd say the number of people who only see a movie once at the theater and wait for the DVD for multiple viewings is at an all time high.

Another factor is the number of new high profile movies out this summer just seems like more than I can remember since 2003.

The only movies so far that have had "legs" have been Ratatouille, Die Hard and Knocked Up. I may have missed one or two but that's about it.

On the filp side, there have been very few flops. Evan Almighty, Surfs Up and Nancy Drew would be the only ones I could think of.

In any case I think that in light of everything else this movie has actually been pretty successful in light of everything else. We knew this isn't a 200 + million dollar frachise, but it ranks a solid 3 as far as success among the Marvel franchises, and that ain't bad.

I think as much as everyone says no the economy does't play a part. Yes it plays a part. With energy cost going up, gas going up, theater tickets going up, concession prices going up, it is a factor. Many industries are feeling the pinch. Hotels, restaurants, ect, ect. Many of the parents with kids, do not have the resources to see a movie as many times as in the past. Ok Johnny we'll go see HP once, Spder-Man once ect, ect. but we'll wait for the DVD to see it again. So there is a part of the reason for the boxoffice 2nd weekend sales slump. Hell you can get a movie from Netflex, or go down to the video store and rent it or 3 bucks, or buy it for 15 dollars. That's a hell of a lot cheeper then taking a family of 4 to the movie theater once.

And I have no idea why TF's has done so well. I'd rather see HP then TF's. I've seen war of the worlds once. Once was enough. It's a shame Hunter you never had a childhood. Why is HP popular, why are comic book movies so popular ? Questions you would not need to ask, if you had had a childhood. Those kind of things are popular with kids. Fantacy, role playing, adventure, excitment, the unknown. All things kids love. That's the main reason they are popular.

You re-quoted the same post b/c you missed the point the first time,oh Carpster this is like remedial school.......Now think it over again and work it out nice and slowly...i grew up on Indy,Bond and Star Wars,i had my childhood thanks....all i said was i don't get the popularity of a pre pubescent boy as the hero capiche ? I quite understand ppl like him and that is fine,y'know b/c with me being an adult(unlike you) i appreciate ppl like other things

TF's is a big part of my childhood. I'm a 80's kid. I grew up on the cartoon and other 80's stuff.

So seeing something like this from my childhood made me feel like a kid again, especally when Optimus says "Autobots Roll Out"

Update your #'s. Post 4227.

If Transformers has the mega drop, it makes all the other movies of the summer look good. We won't look at the 60% drops the same way, as it shows a trend in society as opposed to reaction.

The realist in me questions a 60% drop on that movie.

On Transformers?

If Potter keeps up his momentum, it is going to happen.

Potter has quite the following, but I really don't see Transformers dropping off of the map like that. It has a great word-of-mouth backing it up, whereas a stateside release is meeting both a side of Americans who love the films and another side who hate everything Potter-related.

People who hate Potter won't neccessarily see Transformers...they may just not go to the movies and skip Potter.

I went to see Transformers to see what all the big "hoo hoo" was....

I haven't seen any of the HP movies.....I have seen parts of all of them, but none of them in full.

Potter has mother****ers dressing up as the characters and going to the movie. I think it will have the edge overall this summer.

What did you think of Transformers. I really liked it, but I feel it is flawed.

Well............hmmmmmmmmmmmmm......coming from someone (not sure how many of us were in the audience) but one who didn't know what a Transformer was until I found out they were releasing the same date as FF 2........and not a big fan of Bayblowup****.....I may not be the best to critique this movie....lmao

Actually, for general audience reaction and not Transformers fans, you may be perfect :D

I can imagine Transformers and Harry Potter will both be successfull, and duke it out.

As for FF2`s numbers, will it make more or less than the first film?Because i remember Carp Man putting up numbers that had the first FF film with 300 million, and FF2 only has around 200 million.

Well....ok

Positives......Josh Duhamel, and Tyrese Gibson..........

IMO, it was ok, a lot of blowumups....and I'm not too much for that unless the actors are doing the slamming, and doing their own stunts...I get off on that kind of thing....machines fighting each other was meh' for me.....but it kept my attention.....the big Transformers were kind of meh as far as scaring me....but those little ****s scared the crap outta me....

Negatives.......too long, too much Fox, not enough Duhamel and Gibson......:yay:
