Rise of the Silver Surfer BOX OFFICE Discussion

I'm no expert, but I don't think there's the slightest doubt that Harry Potter will beat Transformers domestically.

I think Harry Potter has a legit chance of being the highest grossing film of the year. However, seems like all these big films are having big week 2 drops, so we'll have to wait and see.

Looks like G.L. was right on the money concerning T.F. drop, if the 3 day estimates are correct that is.

I just want to take a moment to laugh at your "Transformers has no legs, it's dead" predictions as it drops considerably less than what you were so sure it would do....

....:trans::oldrazz:

.... okay I'm done laughing. Would you like me to stop by again when it becomes obvious that Harry Potter will not beat Transformers domestically?

Well I did not allow for the overflow from HP showings being sold out. Oops. :oldrazz: to you. You clowns amaze me, you think you're going to embarass me, or make me feel bad. The jokes on you. Have a nice day. :word: If you had bothered to read the whole thing, I did say 30 tops. I was off by a few million. I thought it would be no less then 60 %. HP not beat Transformers domestic ? Now it is my turn to laugh. HP is allready $ 26 ahead of TF's for 2 days. Are you and GL, and all the others hitting off the same bong ? That's unsanitary you know. You don't know where everyone elses lips have been, or mabey you do. :wow: So stop by anytime.

No, Carp, you've had the bong all to yourself. Your assertion that a prediction of 225-250 for TF was way too high makes that plain, as does the fact that you're now hallucinating that I said TF would gross more than HP 5 - something I've never said. It's time to sell one of your mint condition FF comics and use the money for rehab.

Nah, you've done a pretty good job of doing that yourself. :oldrazz:

Considering the fact that Potter had two full days, while Transformers had one day and an extra few hours from Monday, that comparison really isn't fair.

2 days are 2 days. Allthough Mojo does not count the 2nd as a day, I do. If you did not count it, then you would have to take that $ 8.8 Monday off in which case HP is still $ 13 million ahead, after 2 FULL days. And that was a holiday week, so HP's #'s look even better. So face reality. It will not make the 300 everyone was predicting. It will not be the box office winner of the summer, or year as some were predicting. Everybody got caught up in the hype. Now reality is setting in.

Wow he's long winded! Both films are doing (and will finish) well but I don't need to list the reasons why Potter won't beat Transformers.
However, because you so eloquently said I could stop by anytime, I gladly will after it becomes obvious Potter won't beat Transformers domestically. I'll put my clown suit on too and I'll make sure to take another huge hit off my bong. Then we can all laugh over the unending posts where you say Transformers will have zero legs, Potter will crush it, Transformers won't have a sequel, all the other looney comments you've made, and all the excuses you'll have for why Potter didn't outperform TF here in the U.S.

See ya soon!

Considering that Transformers movie - which is in it's first time out - made almost as much as the fifth Harry Potter blockbuster in it's first couple days... well, you do the math and you'll see which number is more impressive.

So face reality. It will not make the 300 everyone was predicting. It will not be the box office winner of the summer, or year as some were predicting. Everybody got caught up in the hype. Now reality is setting in.

This coming from the same person who said Transformers had no appeal to anyone other than fanboys...

Jeez, the collapse of FF 2's weekday numbers this week has been really bad. $ 287,315 on Thursday is a lousy launching pad for the weekend; it sets the stage for a collapse this weekend. We're probably looking at a 65-70% drop, which would be wretched for a film in its fifth weekend.

If there's a sequel it's going to be on the back of foreign box office, but this domestic dropoff pattern has to give Fox pause about making FF 3.

Exactly.....

The biggest start to Harry Potter ever! Exactly like Pirates 3, Shrek 3, and Spiderman 3!!!! WOW!!! But I forgot, what happened to all those movies after their record setting starts? Don't worry there old man I'm not hiding anywhere; I do have a life outside superherohype.com. In the meantime, there's still plenty of time for you to come up with more quotables that we can all chuckle over in a month or two.

Your's truly,

The clown with a bong.

Friday estimates from BOM:

1. HP 5 - $ 26.2 mil ($ 88.8 mil)
2. TF - $ 10.9 mil ($ 197.9 mil)

12. FF 2 - $ 435,000 ($ 125.994 mil)

TF will likely have a drop of just above or just below 50%. FF 2's weekend drop will likely be 66-68%.

No way will it be below 50%, I don't see huge moves for Transformers on Saturday, I think it will probably end up in the 32-33 million range, meaning an above 50% drop, although better than I predicted seeing how poorly it did durring the week.

As far as FF, now I'm not sure it will make 130 million domestically. It's really and enigma, on why it did that poorly.

Just saw HP5 and WOW...i've gotta say, it WAS the most exciting film I've seen in this crowded summer. HP5 has a MAJOR help/hinderance, since the book comes out, and if people walk away loving it...that'll just spur them to watch the film, and help with the drops...TF suffered as expected, but it's a good film, and will probably sniff $270-ish range, and maybe even $300, which would be awesome. The problem is heavy upcoming competition from the younger audience in Chuck & Larry, then Simpson movie. I think this competition will hurt Transformer more than HP5, but we'll see....Oh Hairspray might also hit the movie as well..be that one is a headscratcher.

Oh...FF2...Bad year to launch...at least, bad time of the year...competition was just too fierce.

150 million dollar budget........it made that back in about 5 days.

How is not a success? How did it not live up to the BO hype?

Carp....some battles are best left as is. This is one you can't win.

That would only be an internal multiplier of 2.9 or 3.0, which would be on the low side for a second weekend. I think it'll get more of a regular second weekend IM of around 3.3. But we'll see.

Actualy it was 7 days. HP also cost 150, and will make that back by the time you add in Mondays total, for 6 days. Did I ever say it was not a suscess ? It can't be anything else but.
