My recent thoughts on OMD/BND...although it is a current thing...BND is kinda an old subject...lol...
I have not been a fan of "arcs" for quite along time before OMD and BND came along. I am not a fan of them in general at all for the entire comic medium, let alone this new system of "BND 3X: OMD Continues".
Some fans may be collecting certain arcs for the creative teams. It totally throws off the (decreasing) numbers either way.
The arcs create a break-up in the flow and increase errors or inconsistencies.
Worse yet, when re-reading them, like all those big X-men events collected in TPB that I own, it (the art changes) are more noticable in TPB form.
I know i talk alot about the good old days, but i really liked the good old days, when you had the twelve issues and an annual. Sure, sometimes you had some crappy spots in history where the comics weren't as good as other times, but overall you had the consistency in running themes, art, writing, plots, etc, because you had the same writer and artists working together with a shared direction/ideas.
Sure, it was brilliant to bring in big names for all these arcs to keep up sales while experimenting with devisive storylines and agendas....yet, i can't help feeling sad and wondering how good it would be right now, with just Slott, let's say, 1x a month, writing a normal spidey who is within continuity and not forced into the "single and dopey-dumb" box.
Spidey has a rich history and giant pool of supporting cast....now it is ignored and their minds all wiped cleaned by the devil. I cant' help but wonder how much higher the sales numbers would have been if we hadn't gone the Satan route, agenda route, and instead embraced Spidey's rich history and progressed the character instead of turning him into Petey Pan, that 70's hip guy, who never grew up.
All Joe gave us was poor excuses, such as his writers couldn't write a married spidey. However, a good writer who is worth his weight can write anyone, real or fake, black or white, bald or hairy, married or single. I am tired of hearing silly excuses. This is nothing that couldn't be done with a married spidey, and i dare say the sotries would be better too, if marriage were involved. Instead, we have reminders of devil dealing and winks and nods to whether or not MJ (who is in the bed of another man) still knows she is married or not. Doh!
We've got some great characters now, who many have grown up with, like me, who are ever to be associated with Satan now sadly. Pete and MJ=Satan. Aunt May is alive, due to Satan. Harry alive again=Satan. A mindwiped altered time/world = Satan. Doh! Does the average fan WANT to associate the devil and these guys? Sheesh. I doubt it.
I am glad some can forget or shrug it off, but it's honestly annoying to say the least. However, the whole concept here and world now is based off of Satan and the changes he made while dealing with the married couple and making Aunt May LIVE AGAIN!! (lightning crackles!!)
Amazing is really an Ultimate Spidey comic now, except the original Ultimate Spidey is really much better done than this new alternate ultimate one.
Lastly, I might add, that I wonder if Joe went with the cheesy devil route because he was so unsure of his controversial approach here that he went with a route that leaves the door, WIDEST OPEN for a way out. Everyone knows the devil's deals always backfire at some point. However, this is meant to be a big change, so IF it does stick, we've got a whole new world created by the devil, which isn't too appealing, so the ROUTE here is heavily FLAWED EITHER WAY.
