Universal Pictures is developing a remake of Drop Dead Fred for Russell Brand to star in, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Dennis McNicholas (upcoming Land of the Lost) will write the remake. Marc Platt is producing via his studio-based Marc Platt Productions along with Working Title's Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner.

The 1991 original starred Phoebe Cates as a wallflower who loses her job and husband during the course of a lunch hour. Forced to live back home, she's reunited with her childhood imaginary friend (Brit actor Rik Mayall), who promises to help but causes more havoc.

The trade says the take for the update is to make a film in the tone of Beetlejuice, building a universe around the concept of imaginary friends. Brand would play the trouble-making pal.

Ugghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh f**king terrible :csad:
And have we sunk so low we are now re-making films from the 90's?

Why....in Gods name.....would they remake Drop Dead Fred? Better question, why would they have made Drop Dead Fred in the first place?

Why? Its not like this was some huge hit with a large audience.

Hollywood producers are really digging at the bottom of the barrel.

Dude, it was a funny movie. Thats why. That and Rik Mayall is a genius. :woot:

It seems Hollywood finally gets it. Remake bad movies not the good ones. I certainly hope this now becomes a trend, so that they can stop reaping my childhood!

Hollywood doesn't get it because a day ago, they announced Videodome: the remake.

so... they're remaking 2 movies?

DDF was one of my fav childhood movies, remakes are awesome,. i hope they do good on it.

I'll never understand the concept of *****ing about a remake and saying it's going to ''ruin" the original film if it's bad. No, no it's not. The only thing it'll ruin is itself, that good old original you adore so much? It's still there...untouched, still just as good as the first time you watched it. No remake (essentially another filmed version or take on said film) is gonna ''ruin" the original film.

It's not like they are going back pulling that old film out of storage, filming new scenes to place DIRECTLY into it, then re-releasing it with new scenes. THEN, then, it would be ''ruining" that classic film, then and only then. Otherwise, remakes don't touch the film's they are adapted from.

remember when Hollywood had new ideas those where the days

Dude your still getting new stuff, just a few remakes a yr to go along with it, who cares?. Who doesn't want to have 2 diff versions of thier fav movies?. I love remakes. I love seeing different interpretations & visions. makes me love ciname all the more. Truth is, there is no original material anymore, everything's already been done, what else is there?. I dare anyone here to write something so original that they don't borrow formula from any movie before. You couldn't. get over it.

You know what? I don't care. I'm sure somebody will go see it. I mean hey, somebody watches Granny Porn. Theres a market for everybody.

I liked this movie when I was a kid. I doubt its still funny.

I grew up with this film and enjoyed it very much, it'd be interesting to see what is done with it. I wonder if Brand will sport the ginger hair or will leave his knotty rug the way it is?

I also wonder can Brand be more annoying as Fred?

Have to admit having seen the original when I was a kid Russell Brand is a damn good pick for the character.

Highly doubt I'll be seeing this though.

how can you remake a classic like this?

What a very odd movie to remake.

I could see Russell Brand being a funny Fred. I LOVED Drop Dead Fred as a kid. It was so amusing to watch. But I'm not attached to the film with nuts and bolts nowadays, and I am a fan of Russell Brand, so I'll wait on this and see how it goes.

It's an odd choice. DDF wasn't a big success film and it's really fallen off people's radar (unless, you're like us and remember the film and enjoy it). They prolly hope that nobody will remember the original film and imagin this as a NEW thing.

And with "Arthur" going ahead, isn't Brand afraid of becoming the "re-make" king?

Russell Brand doesn't mind. He just wants to be seen and known, that's all that matters. A project is a project. I listened to him give an interview on Howard Stern a while back and he seems pretty cool when given the chance. His humor is a bit out there, but he's British so what do you expect? He has wild hair and wears tight fitted clothes and looks strange.

Really, check out his old stand up routines, he's funny. As far as being in the films he's been in, he's just taking it job by job, anything is better than nothing when you consider that his break out in to US attention was the MTV music awards (and that was terrible because the Producers kept cutting his jokes and changing things on the spot).

But I really could see him as a creative and funny Fred. He basicly doesn't have to act that much as just be Russell.
