Brave and the Bold Casting Thread

Gunn probably thought off Brosnahan for the same reason most of us did. He watched The Marvelous Mrs Maisel.

I could see Bill Skarsgard as Batman, he’s kinda weird looking but I could kinda see it.

I still think Bat-Patriarch isn’t a sure thing. Damian can be the first Robin. Plus if this happens at all, we have probably a few more years for whoever to be more older and less younger.

I kinda feel that Bill Skarsgard has the sort of presence/face where even 5 years from now he's still gonna read as young, like Andrew Garfield or Michael Imperioli 20 years ago. And Bat-Patriarch seems like a very sure thing for me seeing how Gunn already explicitly stated the movie is gonna introduce characters from the "extended Bat-Family" (which makes it sound like there are a ton of them) and already teased Nightwing will appear. Not to mention I can't imagine he'd skip over Jason too with how much dramatic potential he has.

Thing is I don't think that early 30 year olds are /completely/ off the table. It'd just have to be one with a mature presence about them like what Christian Bale had when he played Batman where even in his Begins days it'd be easy to buy him as a patriarch, or what Fassbender had when he did First Class. But there's a real lack of them in the current generation and what little there are with that look don't seem to be particularly good actors or good fits.

Here's the thing though: Lots of these guys are early in their careers and haven't been given great material to work with. It's extremely common for actors to seem underwhelming in their early career until they're given the role for them and find their niche.

I mean yeah but they usually at least have /something/, at least some show or movie where they did a remarkably good job or that shows why they'd be great as Batman. Pattinson had it, Bale had it, Kilmer had it. I can't really find that with this current generation. I mean you look at these guys:

"Leo Suter: September 26, 1993. (29 now) Will be 31-32 when filming. 6'0
Alexander Ludwig: May 7, 1992 (31 now) Will be 33-34 when filming. 6'2
Colin Woodell: December 20, 1991. (31 now) Will be 33-34 when filming. 6'0
Tom Brittney: October 26, 1990. (32 now) Will be 34-35 when filming. 6'2
Michele Morrone: October 3rd, 1990. (32 now) Will be 34-35 when filming. 6'2
Brandon Sklenar: June 26th, 1990. (33 now) Will be 34-35 when filming. 6'2
Jack Lowden: June 2nd, 1990. (33 now) Will be 35-36 when filming. 6'0
Liam Hemsworth: January 13th, 1990. (33 now) Will be 35-36 when filming. 6'3
Tom Bateman: March 15, 1989 (34 now) Will be 35-36 when filming. 6'2 "

And you'd be really hard pressed to find anything that makes them perfect picks. And some like Tom Bateman are just terrible.

I mean, that's because you chose actors that don't fit Batman. I could do that in 2005 too. Ashton Kutcher. Hayden Christensen. Ryan Reynolds. Easy.

True but 2005 also had Christian Bale, Jake Gyllenhaal, Eric Bana, Josh Hartnett, Michael Fassbender, etc existing as late 20-late 30s something actors. Where's this generation's Bale, Gyllenhaal, Bana, Fassbender or Hartnett?

You would HATE Hartnett back then dude. He is the ultimate example of what Sword was talking about. Fassbender's biggest role was a minor character in Band of Brothers. Eric Bana was almost 40.

Austin Butler, Jacob Elordi, Bill Skarsgard, Aaron Taylor Johnson, Jack O'Connell, Alden Ehrenreich, George MacKay, that's just the white guys, or not snatched up in a DC role like Pattinson, Keoghan or Hoult. Open it up and you have Daniel Kayuluua, Dev Patel, Riz Ahmed, John Boyega, etc. You can totally create an equal list of candidates for a current day Begins.

Gunn would never do something this bullsy but apart from maybe Dev Patel the best possible POC casting for Batman would be Steven Yeun. I think he'd be ****ing unreal.

O'Connell was my choice early on in The Batman days, he was such an incredibly specific rumour that I wonder if he actually was on a shortlist. For as much as I go to bat (har har) for Hoult he'd still have been my ideal second choice if Pattinson had said no.

Jacob Elordi's career is going in a promising direction but he's far too young for this.
Aaron Taylor Johnson is at his worst in roles where he's asked to play a lead or a straight-man (and you can already tell his Kraven performance is gonna be extremely embarrassing in an already bad movie) so not only rules him out for this movie but also as a Bale type of figure, Jack O'Connell and Alden you can make an argument for but would never even be considered by Gunn, Austin Butler is a different type and so is George Mackay.

And yeah Fassbender didn't get his big break until 300 but like, that's why I'm looking into unknowns too. Leo Suter, Ludwig, Woodell and Tom Brittney aren't big names either but there's nothing in their performances or looks that'd make me think they're gonna break big in the same way he did. Even if you look at the TV show he was doing back then, you can tell from Fassy's presence he was bound to break big at some point:

I'd be really happy to find a 30 something actor that has the same type of presence that Fassy had in this one scene on a show that was barely being watched by anybody. But I haven't found one.

Well it's because you're being selective and ignoring the ones that do.

I think the fact they would never be considered by Gunn is more an argument against James Gunn's taste than it is against the talent of the performers.

Elordi as Batman has a lot of potential (too young for this, presumably) but he's interesting to me because he's a rare actor I'd be equally excited to see as either Superman or Batman. He reminds me a lot of Christopher Reeve and its such a shame he didn't want to audition for it because in my opinion he was the guy in his age range for the part.

Oliver would be great. He's also in the age range I think they'll actually go for on this even if my personal instinct says an actor in his 40s would be ideal.

Like which ones?

Ok, NONE? Dev Patel isn't? Jack O'Connell? Austin Butler? Kayuluua is a thousand times the actor Fassbender is.
