Discussion: UK Politics

Yeah, anything sounds classy in British-y talk, even when it's not. :)

If I needed anymore convincing that this Lammy is a buffoon I got it.

David Lammy has said comparing the hard-Brexit European Research Group of Tory MPs to Nazis and proponents of South African apartheid was “not strong enough”, and suggested that the Brexit debate had allowed proponents of hard right views to flourish.

The Labour MP, who is a vocal campaigner for a second EU referendum, was asked on the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show whether a comparison he previously made to the election of Adolf Hitler’s party in Germany and to South African white supremacists was appropriate.

“I would say that that wasn’t strong enough. In 1938 there were allies who hatched a plan for Hitler to annex part of Czechoslovakia, and Churchill said no, and he stood alone,” he said.

Asked if it was fair to make such a comment about elected politicians, he said: “I don’t care how elected they were: so was the far right in Germany.”

In regards to the recent mess with The Jeremy Kyle Show which was rightfully taken off air for essentially being a exploitative and supercilious misery porn about the poor. I think this interview with Terry Christian on Sky News is very revealing about how we still live in a society where ex public school figures dominate too much of the media and set the agenda. Props to his "I would've chinned him!" and him signing off with "all, brilliant" :D. A legend. But he makes a great point at the end. Why don't we have programmes that take a critical eye at bankers and the privately educated who are really running the country in the ground?..

@Mandon Knight I think you'd especially like this one mate.

Theresa May will make the case for her new Brexit plan in Parliament later, amid signs that Conservative opposition to her leadership is hardening.

The prime minister will outline changes to the Withdrawal Agreement Bill - including a promise to give MPs a vote on holding another referendum.

But shadow Brexit secretary Sir Keir Starmer said the offer was "too weak".

Some senior Tories will today ask party bosses for a rule change to allow a no-confidence vote in her leadership.

Environment Secretary Michael Gove defended the PM's plan, urging MPs to "take a little bit of time and step back" to "reflect" on the detail of the bill - due to be published later today.

MPs have rejected the withdrawal agreement negotiated with the EU three times, and attempts to find a formal compromise with Labour have failed.

May goes left, she gets screamed at.... she goes right, she gets screamed at.... she goes forward or back... screamed at.

Westminster has turned into a waste of space.

It's cool though, all these whinging Tories can simply call a vote of no confidence and get her out, I mean they're all about country over party right?

Oh yeah sorry I forgot they all backed her in January

it's been clear for a long while that there's not a majority for anything in Parliament... and there won't be.

the crazy woman Leadsom quit the cabinet tonight

Can't help but think no deal is nailed on now. What a time to be British

it's been nailed on for months...

the moment Westminster refused to choose an option out of 8 choices of Brexit actions, it was on for No Deal.

Another referendum actually makes the most sense since the average citizen didn't likely understand the full ramifications of leaving the EU when the first one was held. Like most political issues this one seems to have become more about pissing off the opposing side rather than implementing a constructive and beneficial plan.

One could make the argument that it's irresponsible to have a referendum as significant as this without providing the public with a full report that outlines the likely effects of both decisions, both negative and positive.

Problem is that we did.... we were told back before the first vote that everything leave was saying was a lie and that things would be seriously rough for us post leaving.... But people preferred to listen to the happy lies over the sombre truth.

a 2nd Ref is just going to cause more chaos.... and worse, give Farage a better platform

More chaos could be a payable price if there's a chance of achieving a resolution that doesn't result in leaving the EU, though? It does seem like a lose-lose situation right now, there probably isn't an easy answer.

Interested to see what the turnout is like for the EU elections today given the uncertainty of our future in Europe.

there were more people running the polling station i used than voting when i was there

Theresa May to resign as prime minister

Talk about putting Party before country. All those backstabbers wanted May out so badly, they are willing to let the country crash out of Europe without any form of deal just so they can have May out.

And now we face the possibility of having a blonde idiot in charge of the country just like another one across the pond...

Had to be done:funny:

Unfortunately things will probably be even more of circus now.

It'll just get worse.... the next person in the job is going to be stuck with the same bull**** that May had to deal with. With how Westminster is working to the personal gain of MPs, there's no chance of any deal being voted through

Yeah I know its just a case of pass the blame.

Hey silver linings at least we know there's no danger of the torries calling another general election this time lol.

So May is out but what next? I don’t know what is going to make things any better. We have a political deadlock. What we really need is a different Labour leader. Such a strange situation with a Eurosceptic in charge of the largest Remain party and primary opposition party. He is only going to do what a big part of his party wants if it’s a way to criticise the Tories.

I don’t know what she could have done that would have got voted through Parliament. The one huge mistake the Tories made during her rule was that absolutely idiotic manifesto. They were riding high in polls until that and never recovered.

I feel like the EU election turnout will be low.

Even before the referendum I don't think most people paid close attention to EU elections. Most people couldn't name their regions MEP.

It is funny that Boris Johnson is getting sued for his EU 350 million NHS bus lie. Politicians should be held to account for things they say.
