Musical Broadway musical hit 'Wicked' to the big screen

Had no idea this movie was a thing. I remember hearing advertisements on the radio for the stage musical of Wicked way back in the day, like forever ago (I guess around when this topic was made, actually...why the **** was this movie in production for so long?), and I was vaguely curious what that was all about but I'm not really a Broadway musical sort of guy.

But the trailer looks neat, I'mma definitely go see it.

In a year of surprising box office twists and turns such as Inside Out 2 becoming the highest grossing animated movie of all time and Joker 2 opening lower than Morbius, I'm willing to put my chips on the table for this one and say that Wicked is going to be the big smash hit this holiday season alongside Moana 2. Apart from the musical being very popular in general, this is also going to have the curiosity factor for people who aren't familiar with it.

A part of me feels like Gladiator will be a hit too. Don't know about smash hit though. We'll see.

I am not so sure if this will be a hit or not. Yeah, Wizard of Oz is a beloved classic, but basically every Oz movie thereafter has ranged from bomb to moderate success. That and it's a musical, which can either be a good or bad thing. Audiences are picky about the genre. I also think padding this into 2.5 hrs is a mistake. This is a 2 part project. I think best bet would have been keep this one about 2hrs and if it's a hit, maybe make Part 2 a longer movie.

I really can see this going either way

Oh Gladiator II will do just fine. It's really the only big blockbuster around for adults who aren't into musicals/family movies.

I think the musical's popularity could give it some momentum, it's definitely got more of a chance than that Sam Raimi Oz movie did over a decade ago. I do think that a lot of the audience will be pissed that it's only a Part One. I know that it was originally announced as that but people have short memories, especially when they've been avoiding that in all the marketing for this.

Part 2 was filmed already, right?

Yep, back to back. Where do you think the Dorothy glimpses are from?
Considering the track list and the length of the film, it's quite possible Dorothy is in Part 1 in some way. Because there is going to be a lot of "new" material. But alas, having the knowledge of about 80 mins of a musical, means knowing everything that will be in the 160m adaptation movie.
