Musical Broadway musical hit 'Wicked' to the big screen

I wanna know the rest of this story; do y’all recommend the book or just watch the play? Or both? Lol
You can probably find the whole show on YouTube.

The show is almost nothing like the book, though.

I want to watch the show, but I won't until after I see Part 2.

Can one hobble together an Oz trilogy with Wicked, The Wizard of Oz, and Return to Oz? 🤔

Drew Barrymore had Ariana Grande on the other day and surprised her with a wand used by Billie Burke as Glinda:

So I am actually really excited to check this out. I will probably wait for streaming personally. But I am a fan of musicals and the talent involved with this plus the visuals etc really are grabbing my attention. I have zero clue though about anything story wise. I’d be going in completely blind.

I keep imagining Elphaba slaughtering everyone in the Ozdust ballroom with her abilities Carrie-style after they tease her. She uses her power to break the ceiling and flood the room, eventually taking herself out in the process. Glinda prevented a true tragedy that night.

As I said I know nothing really about the story or anything and will be watching it blind basically. But can anyone here just give me a little bit of an idea about it? Only thing I’ve gathered is that it is not really canon to The Wizard Of Oz correct? It’s more of a fan fiction.

It's supposed to be a prequel to The Wizard of Oz, I think. I haven't seen it, either. The most I know about it is from that episode of South Park from 2011:

It's not canon to The Wizard of Oz, no. It was written by someone else who wanted to turn that story on its head. But the Wizard of Oz could be viewed as canon to Wicked in a "propaganda film version of events" kind of way.

That’s fair. I’m fine watching it as its own thing with no canon connection to the original film. Can you perhaps give me your brief general description of what Wicked is about overall?

Well, in the 1939 movie, Oz wasn't even real, it was all a dream. In the book, Oz is definitely a real place. Which is why Wicked is based much more on the book than the 1939 movie, although there are nods to the movie.

Well the book's subtitle is "The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West" and that's basically what it's about, and how she came to be known as that (some shady s***'s going down in Oz, to put it mildly). Central to that arc is her relationship to Glinda, who eventually comes to be known as the the Good Witch of the North. Act 1/Part 1 is primarily set during their time at Shiz University, and then Act 2/Part 2 jumps several years into the future and catches up to the events of The Wizard of Oz.

I"ve never read an interview with the author or anything, but the impression I got from the book is that he basically took one look at The Wizard of Oz and thought "this feels fake. This feels like propaganda and this world actually seems f***ed up." And then dreamt up what he imagined the "real" story might be.

Appreciate the replies everyone thanks  Will definitely check it out when it hits streaming. Would see it in the theater but my girl isn’t super eager to see it :whoops:

Then did the same with Cinderella, Snow White and A Christmas Carol which I’m sure are all getting optioned now lol

Jacob Marley was the true villain of A Christmas Carol all along. :o
