A Bronx teenager roasted her ex-roommate's kitten to death in a stove - then brushed off the incident as a joke when she was busted, authorities said Thursday.

"I hate cats," Cheyenne Cherry, 17, allegedly told investigators when asked about the heartless crime.

Cherry's confession came after she was arrested Wednesday by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

She and an unidentified juvenile allegedly broke into Valerie Hernandez's Tinton Ave. apartment on May 6 and trashed the place.

Then in a shocking act of animal abuse, they tossed the woman's kitten, Tiger Lily, into the stove and cranked up the temperature, ASPCA assistant director Joe Pentangelo said.

Cherry told authorities that she and her accomplice "thought we would play a joke on Valerie and mess up her apartment."

The duo bolted from the apartment with DVDs and packages of noodles, Pentangelo said.

"She didn't want to hear the cat crying and scratching at the oven door," Pentangelo said.

Firefighters found the female cat's remains smoldering in the oven after neighbors complained of smoke coming from Hernandez's apartment.

"My brother came to my house and said, 'I think food is burning,'" said Hernandez's next-door neighbor Jannetssie Genau, 24.

"Later the police came and said what it was. I was upset because I had a cat myself before."

Besides roasting the kitten, Cherry and her friend allegedly slashed Hernandez's furniture, unscrewed light bulbs and threw bleach on the walls, Pentangelo said.

"I think what was done cries out for justice," Pentangelo said. "It's a shame that this kitten had to suffer like this. For the kitten to get caught up in whatever was going on with them is a tragedy."

Pentangelo said the kitten was burned so badly a necropsy had to be performed to determine its sex.

Cherry was charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, burglary, arson, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief. She was released to the custody of her mother.

The unidentified juvenile involved in the incident has not been arrested.

Sick. Just sick.

Did this site become run by PETA or something? 3 animal cruelty threads in 2 days

Words cannot describe my anger. Hopefully the Justice system ***** slaps them hard in the face with the sentence.

 American Society for the Prevention of Creulty to Animals can arrest people? Didn't know that.

She is mentally ill and deserves a very strict punishment. Anyone that could do that to a harmless kitten can do that to a human being too. That's what I think anyway.

I live in the Bronx.

Cat slayings...are pretty low on the rung of issues we've got.

I think the cat killing is horrible, but she went into an apartment and trashed the place and stole things. So, isn't she being arrested for that?

Another cat killer? This article was absolutely disgusting. Poor thing. :csad:

What do you think, death penalty? Boil her to death?

That isn't necessarily true. I would easily kill a mouse, but not a cat. I would easily kill a spider, but not an endangered panda. I would also easily kill an opossum (with my car... by accident) and think nothing of it, but if I killed a person I'd probably stop to try and help.

Released to her mother? So I guess the fact she stole as well didn't mean anything.

But the difference is that she seemed to take some kind of twisted pleasure in killing this cat. Ask any psychologist. That is the mark of a sociopath. They start with killing animals.

Sometimes I swerve when a squirrel comes in front of my car. (The animal not the poster). Sometimes I think the damage I could sustain from hitting something and maybe I should just keep driving and hit it. (Again the animal not hte poster)

Those 2 do not match up. a Crimannaly insane person should not be punished, but rather given the care and treatment needed to be placed back into society.

I agree that many psychologists say that many serial killers tortured and killed animals and pets as children. Certianly she is twisted, mentally unstable, and could possibly grow up to be a murderer, but I don't think that just because she killed a cat she is necessarily a sociopath.

I dunno. But she has ****ed up her life. Killed a cat and caught stealing and defacing property. (Well...okay, it's a apartment, but guessing the land lord is pissed) Death penalty...no. After calming down...outside of a punch to the face, I think she is ****ed anyhow. You know she will have a hard time going to college being a cat killer AND we have to assume she will also get charged for stealing and the other ****. But I'm sure Burger King will take her still...

Probably true. I would think though that someone who seems to have little remorse is probably going to have a **** time anywhere.

Heck, I don't even know if work places or colleges...don't know how they would react knowing she killed a cat (kitten at that). Although stealing...and ruining a person's apartment...the only places that would even think about hiring you are fast food places. And that's cause they would hire almost anyone with two eyes and two hands and two legs. I wouldn't want no one cooking my food with only one eye... I be like ':o he has a depth perception there...gonna burn my food and **** up'. I couldn't resist.:yay:....ah, I'm a *******.

:lmao: This is even more hilarious because the new drive through guy at the local BK has a patch. We call him Cap'n Burger of the Royal Burger Navy.

Aha Darth, you had your mock thread closed before it could be funny

Second to last paragraph has the full list of charges;

"Cherry was charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, burglary, arson, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief. She was released to the custody of her mother."

So she's got more to answer for than just the cat killing, but the cat killing is probably what made the story news.

Wonder how many drops he's had so far.

It got closed. I thought he closed it, but then I saw he isn't a mod or admin.
