A lot of professional chef always go after burger meat as being the stuff that is used that aren't the best cuts of meat.

fair enough.

but the thing is that in a lot of non-westernised countries, people have always tried to make the most of the meat they are provided by an animal and leave very little to waist.

I myself have endulged in eating parts of animals that alot of you may consider 'not normal'

these consider

cow foot
chicken legs
stomach lining
kidneys etc

I know my aunt loves the head of a chicken :wow:

so when it comes to burger meat, why is it that western society feels that there should be large parts of an animal that are unfit for human consumption while there are actually plenty of places in this world that will happily feast on these parts.

has the west just become 'soft' when it comes to meat. Maybe this has to come the separation from the farms and the food making process from the purchasing off ready cut meat at a supermarket all wrapped up nicely, ready to buy.

The african part of me applauds the west for at least making the most with bits that people would feel uncomfortable eating and turning them into an edible product so less meat is wasted. The westernised side of me cringes when professional chefs make a big deal of the crap that goes into a burger, or if i watch a show and someone has to eat a fish's eye or something like that.

I have a difficult time deciding which part of me is being reasonable.

My mom likes Pigs Feet... YEEECCHH

Chicken feet when done right can be quite delicious. Same with pig's feet :D

Yes, criticize the US at every turn. We're too fat yet we're too finicky about the fat that we eat.

LOL paranoid much? He said WEST. That could be any country, UK, France, etc. Chill bill.

what about not eating meat at all?

We just have such a superiority complex in the western cultures that we seem to think we're "above" eating the meat scraps. At least, that's what we like to tell ourselves while we shovel McDonald's, bologna, and hot dogs down our throats :p

we once had some friends over for dinner, we had hamburgers, chili and calzone, everybody liked it and nobody noticed there wasn't any meat in their meals

It's not disgusting. It's weird and kinda shady that you'd lie to them, but other than that...

Meh i guess irony is lost on the Internet :D

I was dating a Bolivian about a year ago and had gone to some folks apartment where they serve a traditional Bolivian soup, illegally using their apartment as a makeshift restaurant. We were with his brother and his girlfriend, this was our hangover meal it was the day after Valentines Day. I didn't recognize anything in the bowl and was feeling like crap,I wanted a shower and to brush my teeth, having passed out at his brothers with no supplies was a bad idea. I looked across at Maria and her bowl and there was an eye starring back at me which was attached to half a skull of some animal. :wow: :( :csad:
I was a trooper I finished the veggies and called it a day. They were all like aren't you hungry, finish your soup.
Good Lord, then he took me to another illegal selling-food- out of- the- basement- of- your-house set up.

I guess we can afford to eat what meats we want in the western world OR any food for that matter. I ate some pretty tasty dog in mexico.:o

Meat is an essential part of my life. I'd die without it.

Eh...every culture has their 'taboo' foods. Honestly tho I do think it has to do with our wealth. When you can eat the 'good' parts and toss away the rest without starving, then you get spoiled. The first ppl to colonize here were lucky the Indians helped them out or they would have starved (Thanksgiving :) ), we've come a long way lol.

One of the better things I can think of dealing with this tho is a story my Uncle told me.

He heard this man speaking from Africa, he was speaking on the diets that certain children in Africa eat, with the overall message that the ppl hearing that should help donate money to help the children's lives improve. Problem was while he was discussing what they ate the crowd (Uncle desribed many in the crowd as looking more wealthy), would make moaning sounds, and from what my Uncle said it was a bit rude because his point was to help the children, not to get hung up on what they ate as much. Anyway suddenly the guy smiles, and says (paraphrasing, can't remember exacts of it ), "There is one tribe I've heard of that eats the grains of a certain plant, the embryo of a bird, and the fat off of an animal that is filthy." He said that the crowd was doing the usual moaning and *****ing sounds, then the speaker said "I believe you refer to it as toast, bacon and eggs". Anyway my Uncle got a kick out of it, and they all shut up.

Things that 'sound' gross to a culture typically turn us off because we can eat the 'better' foods. Like that group that gets together in NY to eat insects prepared in a variety of ways, I've heard it actually tastes alright, and if you had to you could live on insects, but try to get anyone here to eat Trantula or grub worms...won't happen. Thing is tho that most of us eat insects and don't realize it heh, like how a loaf of bread is supposed to have so many insect bits in it even if you can't see it because it's nearly impossible to get all the insects out of most wheat fields, then your grind up the wheat with them in it.

I like to make a meal out of the hearts, livers and kidneys of birds (chickens, turkeys, geese). Mix it with mushrooms and onions. It looks awful but I love the smell and taste.

nice post.

so do you personally think it's a good idea to make something edible from what the west would consider the remains instead of simply wasting it?
