And if people keep telling you that your art is ****, at what point do you pack it up and do something else?

It's seemingly reached that point with Zack Snyder and his critics. It's essentially, and not very subliminally, critics telling him this with these reviews.

They have made up their minds, there is no point of return for Snyder. Just look at those reviews. Scathing.

And maybe he hasn't done much to help changed people's minds.

So it's going to attract a small section of the DC audience, won't appeal to kids, and has a bunch of inside references the GA won't get. I'm sure this is exactly what WB wanted.

it is what it is snyder makes super hero films for comic book fans not general audiences it has been that way since watchmen he does dark, grim and gritty he makes controversial choices and doesn't do humor

i love both MOS and Watchmen so i know BVS is geared towards me lol so i hope i enjoy it

Aside from that owl movie all his films are just dour. That tone doesn't fit with EVERY story. It's like he thinks he's the fanboy's Werner Herzog

But it's lunacy to gear these films to a small, specific group of people. You're not going to make anything close to Avengers money if the target audience is us DC fans.

The bad thing is this film's reception can easily ruin the expectations for any film in the DCU that follows it.

Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman could be cinematic masterpiece adaptions and good movies and if the word of mouth for this one isn't good (on top of the so so word of mouth for Man of Steel) you're going to have trouble selling the whole brand.

Because the expectation of the DCEU will be equated with the stink of what came before them.

This isn't true.

They had fun characters. It was a different, more sophisticated kind of humour - but you had all of these elements bringing some brevity - Lucius Fox, Alfred, Joker, Selina, etc.

This sounds like barely any of the characters crack a smile.

My point is that it is that there is no "conspiracy" amongst the critics. Their job is to rate balanced, quality films. This is a fact: there have been critically acclaimed DCU films (i.e the aforementioned TDK trilogy--which was successful before Avengers and after the MCU debuted). In contrast, these films by Snyder have a pattern--and it's one that isn't resonating well with critics or many fans. It's about the director--not critics preferring Marvel vs. DC or "light" vs "dark/gritty".

The reviews I've read describe the movie as joyless, riddled with obnoxious music and boring. I don't want any film to be like that--whether it's Marvel or DCU.

Why should Critics Force him to change his style ? He is the director not them.
He doesn't have to change himself. But if BvS doesn't do what they need it to do at the box office, he might be out of a job.

I don't think Snyder WANTS to do anything to change people's minds. There's an air of arrogance about him, in my opinion. It drives me nuts. He thinks he's too smart for the regular moviegoers/general population; that if people don't like it, then it's because of THEM and not the "art."

In my opinion, an artist makes attempts to grow and evolve. Snyder has not done that in the slightest.

Just a month ago, WB was already in "damage control" mode with BvS, claiming that if the movie fails in the box office, it will be because "It's too smart for the general audience and for people who like Marvel movies."

I think critics and audiences have a reason to say "That's enough, Zack Snyder."

There is a conspiracy

@Saicam_Films @josegarcia_n7 since the avengers Disney paid out critics and made the world only cheer for marvel movies

Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman will have a dark tone, not exactly like Snyder's but still, darker than other successful comic book movies.

If BvS under-performs financially, I expect WB changing their movie lineup a bit after SS and WW, they might add Flash with a lighter tone before JL -1 (which will also have a lighter tone)

If the X-Men franchise proves anything, it shows that you can overcome bad movies and gain some good will and confidence back from fans. Of course, that takes time and a lot of effort. Apocalypse is still doing the damage done by X3 and it's been a decade!

But if SS/WW do well, then they can rework the DCCU to take the good from this film and combine with what works. Obviously, you're going to have to find directors, writers, actors and executives who will support that however. But it can be done. It's just really hard. I do hope SS and WW do succeed because I really like everything I've seen from those two films. I think if SS does well then we're going to see another solo Batman film real quick with some of the actors from SS.

Listening to critics is not his job and it should not be any director's job.

Said director then shouldn't be surprised then if the response is as it has been before. Believing you know better and doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result next time is foolish and arrogant. He's spending hundreds of million of WB dollars, they sure as hell want him to do a good job.

Like Kubrick?

The X-Men franchise faltered only because of X3's change of director. Critics hated Brett Ratner's X3. But they've adored everything else from the Bryan Singer and Matthew Vaughn's series. And that proves my point. There's no "critics conspiracy". If you put out a s*** film, they won't be kind to it--whether it's Marvel or DC.

Snyder can make all the Sucker Punches he wants. Make five a year. If he wants to be some sort of fanboy auteur he's MORE than welcome to. But when you're adapting someone else's story on this scale to be appealing to a wider audience that comes with certain expectations. He doesn't seem to handle that well. He seems to think he's better than the material he's working with
