Knock-off toothpaste recalled in four states

Jun 15, 2007 04:30 AM
Five-ounce tubes of toothpaste sold in discount stores in four U.S. states and labelled Colgate – described as counterfeit by Colgate – are being recalled because they may contain a poisonous chemical, according to the tubes' importer.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration confirmed Wednesday that testing had found the chemical in a product with the Colgate label. But the agency's unsure if it's really Colgate or a counterfeit.

"We are aware that toothpaste is something that's been counterfeited in the past," said a FDA official. "We don't want to alarm people unnecessarily."

MS USA Trading, Inc. of North Bergen, N.J., said the toothpaste – imported from South Africa and sold in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Maryland – may contain diethylene glycol, a chemical found in antifreeze. The same chemical forced the recent recall of several brands of toothpaste imported from China.

Lead fears spur Thomas the Tank Engine recall

Associated press, Canadian press

WASHINGTON–A massive toy recall could have millions of parents taking their children's favourite toys away.

On Wednesday, RC2 Corp. recalled about 1.5 million Thomas the Tank Engine wooden railway toys in Canada and the United States, due to concerns that the paint used on them may contain lead.

Thomas the Tank Engine is a wildly popular toy among young children, especially boys.

The toy recall includes wooden vehicles, buildings and other train set parts imported and distributed by RC2 Corp.

The toys in question were sold from January 2005 through June 2007.

Toys marked with the letters WJ or AZ are not included in the recall.

Patty Davis with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says lead can be toxic if ingested by children.
