A school cafeteria worker in Pocatello, Idaho is fighting to get her job back after she was fired for giving a hungry student a free lunch.

Dalene Bowden says the 12-year-old girl at Irving Middle School told her she didn't have any money and was hungry.

Bowden's supervisor saw what happened and reported her. Bowden was fired for theft, even though she reportedly volunteered to pay for the meal with her own money.

"My heart hurts. I truly loved my job, and I can't say that I wouldn't do it again," Bowden said.

She has hired an attorney, to try and get her job back. An online petition for her has more than 33,000 supporters, and continues to grow.

Yes, you read that right. The *****ebag HR Director fired an employee for feeding a hungry student a $1.70 meal that the now ex-lunch lady was going to pay out of her own pocket. WTF is wrong with people today?

'Murica. Land of the strong. If you fall behind don't expect a hand up. :argh:

Zero tolerance has spread to the cafeteria.

This is why someone would hesitate to do something good, comes back and hits them right in the ass.

"Money money money.
Money talks, kindness walks.
Out with your charity on my time.
Even though you paid me for it.
I just want to blame you."

ahh but you give one hungry kid a freebie and then they expect it, then they tell their friends and then they show up with "no money" and it keeps growing and then all the kids are demanding free food. if we let this happen how can we expect the schools and companies to keep afloat

wonders how many will miss the sarcasm

There are two sides to every story.

If a mcdonalds employee gave out a free burger to a bum, they'd be fired too.. Especially if they were previously reprimanded for doing the same thing.

Exactly. What do those hungry kids expect? A free lunch? They should grow up now and learn that there is no such thing as a free lunch.

The kid didn't have enough money so the cafeteria lady felt sorry for her and gave her food. What two sides is there? :funny:

We had those when I was growing up. If your parents were below a set income level, you got a free lunch. I'm surprised they still don't have those programs since, for some of those kids, that's the only good meal they'll get.

It's a waste of tax dollar, obviously. :o

They still exist I'm sure but are so convoluted in their requirements they probably are hard to actually aquire.

They still have this system....but you have to be signed up for it.

There have been several instances, here in Kentucky recently, where kids had their food taken away from them after it was found out that a food worker gave them it even though they ha no money to pay for it. After the media reported them, the "officials" who took the food away were reprimanded and a new procedure implemented to handle these situations.

If things go there as they have gone here, the worker will most likely get their job back, and new rules made to keep this from happening (in that school) again.

Honestly, if you fire someone for giving a hungry kid a 2 dollar lunch this time a year, you really are tempting three spirits to come visit you in the night.

I think there's situations where a blind eye can and should be turned, and letting a hungry schoolkid get a free lunch is one of them, especially when the lunchlady was offering to pay the $1.70 the supervisor was so worried about out of her own pocket.

There is such a thing as being anal about rules to the point of having no moral judgment or compassion. Like Inspector Javert in Les Mis.

The supervisor who fired her is probablyreceiving some vicious hate mail right about now.
