Nicolas Cage is set to star in Knowing, a thriller to be directed by Alex Proyas (I, Robot), reports Variety. Summit Entertainment will fully finance and distribute the film, which begins production March 17 in Melbourne.

Cage will play a teacher who examines the contents of a time capsule unearthed at his son's elementary school. Startling predictions in the time capsule that have already come true lead him to believe the world is going to end at the close of the week and that he and his son are somehow involved in the destruction.

Escape Artists partners Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch will produce. Aaron Kaplan and Sean Perrone are co-producers, and Norm Golightly and David Bloomfield are executive producers.

Escape Artists originated the project with novelist Ryne Pearson, who pitched it and wrote the first draft. Knowing has been rewritten by Stiles White and Juliet Snowden; Proyas and Stuart Hazeldine did the most recent draft

Rose Byrne has landed the lead role opposite Nicolas Cage in the sci-fi thriller Knowing for Summit Entertainment and Escape Artists, says Variety.

Byrne will play the daughter of a woman who buried a 1962 time capsule bearing the dates of the assassinations of historical figures, the hotel fire death of the wife of a professor (Cage) and an imminent world apocalypse. After the professor discovers its contents and alerts her, the initially skeptical Byrne begins remembering strange incidents from her childhood.

Alex Proyas (I, Robot) will direct the screenplay by Ryne Douglas Pearson, with script revisions by Juliet Snowden, Stiles White, Stuart Hazeldine and Proyas.

Escape's Jason Blumenthal, Todd Black and Steve Tisch will produce with Topher Dow. Norm Golightly and David Bloomfield are executive producers.

Production is set to begin March 25 in Melbourne, Australia.

Plot Details for Proyas' Knowing

Alex Proyas (I, Robot) directs Knowing, starring Nicolas Cage and Rose Byrne:

In 1958, as part of the dedication ceremony for a new elementary school, a group of students is asked to draw pictures to be stored in a time capsule. But one of the students, a mysterious girl who seems to hear whispered voices, fills her sheet of paper with rows of apparently random numbers instead.

Fast forward 50 years to the present: A new generation of students examines the contents of the time capsule and the girl's cryptic message ends up in the hands of young Caleb Myles. But it is Caleb's father, professor Ted Myles (Nicolas Cage), who makes the startling discovery that the encoded message predicts with pinpoint accuracy the dates, death tolls and coordinates of every major disaster of the past 50 years. As Ted further unravels the document's secrets, he realizes it foretells three additional events—the last of which hints at destruction on a global scale and seems to somehow involve Ted and his son.

When Ted's attempts to alert the authorities fall on deaf ears, he takes it upon himself to try to prevent more destruction from taking place.

This gripping supernatural thriller charts one man's faltering steps towards belief in the ultimate order of the universe even as he finds himself surrounded by mounting chaos. With the reluctant help of Diana Whelan (Rose Byrne) and Abby, the daughter and granddaughter of the now-deceased author of the cryptic prophecies, Ted's increasingly desperate efforts take him on a heart-pounding race against time until he finds himself facing the ultimate disaster—and the ultimate sacrifice.

A release date has not yet been set for the film.

Exclusive Knowing Set Photos

Scooper 'Jason' has sent ComingSoon.net this exclusive report from the set of director Alex Proyas' (I, Robot) new sci-fi thriller, Knowing, starring Nicolas Cage and Rose Byrne. Photos of the Geelong, Australia set follow his report! You can read the full synopsis for the film here.

I was watching a scene from Nicolas Cage's new movie "Knowing" being filmed in Geelong. You will see in the photos a traffic jam, which is created by the lead character in the rain wearing a hooded top. The police seem to be trying to talk to him to see what's wrong (as I guess he knows what's about to happen) with onlookers from the cars standing around. Then all the onlookers and police scramble out of the way and the lead character stays and turns to look at the sky behind him and then ducks a few seconds later. He stands up and looks to where a jet has crashed and starts running to the scene. He runs down past the jet engine while it's still running going past a person running from the scene to the tail section where you can hear a woman calling for help and with explosions going off around them.

I love Proyas work and i am hoping to see Cage find some form after his recent projects, this looks ok, a mystery with a Sci fi twist and i like the feel, but the full trailer is gonna need to add some wow factor.

This one sounds pretty cool too two. I'll give it a shot. The films I've liked of Cages are Gone in 60's, National Treasures 1 &2. So hopefully this one is as good as those.

Just checked the trailer. Looks better than I expected, actually.

This sounds like it could be interesting but seriously, Nicolas Cage should just admit he's bald already. These wigs of his are beginning to get very, VERY distracting...

dude, without the sideburns, his hair looks even more awful.

Yeah, I kinda trust Proyas (notice the kinda)
