California *may* become two states.

But then every song about California will be deemed nonsensical! Weezer will be made out to look like babbling lunatics!

Not to mention the Red Hot Chili Pepper's career will be shot to hell.

:lmao: :lmao:

Like that is likely to happen. Before these counties get to gung-ho--which I doubt--they need to brush up on Article IV of the Constitution, which this would be in violation of.

Arnold would've had twice as much trouble referring to the state. :woot:

Not. All a new state needs to have happen is the permission of Congress and of the current state's legislature. Ask West Virginia if you don't think that's possible. Secession to form independence or join another country is illegal under the 1867 supreme court ruling.

West Virginia separated because of a little thing called the Civil War. In case you haven't noticed, the circumstances of part of the state fighting to prevent the other part from seceding are not in play here.

And in any case the Constitution requires that 2/3 of Congress to approve of this. 2/3 of a US Congress that can't agree on how to doing mundane parts of its job (see debt ceiling), much less the vast majority agreeing to carve California in half. Also, I don't think it'd pass or even be considered in the California state legislature to begin with.

In short this is a non-starter that holds no credibility.

Americans won't stand for this. 50 is a much more agreeable number than 51, and 51 stars would mean having to redo the flag that America has been used to for more than half a century!

If this happens, we should just keep our current flags and draw a line down the middle of one of the stars. This nonsense isn't worth changing the design or buying new flags over. :o

The secession crisis is irrelevant in what I was discussing. I was merely present the fact that secession from a preexistence state is possible, however nearly impossible to get Congress to find time or interest in approving such a thing. The Civil War is an example of a rushed admonition I debunked the facts of your previous statement that the Fourth Article of the U.S. Constitution prohibits state secession at all.

LOL at that map. What the **** would we do here in Los Angeles County?

Touché, I suppose. I should have elaborated and said it requires a 2/3 majority from Congress which is nearly impossible in this day and age--not to mention the California state legislature. It still is more than unlikely thusly, in my opinion.

Just merge the Dakotas to go back to an even 50.

Yeah, pretty much :o

Yeah, and Texas will become a sovereign country next week.

I wish....

Besides look at the state's border who would want to live in a place where LA county is not in. Where would the new capital be in the Mojave Desert?

C'mon, California songs are actually pretty cool. Even New York doesn't have that many good songs like Eagles' Hotel California and RHCP's Californication & Dani California which mentioned the state in its title.

As for splitting California into two states...yeah right. Maybe if Texas does it first.

Meh... won't happen. These sensational stories are drummed up to get hits or reader interest. (Like the story I saw this morning on Yahoo quoting the scientist saying that people born in the next twenty years will live to be a thousand because we can cure aging now)

I dont mind all Cali songs. You're right, some are pretty darn good. But the sheer number of songs and bands that go on and on about how its the perfect place with perfect people makes me want to puke.
